(Strong and Interesting Opening)

Two years ago, as a final year student I felt so excited to continued my study master aboard and with
scholarship right after graduation. I am a big fan of city, especially its transportation network. Then
at that time, I was sure that Master of Urban Design would be my next stop. I did some research on
my interest, asked for advise from some of my colleges and seniors about my plan. Most of them
advised me to do some working experience before continue my study. My Internship-Mentor told
me the reason why its better do some work experience first before continuing study master.

He said to me that working experience would enrich me with some skill that I havent experienced in
college, and it would give me more time to convince my self about my current interest. I should try
some different project to reveal where I’m really enjoy at, what I’m really interested with.

I took his advise, and I have been working for 2 years now. I’ve been working on some different
projects; architectural designing, landscape designing, master planning, even policy making. And yes,
I learn a lot of skill, such as good presentation drawing, effective research skill, also confidence in
formal communicating. And also now I found out that I’m even more interested in Urban Design
than before. It happened when I was working on a Master Plan for a CBD Area and I also wrote the
guidline for it. I found that urban designer can give a contribution to make a better city, a more
livable city. And finally when I was helping on some Transit Oriented Development projects, I have
no more doubt about my interest in Urban Transportation Network. I thought that its the time, I
have to persue my dream. And I refuse to give up.

Then I started to dig a lot information about Urban Design Master Program also the scholarship
aboard. Why aboard? Beside of studying theory, Well-Develop Country might be a perfect precedent
of Transportation Network. I can learn not only at school but also from the environment. I found
some great school to learn Urban Design such as UC Barkeley (with its Fullbright), UCL London
(Chevening), and The University of Melbourne (AAS).

When I found out about this information in February, the application for Fullbright had been closed.
Then the closest Scholarship application is AAS. And at the end of the year I will also try on
Chevening.

Bad experience sometimes can lead people to think deeper for atempting the bad experience
happens again. It will make people more creative and grow curiosity. As happens to me, I
experienced the same bad thing almost every day, and it give me a deep thinking and make me
really excited to take a role on solving it.

Since I was a little girl, my family have lived at the suburban area. Even thought we spent most of
our time in our neighborhood, but sometimes, such as weekend, we also traveled to the city center.
It takes a long way to reach the city center. As a little girl seeing the changes from a low dense rural
area to high dense urban with its crowdedness are fascinating. When in the sub-urban all you can
see is small building and rice field, the city give me utopian world by its highrise building, mall, park,
even the elevated road. The transition from rural to urban really excite me. I really love traveling to
the city.

While Infrastructure define the city shape, Urban Design give it soul and put a character on to it.

When I was a little girl, I used to love traveling from my family house at sub-urban area to the city

Pertumbuhan populasi perkotaan dan sekiytarnya tidak didorong oleh turut berkembangannya
infrastruktur. Kebanyakan kota di Indonesia masih mengutamakan kendaraan pribadi sebagai sarana
perpindahan yang utama.

alat transportasi, sementara perkembangan infrastruktur tidak dapat mengakomodasi
pertambahan kebutuhan

1. Pengalaman masa kecil jalanan dari sub-urban ke kota lancar dan sepi
2. Semakin dewasa mobility dr sub-urban ke kota tidak semudah dulu

Big City is always intersting. It attact people with its shopisticated facilities, fancy public area, and
the most importent is a lot of job opportunities. It is always be a strong magnet for people to come
and make a living there. As people come to the city, Housing and city infrastructure is forced to be
develop to satisfy the demand. But as we all know, that space is limited. The city area cannot provide
as much as its demand. Then it urge the development of the sub-urban area.
