Why think about STUDYING ABROAD?

Study abroad can be an enriching and eye-opening adventure, where learning extends to
the world beyond the classroom walls. There is no substitute for living and studying in a
foreign country if you want to gain in-depth knowledge of another culture's customs,
people, and language. In addition, you will find that living and studying or working in
another country can develop important transnational competencies that can be of
interest to future employers.

Personal Growth
Students who return from a study abroad program often see it as an experience which
matured them personally and intellectually. They praise being exposed to new ways of
thinking and living, which encourages growth and independence. For many students,
going abroad to study is the first time they have really been away from 'home,' from
familiar surroundings as well as from friends and family. This is seldom an easy
experience, but it is universally praised as worthwhile, often even life-transforming.
After immersing themselves in a new culture, mastering the challenges of learning in a
new and different academic environment, and experiencing the many highs and lows of
being a 'foreigner,' students typically return home with increased self-confidence and
justifiable pride in what they have achieved.

How to Communicate Effectively During a Job Interview

Now that you’ve reached the point in your life where you want to consider finding a
job, it is important that you learn how to effectively communicate when being
interviewed. This is when your potential employers will get their first impression of the
type of person that you are and whether you’ll be a beneficial addition to their team or
not.

Tip 1: Be Yourself

As cliché as it sounds, being yourself is one of the best things that you can do when
being interviewed. You will want to accentuate all of your best characteristics and the
different elements that will help your potential employers to see that you are the right fit
for the job. It is important to note that you don’t have to get too personal with the things
that you tell them as going into too much personal detail can take away from
professionalism.

Tip 2: Look Professional

There are dozens of ways that you can look professional, from making sure that your
hair is cut nicely to ensuring that your clothes are freshly pressed. When you walk into
the room for the interview you will want to leave a lasting positive impression on the
interviewers.

1)Buenos días/tardes. En primer lugar me gustaría darle la bienvenida a Granada. Sé que ud.
está aquí por motivos de trabajo, pero espero que también haya podido visitar la ciudad.
2) Good morning/afternoon. I’m very pleased to meet you. Thank you for your warm welcome.
Yes, I have indeed managed to visit the city and it is certainly very beautiful. In many ways
it is similar to my city, Chester: a small city with so much history. Have you been to
Chester?
3) No, lamentablemente no he tenido ese placer, pero espero visitarla pronto. Seguro que con
este reportaje, voy a tener más ganas aún. Bueno, vamos a empezar. En primer lugar me
gustaría que me diera algunos datos generales sobre la ciudad, la situación geográfica, el
número de habitantes, etc.
4) Yes, of course. Chester is located in the North West of England, on the banks of the River
Dee very close to the border with Wales. It is quite a small city, with a population of 80,000
but with a lot of activity. We have a university and the economy is based on tourism and
commerce.
5) Tengo entendido que es una ciudad con mucha historia. ¿Cuáles son los principales
atractivos turísticos de la ciudad?
6) There are many places of historic interest in Chester. The best-known are the Roman walls,
the Roman amphitheatre, and all the other Roman ruins in the city. In addition to that,
there are buildings from other periods of history, for example many Tudor-style medieval
buildings. The Cathedral is also well worth a visit.

8) Visitors come to Chester all year round, but I must say it is better in the spring and summer,
when the weather is at its best. You can go rowing on the river or visit the Chester Races.
There is a tradition of horse racing in Chester which dates back to the 16th century and
there are many important horse races which take place at Chester race course.
9) Veo que Chester tiene mucho que ofrecer al turista. Muchas gracias por toda esta

Contexto: Coordinadora del Máster de Derecho Internacional de Granada quiere


organizar intercambio de profesores con el Master’s Program in Global History
and International Relations de la Universidad de Rotterdam. Primera reunión
por Skype.

P.: Buenas tardes Sra Martin y gracias por aceptar reunirse conmigo. El Máster de
Derecho Internacional de Granada está muy interesado en poner en marcha un
intercambio docente con su Máster, así que queríamos explorar las condiciones para
hacerlo, si ustedes están de acuerdo, claro.
R.: Good evening, and thank you very much for approaching us to negotiate an
exchange agreement. The Law Faculty of Granada is a very prestigious institution,
so we are very interested in cooperating with you.
P.: Estupendo, pues le explico nuestro interés: Después de estudiar a fondo su programa
académico, vemos que ustedes tienen más contenidos en Historia Mundial, que es
algo que nosotros apenas incluimos en el programa, mientras que nosotros
dedicamos mucho a Organismos Internacionales. En este sentido, pensamos que
podríamos hacer un intercambio de docentes en ambas materias.
R.: Yes, that sounds really interesting. Indeed, our programme only deals with
international organizations in an introductory way. Therefore, yes… our students
would benefit very much if we could offer them more contents in the area of
international institutions.
P.: Muy bien, pues si le parece podríamos concretar los detalles. Los contenidos de
Historia Mundial parecen más apropiados para el principio del programa, por lo que
sería interesante que los profesores de Rotterdam impartieran sus clases aquí en el 1º
semestre.
R.: Yes, that makes sense. And International Organizations is a subject that can be dealt
with at a later stage, so I think your teachers could come to Rotterdam during the
second semester. As for the number of teaching hours, I think 3 ECTS would be
enough for us, distributed over a period of 3 weeks. What do you think?
P.: Uy, eso es mucho para nuestros profesores. Tendría que ser más bien 1 ECTS y
concentrado en una semana.
R.: But 1 ECTS is only about 6 to 10 hours, which is definitely too little for us. Why
don’t you let me check with my staff and I will get back to you and continue
discussing this? Would that be all right?
P. Sí, claro, ningún problema. Volvemos a hablar lo antes posible ¿de acuerdo? Gracias
y hasta pronto.
