Emma Hopkin, MD Bloomsbury Publishing

Emma Hopkin started her publishing career in marketing at Routledge, with


a quick stint in sales and marketing at Houghton Mifflin in a UK based
office. She moved to Pan Macmillan in 1996 as marketing manager working
on the Pan list. In 1998 she moved across the business into children’s
sales, then to sales director, sales and marketing director and Managing
Director of Macmillan Children’s Books. After 15 years at Pan Macmillan,
she moved to Bloomsbury in 2011 to run their children’s business globally
and was promoted in 2016 to MD of Consumer Publishing taking on
responsibility for the adult trade business as well.

Steve Bohme, Research Director, Nielsen Book Research UK

Steve previously worked at Bowker Market Research (previously BML) from


1994-2013, becoming Research Manager in 1996 and Research Director in
2001. Steve has managed the Books and Consumers survey since 1997,
as well as a wide variety of other qualitative and quantitative research
projects relating to the book market, and to reading and buying habits.
Steve is a Member of the Market Research Society (MRS).

Jaclyn Swope, Publisher Account Manager, Nielsen Book Research

Jaclyn Swope joined Nielsen BookScan as an intern in 2013 while


completing her Master’s degree in Publishing at Kingston University. She
now works as a Publisher Account Manager on the Book Research team,
where she assists a variety of publishers with understanding and utilising
both retail sales and consumer data, through training sessions,
presentations and bespoke analysis of book industry trends.

10:35 - 11:00 Building empathy in children through books


This session will explore the importance of empathy to child development,
and the exciting scientific research showing how books build our real-life
ability to empathise.

Miranda McKearney OBE


Miranda is the founder of EmpathyLab, an organisation that incubates an
empathy, literature and social action programme for 4-11 year olds. In
2002, she had founded The Reading Agency, a national charity. The
charity’s Summer Reading Challenge now involves 800,000 children every
year.

Amy is the English Co-ordinator at Beck Primary, a large primary


school in a challenging area of Sheffield and part of the Cascade
Multi Academy Trust.

Ed Ripley, Walker Books


Since 2013, Ed Ripley has been at Walker Books as UK Sales &
Marketing Director and Group Export Sales Director. Before that Ed
was at Pan Macmillan, in their Adult Division and then as Sales
Director of Macmillan Children's Books.

supporting a multi-disciplinary team.

Vanessa Lewis, The Book Nook

Vanessa Lewis is co-owner of The Book Nook in Hove, a multi award


winning Independent Children’s Bookshop. Vanessa is also Vice Chair
for the BA Children’s Bookselling Group and a member of the Children’s
Laureate Steering Group. As an ex-teacher, Vanessa provides
customers and schools with essential specialist children’s book
knowledge. The Book Nook offers many events and opportunities for the
local community to engage with books and Vanessa, alongside the rest
of The Book Nook team, is passionate about nurturing a love of reading.
They are constantly on the lookout for exciting new books to inspire
children of all ages.

Clair Goodyear - Heffers Bookshop


Clair Goodhead is about to start her 30th Bookselling year. Clair has
worked in most areas of the trade from Academic to Trade and General
Bookselling. For the last 4-5 years Clair has been responsible for what is
the fabulous Children's Bookshop within Heffers in Cambridge.

BookTrust is the UK’s largest reading charity. We work to get children
reading, because reading has the power to transform lives. During this
session we will share findings from our recent UK-wide audience
segmentation research which delves into the lives of families with
children aged 0-16, exploring their lifestyles, motivations and beliefs
about reading . We will highlight two of the most culturally diverse
segments and explore how BookTrust and the wider sector could
engage them more deeply with the pleasure of reading.

Jill Colman, Director of Children's Books, BookTrust

Jill manages BookTrust's expert selection and recommendation of


great books, book purchasing for all of the charity’s gifting
programmes, and the work with arts organisations, publishers, authors
and illustrators to promote excellence in children's books. Jill has held
a number of senior roles in publishing, including board director of
Bloomsbury Publishing, managing director of A&C Black and
managing director of Little Tiger Press.

Amina Ali, Senior Research Officer, BookTrust

Amina is part of the team that delivers BookTrust’s research and


evaluation programme, and leads on the charity’s audience
segmentation work which provides an in-depth view of how distinct
types of families engage with reading for pleasure. Prior to joining
BookTrust Amina spent several years in consultancy in the market
and social research sector using a variety of methodologies to help
charities, local authorities, and government bodies to understand their
stakeholders and improve and communicate their impact.
