T
alk to anyone who labors over a vegetable garden,
and you would think the entire enterprise was a waste
of time. My mother, who gardens in southern Vermont,
says her substantial patch is a salad bar for grazing
deer. One friend tells of a squash that twined around his upstate
New York plot, taking out every plant in its path. And another
describes harvesting his crop of green beans, only to discover
that each one bore a set of tiny tooth marks.
A shaded yard and poor soil thwart my own gardening, but I often enjoy
the fruits of my mother’s labors. Despite the deer, she successfully grows
tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce, herbs and zucchini, and tends a couple of
finicky raspberry bushes. The garden is a testament to perseverance, but I think
it goes beyond that: A small shrine to my late
father, himself a gardener, stands in a quiet

corner. Her garden is where hope and memory
flourish alongside a bumper crop of rhubarb.
So why do we garden? To quote another
gardening friend, “Gardens feed you and heal
you, and make you attend to the now.” That,
and the fact that homegrown fruits and
vegetables taste really, really good. Check out
the delicious recipes on page 60, all showcasing
fresh seasonal produce.

Trifexis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime)
kills fleas and prevents flea infestations,
prevents heartworm disease, and treats
and controls hookworm, roundworm and
whipworm infections. Trifexis is also the #1
prescribed canine combination parasiticide.1
Now powerful, effective parasite protection
for your dog is just one and done – once a
month, every month.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of
ivermectin with spinosad alone, one of the components of Trifexis chewable tablets. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the
last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for
existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use
with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, lethargy, itching, loss of appetite,
and diarrhea. To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. If vomiting occurs within an hour of
administration, redose with another full dose. Puppies less than 14 weeks of age may experience a higher rate of vomiting. For product label,
including complete safety information, see next page.
