T
alk to anyone who labors over a vegetable garden,
and you would think the entire enterprise was a waste
of time. My mother, who gardens in southern Vermont,
says her substantial patch is a salad bar for grazing
deer. One friend tells of a squash that twined around his upstate
New York plot, taking out every plant in its path. And another
describes harvesting his crop of green beans, only to discover
that each one bore a set of tiny tooth marks.
A shaded yard and poor soil thwart my own gardening, but I often enjoy
the fruits of my mother’s labors. Despite the deer, she successfully grows
tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce, herbs and zucchini, and tends a couple of
finicky raspberry bushes. The garden is a testament to perseverance, but I think
it goes beyond that: A small shrine to my late
father, himself a gardener, stands in a quiet

corner. Her garden is where hope and memory
flourish alongside a bumper crop of rhubarb.
So why do we garden? To quote another
gardening friend, “Gardens feed you and heal
you, and make you attend to the now.” That,
and the fact that homegrown fruits and
vegetables taste really, really good. Check out
the delicious recipes on page 60, all showcasing
fresh seasonal produce.
Working the soil even plays a role in preventing
heart disease, as we reported in our June issue.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of
ivermectin with spinosad alone, one of the components of Trifexis chewable tablets. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the
last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for
existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use
with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, lethargy, itching, loss of appetite,
and diarrhea. To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. If vomiting occurs within an hour of
administration, redose with another full dose. Puppies less than 14 weeks of age may experience a higher rate of vomiting. For product label,

decided to quit coloring cold turkey.

“Going gray is not a license to give up
on your hair,” says colorist Kyle White
of the Oscar Blandi Salon. To lessen
the contrast between Jacqueline’s roots
and the rest of her hair, White added gray
lowlights and white highlights. A new
shoulder-length cut, with longer layers,
also revived her wiry strands.
Styling triCk: The pigment in hair
serves as a protective layer, so when
hair grays it becomes more susceptible
to damage. To ensure that nutrients and
oils aren’t stripped away as you wash,
swap in a shampoo made for aging hair.

Protect your skin.
Protect your beauty.
Protect your life.
IT’S THAT WORTH IT.
Growing up in Texas, I didn’t give sun
safety much thought. Given my Latina

assumed I wasn’t at risk.

Today I know that sun exposure doesn’t

discriminate against skin color and can
cause dryness, brown spots, wrinkles,
and worst of all, melanoma— the deadliest

common cancers among women under 40.
So applying sunscreen throughout the day
is my daily ritual. And it should be yours, too.
