Assessing usability of Battery

Laboratory Activity No. 3

Topic: Battery

Course Outcome: Use appropriate measuring instrument to determine the electrical parameters

Learning Outcome:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Explain the principles, characteristic properties, and type of batteries

2. Use actual measuring instrument to assess the usability of battery and its condition.

Competence: Maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.

Function: Electrical, electronics, and control engineering at operational level.

Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency:

A-III/1.F2.C2.KUP4. Construction and operation of electrical testing and measuring instrument.

Exercise Task:

In groups, perform the procedures stated in this exercise. Each groups must have a designated
moderator to facilitate exercise.

Each groups should have at most:

NSA Class: 5 members

Regular Class: 5 members

In this exercise, the groups should be able to use digital multitester to verify the ratings of the battery as
to the actual measured parameters. In addition, the group should be able to write an observation drawn
from the exercises, or as required.

The group should be able to accomplish the task within 60 minutes.

Materials and Equipment:

Item no. Quantity Description

1 1 set Battery ( 12 V)
2 1 unit Analog Multi-tester
3 1 unit Digital Multi-tester (*1:5)

*Equipment to student ratio

Procedure:

1. Use both analog and digital multimeter to verify the voltages of the batteries provided. Set the
meters to DC voltage range at or above the battery voltage.

2. Record the value in the table.

Rating Analog Digital Assessment

1.5 V AA
1.5 AAA
12 V Lead Acid

3. Reset the digital multimeter to perform leak test. Set the DC voltage range at or above the battery
voltage as appropriate to the given battery ratings.

4. Connect the negative meter lead to the negative battery post.

5. Use the positive meter lead to probe the housing of the battery.

6. Measure the leaking voltage across the two battery terminals using the multimeter.

Vleak = _________________ V (positive terminal)

Vleak = _________________ V (negative terminal)

7. Connect the 12 V battery in series. Measure the voltage output.

8. Connect the 12 V battery in parallel. Measure the voltage output.

Configuration Analog Reading Digital Reading

Series-connected
Parallel-connected

Observation:

1. Refer to step 2. When the measured voltage across the battery does not meet the ratings, what
does the measured values suggest?

2. Refer to step 3 to 6. What is the meaningfulness of a zero reading in this steps?

3. Refer to 7 -8. Is the voltage measure on both configurations are correct? Does it confirm the
principles about the voltage in series and parallel connected cell?
