Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

The researchers comprehend that STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics is a strand that pokes on the field of math and sciences. This strand

not only gives background about engineering and mathematics, but also tackles

medical courses and backgrounds. Taking the STEM strand helps to open a way for

students to take medical courses.

Rivera (2017) stated that Medicine is a STEM career and one must have

enough understanding on biology, biochemistry and other aspects of the strand STEM

to be a doctor. Williams (2013) also added that Medicine should be included in the

strand STEM because it involves a lot of Science and also Math is use to give the

right amount of medication to treat illnesses properly.

This research focuses on applying oneself on the experiences and

enlightenments of professional doctors that will and shall eventually help the pursuing

medical students. The researchers aim to foster the background knowledges of

upcoming medical course takers relating to their selected specialization by

interviewing licensed doctors and understanding their everyday work. Developing

such relationship and interacting with the experts will expose further details and

explanations on different misconceptions that can be recognized on their profession.

Theoretical/ Conceptual Framework

This study will use the Rational choice theory by Steven L. Green (2002). In

rational choice theory behavior follows from the pursuit of objectives, so preference

specification is crucial. Frank (1997, p. 18) stated, there are two general approaches.

The self-interest standard of rationality “rational people consider only costs and

benefits that accrue directly to themselves.” The present-aim standard of rationality”

“rational people act efficiently in whatever objectives they hold at the moment of

choice.” Frank contends that neither approach is obviously satisfactory. Many people

seem to care about their own material well-being, so the selfish egoism implied by

self-interest standard is probably too narrow. In contrast, the present-aim has no

restriction at all on preference formation, which means that anything can be explained

by an appeal to preferences.

Rational Choice Theory is based on the idea, definition, or explanation that all

action is fundamentally rational in character, and people calculate the risk and

benefits of any action before making decision. (Green & Fox, 2007). In this study it

will help you to understand how Doctors have gone before making a decision. On

how they will take risk and what would be the benefits on every decision they make.

Sometimes they pursue being a doctor because they consider only costs and benefits

accrue directly to themselves but sometimes they act as the moment of choice.

Operational Framework

The operational framework will be affix on specialties and subspecialties of

most doctors that have expertise in one type of medicine to another. This research will

examine the behaviours, causes and informations on professional doctors. This will

explain how medical diagnostic knowledge can be structured for distinctive problem

solving.

Medical identification is placed into class task that allows doctors to make predictions

about attributes of clinical situations and to determine suitable course of action. The

main characteristics of the research concept are pre-stored knowledge; values

acceptable or not acceptable for each illness ascribe, and backtrack values. The

application of the theory comprehends networks of adapted to goals of clinical tasks.

The researchers describe how the research are used in ill practices, how the research

concept fits within the clinical is sensible, how it contrasts with competing theories of

clinical actions, how educators can help students build and refine research, and how

theories can be used to assess clinical competence.

Statement of the Problem

The study will focus on the experiences of professional doctors and the

background knowledges related to their specialization.

To solve the main problem, the researchers aim at answering two core questions:

1. What have the participants experienced being a doctor of a specific field?

2. How have the participants experienced being a professional doctor of a specific

field of expertise?

Assumptions of the Study

The researchers based this study in the following assumptions:

1. Professional doctors decided their specialization due to several factors.

2. Professional doctors encountered different experiences.

3. Participants have experienced being a professional doctors through work.

Scope and Delimitation

This probe will mainly dwell on understanding and describing the lived

experiences of doctors of different specializations. The researchers will only interview

those who are qualified for the study; at least five doctors that works in Laguna will

be taken as respondents. The interview will depend on the doctor’s preference, at his

own time and place; therefore the study will only allow a small amount of time for

interviews.

This study however, will not be able to cover the details and importance of

each doctor’s specialization. The researchers will not tackle the monthly incomes,

expenses, and/ or privileges of the said doctors. This study will only be useful for

students pursuing the medical field, specifically, aiming to be professional doctors.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to enlighten students who will pursue a profession in the field

of medicine. The researchers will give knowledge to those students who are in doubt

or undecided if their chosen medical course is right for them with the facts and

experiences given by licensed doctors in different specialization.

This study could be immensely beneficial to upcoming college students who

will get the benefit more for they will be able to get perceptions as this study helps

them what field they are belong.

The findings will also give parents idea on the field their child will take for

they are the first adviser to their children.

The result of this study may also help future researchers, as they will also get

a first-hand insight on the information they will be collected. It will be an additional

knowledge for them since they are also students.

Definition of Terms

The following terms to be used in this study are defined conceptually and

operationally:

Appraisal is the act of judging the value, condition, or importance of something. This

study shows how to determine the professional image of a doctor

Conjecture is an opinion or idea that is formed without proof or sufficient evidence.

Doctors are the ones who gives medical treatment. The researchers will conduct an

interview on chosen licensed doctors.

Dominated is to have control of or power over.

Empathy is the ability to share someone else's feeling.

Entity is something that exists by itself. This is the study about a separate legal

structure established by doctors in private practice (Hudson, 2018 )

Experience is the observation of or participation in events resulting in or tending

toward knowledge. The study will show what is the experience of being a doctor for

a day and help to pursue some medical students.

Expertise is the skill of an expert. It was uses in our study by one type of medicine to

another.

Information is the communication or reception of knowledge or intelligence. This

gives idea of what the doctors do in their daily lives.

Medical is the practice of medicine or the treatment of disease. This can be the

challenges or difficulties that the doctors will faced.

Notion is an individual's conception or impression of something known, experienced,

or imagined.

Profession is a calling and requiring specialized knowledge and often long academic

preparation. This study will focus on different specialized doctors

Psychological is the mental of behavioral characteristics of an individual or group. In

this study the Doctors complaint for the benefit of the patient.
