IN EVERY AGE there is a NEW DEVELOPMENT of truth, a message of God to the

people of that generation. The old truths are all essential; new truth is not
independent of the old, but an unfolding of it. It is only as the old truths are
understood that we can comprehend the new. When Christ desired to open to His
disciples the truth of His resurrection, He began “at Moses and all the prophets” and
“expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Luke 24:27.
But it is the light which shines in the fresh unfolding of truth that glorifies the old.
He who rejects or neglects the new does not really possess the old. For him it
loses its vital power and becomes but a lifeless form. COL 127.4
There are those who profess to believe and to teach the truths of the Old Testament,
while they reject the New. But in refusing to receive the teachings of Christ, they
show that they do not believe that which patriarchs and prophets have spoken.
“Had ye believed Moses,” Christ said, “ye would have believed Me; for he wrote of Me.”
John 5:46. Hence there is no real power in their teaching of even the Old Testament.

AGE, noun [French age; Armoric oage; deduced by Lunier from Latin oetas, or
oevum. But these are undoubtedly contracted words, Gothic aiw; Dutch eeuw;
Greek; from the Celtic, Welsh haug, fullness, completeness, an age, a space of
time; plu. hogion; the g being sunk in the Latin words; in the Sanscrit, yuga.]

1. The whole duration of a being, whether animal, vegetable, or other kind; as, the
usual age of man is seventy years; the age of a horse may be twenty or thirty
years; the age of a tree may be four hundred years.

2. That part of the duration of a being, which is between its beginning and any
given time; as, what is the present age of a man, or of the earth?

Jesus began to be about thirty years of age. Luke 3.

7. The time of life for conceiving children, or perhaps the usual time of such
an event.

Sarah was delivered of a son when she was past age. Hebrews 11.

8. A particular period of time, as distinguished from others; as, the golden age,
the age of iron, the age of heroes or of chivalry.

There are periods which are turning points in the history of nations and of the
church. In the providence of God, when these different crises arrive, the light for that
time is given. If it is received, there is spiritual progress; if it is rejected, spiritual
declension and shipwreck follow. BEcho August 26, 1895, par. 11

The truth that had been given to patriarchs and prophets Christ rescued from the
rubbish, and presented to the people in a way that made it seem like new truth.

Miller’s Rule #14

The most important rule of all is, that you must have faith. It must be a faith that
requires a sacrifice, and, if tried, would give up the dearest object on earth, the
world and all its desires, character, living, occupation, friends, home, comforts
and worldly honors. If any of these should hinder our believing any part of Gods word,
it would show our faith to be vain. Nor can we ever believe so long as one of these
motives lies lurking in our hearts. We must believe that God will never forfeit His
word. And we can have confidence that He that takes notice of the sparrow, and
numbers the hairs of our head, will guard the translation of His own word, and throw a
barrier around it, and prevent those who sincerely trust in God, and put implicit
confidence in His word, from erring far from the truth, though they may not understand
Hebrew or Greek.

Psalm 12:6-7 KJV

[6] The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified
seven times.
[7] Thou shalt keep them, O Lord , thou shalt preserve them from this generation
for ever.

The Time of the End

Daniel 12:4, 9, 13 KJV

[4] But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the
end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
[9] And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the
time of the end.
[13] But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the
end of the days.

But since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the
prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the
judgment near. GC 356.2

Daniel 11:35-40 KJV

[35] And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to
make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
[36] And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify
himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods,
and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall
be done.
[37] Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard
any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

2
[38] But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers
knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant
things.
[39] Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall
acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and
shall divide the land for gain.
[40] And AT the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the
king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with
horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall
overflow and pass over.

The apostle Paul warned the church not to look for the coming of Christ in his day. “That
day shall not come,” he says, “except there come a falling away first, and that man of
sin be revealed.” 2 Thessalonians 2:3. Not till after the great apostasy, and the long
period of the reign of the “man of sin,” can we look for the advent of our Lord. The
“man of sin,” which is also styled “the mystery of iniquity,” “the son of perdition,” and
“that wicked,” represents the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its
supremacy for 1260 years. This period ended in 1798. The coming of Christ could not
take place before that time. Paul covers with his caution the whole of the Christian
dispensation down to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the message of
Christ's second coming is to be proclaimed. GC 356.1

Time of the End X2

How can we but see how closely the universe of heaven is connected with this fallen
world! These communications given to Daniel should fill our souls with awe, with
humility, with meekness, and lay our pride low in the dust.... CTr 334.3
A wonderful connection is here seen between the universe of heaven and this
world. The things revealed to Daniel were afterward complemented by the
revelation made to John on the isle of Patmos. These two books should be carefully
perused. Twice Daniel inquired, How long shall it be to the end of time? “And I
heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these
things? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the
time of the end. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall
do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand....
But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of
the days.” CTr 334.4

Daniel 8:13-17 KJV

[13] Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint
which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice , and the
transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under
foot?
[14] And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall
the sanctuary be cleansed.

3
[15] And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for
the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
[16] And I heard a man's voice between the banks of ULAI, which called, and said,
Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
[17] So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my
face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for AT the time of the end shall
be the vision.

Shortly after the fulfilment of some of the signs that the Saviour foretold would be seen
before his second coming, there took place throughout the Christian world a great
religious awakening. Students of prophecy came to the conclusion that the time
of the end was at hand. In the book of Daniel they read: “Unto two thousand and three
hundred days, then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” Thinking that the earth was the
sanctuary, they understood that the cleansing foretold in Daniel 8:14 represented the
purification of the earth by fire at the second coming of Christ. Searching the Scriptures
for further light, and comparing this prophetic period with the records of historians, they
learned that the twenty-three hundred days extended to the year 1844. SW January 24,
1905, par. 3

Daniel 12:5-9 KJV

[5] Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the
bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.
[6] And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river,
How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?
[7] And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when
he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for
ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have
accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
[8] And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of
these things ?
[9] And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the
time of the end.

The Same Injunction

The books of Daniel and the Revelation are one. 7BC 971.5

Revelation 10:1-6 KJV

[1] And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a
rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars
of fire:
[2] And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the
sea, and his left foot on the earth,
[3] And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven
thunders uttered their voices.

4
[4] And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I
heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven
thunders uttered, and WRITE THEM NOT.
[5] And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand
to heaven,
[6] And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things
that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the
things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

The books of Daniel and the Revelation are one. One is a prophecy, the other a
revelation; one a book sealed, the other a book opened. John heard the mysteries
which the thunders uttered, but he was commanded not to write them. 7BC 971.5
The special light given to John which was expressed in the seven thunders was a
delineation of events which would transpire under the first and second angels’
messages. It was not best for the people to know these things, for their faith must
necessarily be tested. In the order of God most wonderful and advanced truths would
be proclaimed. The first and second angels’ messages were to be proclaimed, but
no further light was to be revealed before these messages had done their specific
work. This is represented by the angel standing with one foot on the sea,
proclaiming with a most solemn oath that time should be no longer. 7BC 971.6

After these seven thunders uttered their voices, the injunction comes to John as to
Daniel in regard to the little book: “Seal up those things which the seven
thunders uttered.” These relate to future events which will be disclosed in their order.
Daniel shall stand in his lot at the end of the days. John sees the little book unsealed.
Then Daniel's prophecies have their proper place in the first, second, and third angels’
messages to be given to the world. The unsealing of the little book was the message
in relation to TIME. 7BC 971.4

Time of the End a Fulfillment of Prophecy

Moses

Genesis 50:24 KJV

[24] And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring
you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

When he saw that his end was near, he summoned his kinsmen about him. Honored as
he had been in the land of the Pharaohs, Egypt was to him but the place of his exile; his
last act was to signify that his lot was cast with Israel. His last words were, “God will
surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which He sware to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” And he took a solemn oath of the children of Israel
that they would carry up his bones with them to the land of Canaan. “So Joseph died,
being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin
in Egypt.” And through the centuries of toil which followed, the coffin, a reminder of the
dying words of Joseph, testified to Israel that they were only sojourners in Egypt, and

5
bade them keep their hopes fixed upon the Land of Promise, for the time of
deliverance would surely come. PP 240.2

The elders of Israel endeavored to sustain the sinking faith of their brethren by
repeating the promises made to their fathers, and the prophetic words of Joseph
before his death, foretelling their deliverance from Egypt. PP 259.3

Christ

Isaiah 7:14 KJV

[14] Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Galatians 4:1-5 KJV

[1] Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant,
though he be lord of all;
[2] But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
[3] Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the
world:
[4] But when the FULNESS OF THE TIME was come, God sent forth his Son, made
of a woman, made under the law,
[5] To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son.” Providence had
directed the movements of nations, and the tide of human impulse and influence, until
the world was ripe for the coming of the Deliverer. The nations were united under
one government. One language was widely spoken, and was everywhere
recognized as the language of literature. From all lands the Jews of the dispersion
gathered to Jerusalem to the annual feasts. As these returned to the places of their
sojourn, they could spread throughout the world the tidings of the Messiah's coming. DA

Daniel 11:40 KJV

[40] And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king

over.

KON = Papacy
KOS = Atheistic France

This period, as stated in preceding chapters, began with the supremacy of the papacy,
A.D. 538, and terminated in 1798. At that time the pope was made captive by the

6
French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was
fulfilled, “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.” GC 439.2

Revelation 13:10-11 KJV

[10] He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the
sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
[11] And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns
like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

What nation of the New World was in 1798 rising into power, giving promise of
strength and greatness, and attracting the attention of the world? The application of the
symbol admits of no question. One nation, and only one, meets the specifications of this
prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America. Again and again
the thought, almost the exact words, of the sacred writer has been unconsciously
employed by the orator and the historian in describing the rise and growth of this nation.
The beast was seen “coming up out of the earth;” and, according to the translators, the
word here rendered “coming up” literally signifies “to grow or spring up as a
plant.” GC 440.2

The gradual development of the plant from the seed is an object lesson in child
training. There is “first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.” He who
gave this parable created the tiny seed, gave it its vital properties, and ordained the
laws that govern its growth. And the truths which the parable teaches were made a
living reality in His own life. In both His physical and His spiritual nature He followed the
divine order of growth illustrated by the plant, as He wishes all youth to do. Although
He was the Majesty of heaven, the King of glory, He became a babe in Bethlehem,
and for a time represented the helpless infant in its mother's care. In childhood He did
the works of an obedient child. He spoke and acted with the wisdom of a child and
not of a man, honoring His parents and carrying out their wishes in helpful ways,
according to the ability of a child. But at each stage of His development He was perfect,
with the simple, natural grace of a sinless life. The sacred record says of His childhood,
“The child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God
was upon Him.” And of His youth it is recorded, “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature,
and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:40, 52. {COL 82.3}

CO'LON, noun [Greek, the colon, a member or limb.]

2. In grammar, a point or character formed thus [:], used to mark a pause, greater than
that of a semicolon, but less than that of a period; or rather it is used when the sense of
the division of a period is complete, so as to admit a full point; but something is added
by way of illustration, or the description is continued by an additional remark, without a
necessary dependence on the foregoing members of the sentence. Thus,

A brute arrives at a point of perfection he can never pass: in a few years he has all the
endowments he is capable of. Spect. No. iii.

AND, conj. [Saxon and; German und; Dutch ende or en; and.]

And is a conjunction, connective or conjoining word. It signifies that a word or part of

a sentence is to be added to what precedes. Thus, give me an apple and an orange;
that is, give me an apple, add or give in addition to that, an orange. John and Peter and
James rode to New-York, that is, John rode to New-York; add or further, Peter rode to
New-York; add James rode to New-York.

Millers Rule #13

To know whether we have the true historical event for the fulfillment of a prophecy: If
you find every word of the prophecy (after the figures are understood) is literally fulfilled,
then you may know that your history is the true event. But if one word lacks a fulfillment,
then you must look for another event, or wait its future development. For God takes care
that history and prophecy doth agree, so that the true, believing children of God may
never be ashamed. Psalms 21:5; Isaiah 14:17-19; 1 Peter 2:6; Revelation 17:17; Acts

Ecclesiastes 1:9 KJV

is that which SHALL BE DONE: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 3:15 KJV

Revelation 1:3 KJV

[3] Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep
those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

The Three Angels’ Messages—The proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’
messages has been located by the word of Inspiration. Not a peg or pin is to be
removed. No human authority has any more right to change the location of these
messages than to substitute the New Testament for the Old. The Old Testament is the
gospel in figures and symbols. The New Testament is the substance. One is as
essential as the other. The Old Testament presents lessons from the lips of Christ, and
these lessons have not lost their force in any particular. The first and second messages
were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the proclamation of the third; but
all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as essential now as ever
before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth. By pen and
voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of the
prophecies that bring us to the third angel's message. There cannot be a third without
the first and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in
discourses, showing in the line of prophetic history the things that have been, and the
things that will be.—Manuscript 32, 1896. CW 26.2

In history and prophecy the Word of God portrays the long continued conflict between
truth and error. That conflict is yet in progress. Those things which have been will be
repeated. Old controversies will be revived, and new theories will be continually arising.
But God's people, who in their belief and fulfillment of prophecy have acted a part
in the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages, know where
they stand. They have an experience that is more precious than fine gold. They are to
stand firm as a rock, holding the beginning of their confidence steadfast unto the end.
1MR 47.3
A transforming power attended the proclamation of the first and second angels’
messages, as it attends the message of the third angel. Lasting convictions were
made upon human minds. The power of the Holy Spirit was manifested. There was
diligent study of the Scriptures, point by point. Almost entire nights were devoted to
earnest searching of the Word. We searched for the truth as for hidden treasures. The
Lord revealed Himself to us. Light was shed on the prophecies, and we knew that we
received divine instruction.—Manuscript 32, 1896, 1-7. (“Testimony concerning the
Views of Prophecy Held by Brother John Bell,” December 6, 1896.) 1MR 47.4

9
Many who heard the first and second angels’ messages thought they would live to see
Christ coming in the clouds of heaven. Had all who claimed to believe the truth acted
their part as wise virgins, the message would ere this have been proclaimed to every
nation, kindred, tongue, and people. But five were wise and five were foolish. The truth
should have been proclaimed by the ten virgins, but only five had made the provision
essential to join that company who walked in the light that had come to them. The third
angel's message was needed. This proclamation was to be made. Many who went forth
to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and second angels, refused the
third angel's message, the last testing message to be given to the world. 16MR 269.3
A similar work will be accomplished when that other angel, represented in Revelation
18, gives his message. The first, second, and third angels’ messages will need to be
repeated. The call will be given to the church, “Come out of her, My people, that ye be
not partakers of her sins.” “Babylon, the great, is fallen, is fallen, and is become the
habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and
hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and
the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the
earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.... Come out of her, My
people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: for
her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her
iniquities” [Revelation 18:2-5]. 16MR 270.1

It is a fearful thing for any soul to place himself on Satan's side of the question; for as
soon as he does this, a change passes over him, as it is said of the king of Babylon,
that his visage changed toward the three faithful Hebrews. Past history will be repeated.
Men will reject the Holy Spirit's working, and open the door of the mind to Satanic
attributes that separate them from God. They will turn against the very messengers
through whom God sends the messages of warning. Even now I fear that the very
things I am seeking to make plain will be misapplied, misinterpreted, and falsified; some
have felt it a virtue to educate themselves in this line, and by their misapplication they
make of no effect the messages God sends. SpTEd 212.1
