Communism:

Karl Marx

From The Communist Manifesto, 1848

1- The expropriation of landed property and the use of rent from land to cover state
expenditure;
2- A high and progressively graded income-tax;
3- A abolition of the right of inheritance;
4- The confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels;
5- The centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by the establishment of a state bank
with state capital and an exclusive monopoly;
6- The centralization of transport in the hands of the state;
7- An increase in the state ownership of factories and instruments of production, and the
redistribution of agricultural land on a general plan;
8- Universal obligation to work and creation of labor armies especially for agriculture;
9- The unification of agricultural with industrial labor, and the gradual abolition of the
differences between town and country;
10- The public education of all children. Abolition of factory labor for children in its present
form. Unification of education with economic production.

** Communism is NOT about more government, at least historically.


Communism is about equality. The main principle of communism is that vast
quantities of inherited wealth shouldn't determine who gets all the economic and
political power. There is something inherently unfair in the fact that being born
into the right family can mean a lifetime of luxury and property owning, and
being born into the wrong family can mean a lifetime of factory labor in hellish
conditions.
** As a political movement, communism sought to overthrow capitalism through
a workers’ revolution and establish a system in which property is owned by the
community as a whole rather than by individuals.

** In theory, communism would create a classless society of abundance and


freedom, in which all people enjoy equal social and economic status
In practice, communist regimes have taken the form of coercive, authoritarian
governments..
Problems of communism;
 Lack of individuality
 Lack of choice
 Equal treatment for all, even if you work harder than all the rest

Socialism

1- Egalitarianism or equality. Humankind will be unified and cooperative, once


wealth is owned and used for the common good.
2- Moralizm. Division of rich & poor is evil; capitalism is fundamentally unjust.
Instead, the ideal future emphasizes peace, social justice and true liberty for
all.

According to Merriam-Webster, Socialism is…

3- Government ownership and administration of the means of production and


distribution of goods
4- A system of society or group living ,in which there is not private property
5- A system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned
and controlled by the state
6- Socialism did not take shape as a political creed until the early nineteenth
century. It developed as a reaction against the emergence of industrial
capitalism.
7- Socialism first articulated the interests of artisans and craftsmen threatened by
the spread of factory production, but it was soon being linked to the growing
industrial working class.
8- Its goal was to abolish a capitalist economy based on market exchange, and
replace it with a qualitatively different socialist society, usually to be
constructed on the principle of common ownership.
9- The most influential representative of this brand of socialism was Karl Marx,
whose ideas provided the foundations for twentieth-century communism.
10- Community: the core of socialism is the vision of human beings as social
creatures linked by the existence of a common humanity. It highlights the
degree to which individual identity is fashioned by social interaction and
membership of social groups and collective bodies
11- Fraternity: as human beings share a common humanity, they are bound
together by a sense of fraternity. This encourages socialists to prefer
cooperation to competition, and to favor collectivism over individualism.
Cooperation enables people to harness their collective energies and

strengthens the bonds of community, while competition pits individuals against
each other, breeding resentment, conflict and hostility
12- Social equality: equality is the central value of socialism. Socialism
sometimes portrayed as a form of egalitarianism, the belief in the primacy of
equality over other values. Socialists emphasize the importance of social
equality, an equality of outcome as opposed to equality of opportunity.
13- Need: sympathy for equality also reflects the socialist belief that material
benefits should be distributed on the basis of merit or work. The classic
formulation of this principle is found in Marx’s communist principle of
distribution: ‘from each according to his ability, to each according to his need’.
This reflects the belief that the satisfaction of basic needs is prerequisite for a
worthwhile human existence and participation in social life.
14- Social class: socialism has often been associated with a form of class
politics. First, socialists have tended to analyze society in terms of distribution
of income and wealth, and they have thus seen class as a significant social
cleavage. Second, socialism has traditionally been associated with the interests
of an oppressed and exploited working class, and it has traditionally regarded
the working class as an agent of social change, even social revolution.
15- Common ownership: the relationship between socialism and common
ownership has been deeply controversial. Some see it as the end of socialism
itself, and others see it instead as simply a means of generating broader
equality. It is a means of harnessing material resources to the common good,
with private property being seen to promote selfishness, acquisitiveness and
social division.

Conservatism

□ Conservative ideas and doctrines first emerged in the late eighteenth century
and early nineteenth century.
 They arose as a reaction against the growing pace of economic and political
change, which was in many ways symbolized by the French Revolution.
 Tradition: the central theme of conservative thought, ‘the desire to
conserve’, is closely linked to the perceived virtues of tradition, respect for
established customs, and institutions that have endured through time.
Tradition reflects the accumulated wisdom of the past, and institutions and
practices that have been ‘tested by time’, and it should be preserved for the
benefit of the living and generations to come.
 Pragmatism: conservatives have traditionally emphasized the limitations of
human rationally, which arise from the infinite complexity of the world in
which we live.
 Human imperfection: the conservative view of human nature is broadly
pessimistic. Human beings are limited, dependent, and security seeking
creatures, drawn to the familiar and the tried and tested, and needing to
live in stable and orderly communities
 Hierarchy: gradations of social position and status are natural and inevitable
in an organic society. These reflect the differing roles and responsibilities of
employers and workers, teachers and pupils, and parents and children.
Hierarchy and inequality do not give rise to conflict, because society is
bound together by mutual obligations and reciprocal duties.
 Authority: conservatives hold that, to some degree, authority is always
exercised ‘from above’, providing leadership, guidance and support for
those who lack the knowledge, experience or education to act wisely in
their own interests.
 Property: conservatives see property ownership as being vital because it
gives people security and a measure of independence from government,
and it encourages them to respect the law and the property of others.

Liberalism

□ Liberalism is the ideology of the industrialized West.

□ Individualism: is the core principle of liberal ideology. It reflects a belief in the


supreme importance of the human individual as opposed to any social group or
collective body. Human beings are seen, first and foremost, as individuals.

□ Freedom: individual freedom or liberty is the core value of liberalism. It is given


priority over equality, justice or authority. This ensures that each person is able
to act as he or she pleases or chooses. Nevertheless, liberals advocate
‘freedom under the law’, as they recognize that one person’s liberty may be a
threat to the liberty of others

□ Reason: Liberals believe that the world has a rational structure, and that this
can be uncovered through the exercise of human reason and by critical
enquiry. This inclines them to place their faith in the ability of individuals to
make wise judgments on their own behalf, being, in most cases, the best
judges of their own interests.

□ Equality: individuals are ‘born equal’, at least in terms of moral worth. This is
reflected in a liberal commitment to equal rights and entitlements, notably in
the form of legal equality (equality before the law) and political equality (one
person, one vote; one vote, one value).

□ Toleration: liberals believe that toleration is both a guarantee of individual's


liberty and a means of social enrichment. They believe that pluralism, in the
form of moral, cultural and political diversity, is positively healthy.

□ Consent: authority and social relationships should always be based on consent


or willing agreement. Government must be based on the consent of the
governed. This is a doctrine that encourages liberals to favor representation
and democracy.

□ Constitutionalism: liberals see government as a vital guarantee of order and stability


in society, they are constantly aware of the danger that government may become a
tyranny against the individual. They believe in limited government.

Fascism

► An ideology opposed to liberalism, socialism, conservatism, and communism,


because they brought economic depression, political betrayal, national
weakness, and moral decline.

► Italian dictator Benito Mussolini coined the term in 1919, referring to the
Roman symbol for “power through unity” – a bundle of reeds called “fasces,”
individually weak but collectively strong.

► Fascist ideology is totalitarian, which means a political system that controls


every aspect of life, so that there is no private sphere or independent
organizations.

► Fascism extols aggressive nationalism and dominion of the totalistic state over
the individual.

► Fascist Principles:

 Anti-egalitarian (equality)
 Anti-pacifist
 Anti-internationalist
 Anti-conservative
 Anti-intellectual

Anarchism

 No God, No Masters, No authority, Let us be poor together


 Anarchism is a doctrine that aims at the liberation of peoples from political
domination and economic exploitation by the encouragement of direct or
non-governmental action.
 So anarchism believes in no government, as all governmental institutions
are corrupt and undesirable.
 Anarchy is the goal of anarchists: the society variously described to be
without government or without authority; a condition of statelessness, of
‘complete’ freedom and equality based either on rational self-interest, co-
operation or reciprocity.
 The basic principles of all anarchism we believe can be summed up in two
statements:
- That all shall be free and equal.
- That we shall extend mutual aid and solidarity where we can

based upon perfect equality.

Capitalism

 An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are
controlled by private owners for profit.

 Capitalism is said to promote economic growth and the overall standard of


living.

 In other words, capitalism creates CAPITAL (money) …and lots of it.

 There is very little government intervention

 Producers (businesses) are motivated by profit (money) and therefore create


whatever goods people will buy.

 In other words, the businesses run the economy; the government stays out of
it!

 Problem of capitalism: There is a growing gap between the rich and the poor.
The rich get richer and the people who work for them remain poor.

 “Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights,


including property rights, in which all property is privately owned.
 Capitalism is a social system based on the principle of individual rights.
 Politically, it is the system of laissez-faire (freedom).
 Legally it is a system of objective laws (rule of law as opposed to rule of man).
 Economically, when such freedom is applied to the sphere of production its
result is the free-market.
 Under capitalism the state is separated from economics (production and trade),
just like the state is separated from religion.

Third way

 The term ‘third way’ is imprecise and subject to a variety of interpretations.


 Different third-way projects have also developed in different countries,
including those associated with the New Democrats and Bill Clinton in the
USA, and New Labor and Tony Blair in the UK, as well as those that have
emerged in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and New
Zealand.
 Certain characteristic third-way themes can be identified:
- The belief that socialism, at least in the form of ‘top-down’ state
intervention, is dead. With this goes a general acceptance of
globalization and the belief that capitalism has mutated into a
‘knowledge-economy’, which places a premium on information
technology, individual skills and both labor and business flexibility.
- Government is recognized as having a vital economic and social role.
The role is a more focused one, concentrating on the promotion of
international competitiveness by building up education and skills and
the strengthening of communities and civil society to contain the
pressure generated by market capitalism.
- The third feature is that it embraces liberal ideas of equality of
opportunity. Third-way politicians typically endorse welfare reform.
- This has led to support for what has been called a ‘workfare state’, in
which government support in terms of benefits or education is
conditional on individuals seeking work and becoming self-reliant
