In the Philippines, there are different cultures that
are present. Tuguegarao City is the center of the region 2.
Thus, the place is composed of many different types of
culture, language and beliefs. Therefore, nurses in the
locality are expected to provide culturally competent care
to patients coming to h=them for care. Thus, the study
aimed to assess the cultural competence of nurses from
different hospitals in Tuguegarao City. The cross-sectional
descriptive method was used considering 167 registered
nurses as participants. The Cultural Competence Assessment
tool (Doorenbos, Schim, Benkert & Borse, 2003) was used to
gather the data. Frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and
ANOVA were utilized for data analysis. Results show that
the participants report themselves as competent (4.3) when
working with people from cultures different as their own.
Also, the participants are competent (5.10) in terms of the
cultural awareness and sensitivity and also competent
(4.53) in terms of cultural competence behavior. Further,
results show that there is a significant difference in
their self-reported cultural competence when grouped
according to age and type of school graduated. There is
significant difference in their cultural awareness and
sensitivity when grouped according to type of school
graduated. There is a significant difference in the
participant’s cultural competence behavior subscale in
terms of the number of years in the service and religion.
Thus, self-reported cultural competence is affected by age
and school graduated from while cultural awareness and
sensitivity is affected by the school graduated and their
cultural competence behavior is affected by numbers of
years in service and religion.
