Lagrime d’amante al sepolcro d’amata

La sextine «Larmes d’amoureux sur le tombeau de l’aimée» a été écrite en mémoire de la jeune cantatrice Caterina Martinelli
(Rome, 1590 – Mantoue, 1608). Venue à la cour de Mantoue à 13 ans, elle y avait été l’élève de Monteverdi. Elle mourut de la petite
vérole à 18 ans alors qu’elle se préparait à interpréter l'opéra l’Ariana. Le berger Glaucus pourrait représenter le duc Vincent Gonzague,
qui fit installer la pierre tombale de la défunte dans l’église del Carmine à Mantoue.
