INTRODUCTION
1.0 Overview
This chapter comprises a general introduction to the study. It gives the background, problem
statement, objectives, and the justification of the study.
1.1 Background
During an industrial training that I underwent in the study year 2017/2018 at Kampala
Pharmaceutical Industries (1996) limited located at Plot No.M444B, Stretcher Road, Ntinda in
Kampala district of Uganda, I managed to learn and acquire a couple of skills from their different
departments that is Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Stores and Production department.
As a student currently pursuing a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering, my major focus was inclined
more towards the production department. While in the production department, I had a chance to
have a ‘hands on’ kind of training which was more practical than theoretical and as far my
knowledge goes
However, while there I noticed there was an issue that I would like to propose with my project.
The Rapid Mixer Granulator has an impeller and chopper blades which can be set to achieve
effective mixing of pharmaceutical powders. In order to carry out the mixing process, one needs
to determine the required impeller speed to mix a typical sample of powder mix effectively.
This will ensure an even distribution of all the ingredients in the mixture thus reducing assay test
failure of the final products.

The significance of this report is to determine the revolution in fast and slow speed during
granulation in a rapid mixer granulator eradicate/minimize errors that may arise due to non-
uniformity of the ingredients and also reduce production time such that there is no repetition of
production of the same product.
