Chicago. piles or drilling caissons. This type of work can be very hard on a crane due to the
vibratory nature of the work being performed.
But Tunkers, based in Germany, has developed a damper (also known as an isolator)
that absorbs the vibration. The damper has garnered the attention of several crane
manufacturers, according to Jay Mooncotch, who runs Tunkers Pile Driving Solutions,
the U.S. distributor of Tunkers dampers and a subsidiary of Imperial Cranes, based in
Chicago.
“This piece of equipment goes in between the vibratory hammer and the block of the
crane and it absorbs the vibration from the vibratory hammer,” Mooncotch said. “It
prevents the crane from getting all the vibration through the block and the boom and other
parts of the crane. It can greatly prolong the life of a crane.”
As well, this type of attachment can mean less maintenance for a crane and prevent
parts from vibrating off of a crane.
Mooncotch said he knows of jobsites where cranes have had their counterweights fall off
due to intense vibration.
“It’s very much a safety device,” he said. “An accident can also delay a job.”
Manufacturers don’t like the idea of putting a vibratory hammer or related attachment on
a crane because of the potential damage to the crane.
“Liebherr has endorsed this damper and Tadano, Link-Belt and Manitowoc are looking at
it,” he said.
Interest in the damper has been strong, and it has created new markets for crane
companies that rent or purchase them.
“It has created another market for us because people don’t use hydraulic cranes for
vibratory work,” said Mooncotch. “But they are buying these dampers because it allows
them to rent their hydraulic cranes out for this type of work because they have a damper.”
