Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

Since the last few decades technology has grown immensely and has brought

major changes globally. Communication barriers have been reduced through

technological advancement and new mediums are being introduced to connect global

audiences

Most of the forms of social media are not digital. It generates a large number of

innovations and Social Media is one of the biggest inventions of technology, which is

now most popular and widely used. We define Social Media as “technologies that made

social communication easy and enable discussions among its participants”.

Based on studies, the word social media means a web based mobile application

that allows people to, interact, and share information, in digital environment. Students

are consumers and producers of media. Most students increasingly live in a world

where information is access to communication technologies like Face book and twitter.

The use of social media has become comprehensive and currently, the most

popular social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, Viber and Google +, Skype and

smart phones. Facebook users' profiles allow the user to communicate information with

each other and allow users to build and maintain relationships and encourage others to

be a part of a community among students.

1
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

Online social websites become popular. In the last previous years, social media

is used to connect with higher education students. (Martinez-Aleman & Wartman, 2009).

It put pressure on members of faculty to use social media within the classrooms and

outside the classrooms to connect with students. In this study we will identify the

possible outcome of using Social Media to grade 11 students in STI College Novaliches

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study will determine the effects of social media in academic

performance of selected grade 11 students in STI College Novaliches during the first

semester of School Year 2018-2019

Specifically, it answers the following the problem:

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of the following student-related factors:

a) Age:

b) Sex:

c) Sex:

d) Time Spent with social media:

2. How do the respondents assess the effect of social media in Academic Performance?

2
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

3. How significant is the effect of social media to the Academic Performance of the

respondents?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the effect of social media to the Academic

Performance and profile of the respondents?

Theoretical/Conceptual framework

Philippines is one of the biggest countries in terms of internet users in the world,

with a high social and mobile audience. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,

etc. diverting students from their studies. Students spend more time on social media

than doing their studies. Even though, there is loss of privacy and safety, social media

3
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

provides opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with

shared interest.

Today, the main aim of the student should be education and their future career.

However, many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media. That

means reduced focus on learning and retaining information. The study also points out

the popularity of social networking sites among student's community.

The social media have revolutionized the world, bringing us closer than ever before.

However, students can exploit this and use it for a better life, a better tomorrow. It

should be used to connect, stay in touch, share views but not waste time on.

Also, social media can enable student to discuss or interact on various topics

related to the subject with other teacher to clarify the doubts that they have about their

study, so the students can learn easily.

According to ‘Signaling Theory’, this theory refers to how individuals on social

Media sites present themselves, and develop their identities and build trust with others.

She also adds that; Social media can influence students to perform better at their

studies. (Ahn, 2011b).

Hypothesis

• There is no significant relationship on social media in academic performances of

grade 11 I.T student in STI College Novaliches.

4
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

Significance of the study

This study was an attempt to avoid any certain issues related to Social Media in

relation to Academic Performance of the student. This study is expected to be a

contribution to the field of research and education. The significance of the study was

therefore premised on the following:

Teachers

Analysis and interpretation of the study may be used for the improvement of the

school policies, instructional lessons, staff development, programs, supervisory

practices and decision making toward a common purpose. This could also challenge the

teachers on how they would guide the students to properly use the computer

technology.

Parents and Students

The result of this study could develop concern of parent's roles and

responsibilities in providing and guiding the students to give their quality time and

learn the values of self-realization. As for students, the study can serve as a guide to

learn the basic lifelong experiences in worthy and responsible use of Social Media.

5
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

Scope and Limitations

The researchers limited the study on the effects of social media to the

respondents in relation to academic performance. The respondents of this study were

taken from Grade 11 students at STI College Novaliches. The questionnaire served as

the main instrument to gather the data needed in this study. The questions were

focused only to determine the effects of using Social Media in academic

performance of the students.

Definition of terms

Social Media. Websites and other online means of communication that are used by

large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional

contacts.

Academic. Describe things that relate to the work done in schools, which involves

studying and reasoning rather than practical or technical skills.

Technology. The purposeful application of information in the design, production, and

utilization of goods and services, and in the organization of human activities.

Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature

Social Media’s Effect on Academic Performance

Kaveri Subrahmanyam and Patricia Greenfield state that using online

communication has both negative and positive effects, because there are harmful ways

in which the internet could be used. They also state that nowadays, schools are trying

their best to control how students use digital media on school grounds (Subrahmanyam

and Greenfield, 2008).

In some schools, leaders believe that social media has a positive impact on the

development of the students’ education. In other schools, leaders have banned the

access of social network sites, because they fear the students’ interaction on them,

although, they know the positive impact social media has on the students’ education

(Ahn, 2010).

Ahn also states that the examples of the media platforms the younger generation

use are: YouTube, to share and stream videos, and Facebook, to have a complete

identity online, and a network of friends. Ahn says, researchers look at the profiles of

the social media users as part of the process needed for the students to develop their

identity (Ahn, 2010).

7
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

Positive effects of social media on student

Studies have affirmed that social media plays an important role on students in

higher education including the study conducted by Wheeler, Yeomans and Wheeler,

(2008); Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach and Ortia,(2009). In their study, they recognized four

(4) major advantages of social media usage by students in higher education which

included; enhancing relationship, improving learning motivation, offering personalized

course material, and developing collaborative abilities.

Indeed, social media has contributed greatly to facilitating learning in the 21st

century. It is shown that a greater percentage of students including those at the PhD

level commonly use social media to ameliorate their studies (Khan, 2010).

Negative effects of social media on students

Davies and Cranston (2008), enumerated some of the risks associated with

social media which included criminal activities such as identity theft and fake contacts

which is prevalent today, sexual abuse or harassment and unsuitable advertising. On

the same subject O’keeffe and Clakepearson (2011), also mentioned cyberbullying,

online harassment, sexting, facebook depression, and privacy concerns as some of the

challenges associated with social networking.

8
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

Cyberbullying is a category of bullying that occurs in the digital realm or medium

of electronic text. ‘‘It is any behavior performed through electronic or digital media by 9

individuals or groups that repeatedly communicates hostile or aggressive messages

intended to inflict harm or discomfort on others’’ (Tokunaga, 2010).

Cyberbullying is one the serious threat in the social media environment and has

called for a number of studies to determine its causes. The causes of cyberbullying

according to Calvete, Orue, Estevez, Villardon and Padilla (2010), was significantly

related with the use of proactive aggression, justification of violence, exposure to

violence and less perceived social support of friends

Local Literature

Social Media and Social Networks in the Philippines

According to the survey conducted by comScore, Inc., Philippines is one of the

biggest countries in terms of internet users in the world, with a high social and mobile

audience. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. diverting students from

their studies.

Students spend more time on social media than doing their studies. Even though,

there is loss of privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for connecting

with friends, classmates, and people with shared interest. Today, the main aim of the

student should be education and their future career. However, many students rely on

the accessibility of information on social media.

9
STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES

That means reduced focus on learning and retaining information. The study also

points out the popularity of social networking sites among student's community. The

social networking sites and social media have revolutionized the world, bringing us

closer than ever before. However, students can exploit this and use it for a better life,

a better tomorrow. It should be used to connect, stay in touch, share views but

not waste time on.

Social Media Privacy and Issues

Social Media is public in nature and the decision to post videos, pictures,

thoughts, experiences, and observations to Social Networking sites is personal, a single

act can create far reaching ethical consequences for individuals. Students and

youngsters are sometimes not mindful of what are private and public in Social

Networking sites. Several issues and concerns are being publicized for the citizens to

be aware of the risks of posting private information on the Social Networks, yet some

are giving them a shrug on their shoulders.
