2018/2019 Exercise sheet No.1

1. Discuss the goals of transportation planning ?

2. State some consequences and problems of transportation?

3. Compare between different classes of transportation plans ?

4. Discuss the concept of Urban Area ?

5. Define with sketches the meaning of the trip ?

6. Define with sketches Transportation system ?

7. Define Modes, Object, Network, Terminals ?

8. Discuss different components of the transportation system ?

9. Sketch different types of transportation networks ?

10. Study area is an important component in transportation planning. Under this Statement

Discuss in details: What is mean of study area? And what is the considerations to choose

it?

1
11. Compare in sketches and details between screen line and cordon line?

12. Discuss with sketches and details Trip classification?

13. Explain the Demand /Supply in transportation market ?

14. Given below the daily trip matrix (*1000 trips) and the shortest travel distance matrix

(km) of a study area. If the average travel speed on the network is 60 km/hr, the study area

is 26000 km2 and the length of the network is 13000 km.

Determine: The static volume, the dynamic volume, the road network density, and the

average travel distance.

15. The demand (D) and supply(S) of train service is expressed as:
2
D= 10000 – 7500 p S= 500 + 1500 p

p: price of trip (L.E/ passenger)

a) What is the equilibrium price?

b) If the price of trip is 0.68 L.E, find the required increase of supply to meet the

demand.

c) If the supply function changed to S= 1450 p, how will this affect the equilibrium

price and number of passengers?

16. For a transportation system, the demand function is expressed as: T = −12000C + 18000

while (T) is the trip number (trip/day) and (C) is the trip cost (L.E) and the equilibrium

point is at C=1.2 (L.E) and trip number 3600 (trip/day). Due to change is supply policy; a

new supply equation is introduced. The new supply increased from 4000 to 10000

(trip/day) due to increase of trip fare from 0.5 to 1.25 (L.E).

a) Find the new supply function.

b) Find the new equilibrium point.
