About the DiversityInc Top 50


Process
The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list began
in 2001, at the same time many corporations were
beginning to understand the business value of diversity-
management initiatives. Like diversity management itself,
the list has evolved significantly and continues to be
refined and improved to reflect how rapidly companies are
adapting these strategies. The 2018 survey is now
open. Click here to participate.

Participation in the list has increased every year, and for


2017 we had more than 1,800 companies. There is volatility
on the list as new companies gain strength and others
work to keep up with quickly evolving best practices.

The DiversityInc Top 50 list is derived exclusively from


corporate survey submissions. Companies are evaluated
within the context of their own industries. Subsets of the
same data submission are used to determine our other
lists.

The DiversityInc Top 50 process is editorially driven and is


not pay to play.

Participation is free. Every company that participates


receives a free report card, assessing its performance
versus all competitors overall and in four key areas of
diversity management:

 Talent Pipeline: workforce breakdown, recruitment,


diameter of existing talent, structures

 Talent Development: employee resource groups,


mentoring, philanthropy, movement, fairness

 Leadership Accountability: responsible for results,


personal communications, visibility

 Supplier Diversity: spend with companies owned by


people from underrepresented groups, accountability,
support

company makes the DiversityInc Top 50 list or one of the

EY earns the top spot on this year’s DiversityInc Top 50


Companies for Diversity list following an impressive
performance since joining the list in 2001. Prior to this
year’s competition, EY had ranked among the Top 10 for the
past eight years — seven of those years in the Top 5.

EY says its values and business strategies are firmly


rooted in diversity and inclusiveness, which is evident by
its results across this space. The company landed on
nine specialty lists this year, including No. 1 for Diversity
Councils, Employee Resource Groups, People with
Disabilities and Mentoring. EY says its D&I Roadmap and
Americas Inclusiveness Advisory Council (IAC) — co-
chaired by Steve Howe, U.S. Chairman and Americas
Managing Partner, and Karyn Twaronite, Global and
Americas Diversity & Inclusiveness Officer — help drive
EY’s inclusive culture.

EY holds its leaders accountable for equitably mentoring,


sponsoring and advancing talent, and empowers its people
to have courageous conversations about pressing D&I
issues. Following a number of powerful conversations about
race among its IAC, ethnic minority partners and U.S.
Executive Committee, EY hosted a webcast on the topic
with all of its U.S. leaders. After the tragedies last summer
in Louisiana, Minnesota, Texas and elsewhere, Howe sent a
message to all EY people in the U.S. encouraging them to
engage in candid dialogue about race.

Meanwhile, EY last year became the first among


professional services firms to equalize paid parental leave.
New mothers and fathers welcoming a child through birth,
adoption, surrogacy, foster care or legal guardianship are
now eligible for up to 16 weeks of fully paid leave.

EY also seeks to think creatively to recruit diverse talent,


and one of those efforts is its Neurodiversity Account
Support Associate program, which creates opportunities
for high-functioning individuals with autism.

Kaiser Permanente is committed to advancing diversity at


every level of the organization. More than 60 percent of the
organization’s total workforce are members of racial,
ethnic and cultural minorities, and more than 73 percent
are women.

Ethnic, racial and cultural minorities make up more than


half of Kaiser Permanente’s management and professional
workforce, with 75 percent of them women.

In 2016, female representation in the organization’s C-Suite


for its Health Plan organization was 29 percent. Kaiser
Permanente has also maintained a 50 percent
representation of women on the Executive Medical
Directors group — the highest executive medical group at
the organization.

This commitment to diversity and inclusion starts right at


the top of the organization with Chairman and CEO Bernard
J. Tyson. Tyson personally signs off on executive
compensation tied to diversity, diversity metrics and
progress and goals and achievements for supplier diversity.

Many Kaiser Permanente employees participate in


Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which they refer to as
Multicultural Business Resource Groups (MBRGs) or Unit
Based Teams (UBTs). The company has a total of 12 groups,
which are open to all employees, and more than 3,500
chapters.

The DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity survey is
an editorial process, with rankings determined solely by
empirical data submitted by participating companies to the
application, which requires more than 150 fields of data.

Companies that do business with DiversityInc, including


our Benchmarking service, do not receive any preferential
treatment.
Participation is free and every company that completes the
survey receives a detailed free report card assessing its
performance in the four key areas measured: Talent
Pipeline, Talent Development, Leadership Accountability

DiversityInc Top 50 Methodology


The DiversityInc Top 50 ranking is based on empirical data
obtained through organizations filling out the survey.
Participation is free and companies that do business with
DiversityInc receive no preferential treatment.

• The survey is the most rigorous, data-driven analysis


gauging detailed demographics based on race/ethnicity and
gender at some of the largest U.S. employers, all in an
effort to better assess initiatives to hire, retain and
promote women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBT
and veterans.

• The survey tracks human capital outcomes and connects


them with best practices utilized to promote the
advancement of underrepresented groups in the workplace.
And results are highly regarded by media, corporations,
government agencies, academia and the public at large
thanks to the exhaustive vetting of data tracking real
diversity on the ground.

• With more than 200 sophisticated questions — everything


from women representation in the corner offices, to Blacks
and Latinos getting promotions into management, to
manager accountability when it comes to promoting
diversity — applicants can see how they truly stack up
against their competition and beyond when it comes to
championing diversity.
• The survey also tracks demographics outside of the
employers’ internal workforce, tracking primary and
secondary supplier diversity as a reflection of a larger
diversity commitment.

• Cutting edge SAS analytics software is used to assess


submissions, and accomplished and credentialed data and
analytics experts oversee the process. The data is entirely
confidential and kept on three secure, separate, dedicated
servers. Data is retained to allow for year-to-year
comparisons.

• To be eligible for the list, participants must:

 Have at least 1,000 U.S. employees

 Submit a notarized form signed by either the CEO, the


chief human resources officer (CHRO) or a corporate
officer (other than the chief diversity officer or person
responsible for diversity & inclusion) affirming that all
data submitted is accurate. All data considered for
DiversityInc Top 50 rankings is U.S.-based (except the
Top Companies for Global Diversity list).

DiversityInc Top 50 Data Security


Policy and Procedures
Data Submission Security Process

An alphanumeric code is assigned to each company and


cannot be used by any other organization. All IP addresses
for every session utilizing your company’s unique code are
tracked. Our data-management practices are ISO/IEC 27002
compliant.

Data Storage

The web-based survey tool, the statistical-analysis system


and all data submissions are on three separate dedicated
servers at a leading IT company that deploys a multilayered
physical security approach and complies with the U.S.–EU
Safe Harbor Framework and the U.S.–Swiss Safe Harbor
Framework.

Data are retained for year-to-year aggregate trending


information.

Access to Data at DiversityInc

Administrative access is limited to two DiversityInc


employees and credentials are changed every 30 days.

Confidentiality Agreements

Because of the volume of participants (we estimate more


than 1,000 this year), we will not sign individual
agreements. This published statement applies to all
companies submitting data.

DiversityInc, Subpoenas and Lawsuits

The DiversityInc Top 50 survey is a purely editorial process


and, therefore, is subject to state laws on source
confidentiality. Since DiversityInc is headquartered in New
Jersey, which has one of the strongest shield laws in the
country to protect source privacy, we have never agreed to
even cooperate with a lawsuit in 15 years of running the
survey. If subpoenaed, we will not testify, even if asked
whether a company has submitted data.

How DiversityInc Top 50 Data Are Analyzed

We use SAS software and have developed algorithms to


statistically evaluate the data we collect. The evaluation is
metrics driven. We measure respondents’ answers based
on their assessment against other organizations with

Credibility of Submission

We require the CEO, the CHRO or another corporate officer


to sign every submission (notarized). This applies to all
companies.

Why are you asking companies to submit EEO-1 information


this year?

We are giving extra credit to companies that either send us


a link to a public disclosure of their EEO-1 numbers or send
us the information separately. We will not publish their
EEO-1 data. The EEO-1 data will be compared with the
DiversityInc submission.

Do you share any of our data with the public when the list
is announced or do you write about it?

We only publish information about companies that make


the DiversityInc Top 50 list or one of our Specialty Lists.
Any information that is shared is positive and does not
disclose human-capital data.
