I welcome the publication of East West University annual report 20l2.This year we have embarked on the 16th year of our
journey at East West University. In terms of time, we are quite young. But the successes, as summarized in this report, made
within such a short period have greatly enhanced our visibility and acceptability in the community we live in. Newer academic
programs, ever-increasing logistic support, merit nurturing and need based fmancial assistance, competent teachers, zero
tolerance to indiscipline, and a firm commitment to excellence are the hallmarks of East West University. Several international
evaluating agencies have consistently ranked us in the top segment of their lists. However, there is no room for complacency.
We are continuing to 'strive for greater achievements in enhancing the quality and relevance of education at EWU. Our goal is
to become one of the best of our kind in South Asia, and we think we are well on our way to achieve that goa\.
In October 1996 we made a humble beginning with only two departments, 20 students, 6 faculty members and a handful of
staff. Now we have 197 full time teachers, 142 adjunct teachers and an enrollment of about 8500 students admitted on the basis
of stringent criteria for admission. EWU has ten departments offering undergraduate degrees in 11 subjects and graduate
degrees in l3 subjects. This has all been possible through the untiring efforts of all concerned--faculty members in particular as
well as the staff, students, and members of the Board of Trustees.
This year has been a particularly productive one for the university. We have moved to our new campus. It is a large and elegant
structure with an array of state-of-the-art facilities best suited to offering a quality education and creating a supportive
environment for our students. It is to be noted with pride that we have constructed our new campus of four hundred fiftynine
thousand square feet on a 7.5 bigha plot with our own available resources without putting additional pressure on our hard-
pressed student guardians. Neither have we indebted the future community of students by any bank borrowing.
Making tertiary education accessible to a large number of gifted students from the middle class has been a significant priority
for the university management. This year saw the implementation of the same generous scholarship policy that provides
financial assistance of full tuition and half tuition waivers. There are Medha Lalan Funds, Freedom Fighters Scholarships and
other special and need-based financial assistance programs. This year alone we have allocated more than Taka 34 million for
merit and need based scholarships which accounted for more than 4% of tuition fees received and more than 12% of the total
students enrolled. It is noteworthy that EWU has set aside specific scholarships for the children of freedom fighters .
Though teaching is our main objective, research is also an indivisible part of EWU academic ethos. We have established a
Centre for Research and Training (CRT) and a Software Development Center. CRT publishes two refereed journals per year.
Throughout the semesters EWU campus buzzes with workshops, seminars, and conferences, some of them international. The
EWU faculty members are outstanding by any measure and are actively engaged in sustained research activities. Their research
pUblications are quite -impressive in scope, quality, and frequency. They transfer their research findings to their classroom
pedagogy. The younger-faculty members enjoy generous study leave to pursue higher studies abroad with full pay. Some
exceptionally gifted students are also having their research work published in international journals.
At EWU we have adopted a holistic approach to imparting education to our students. We bring together two crucially important
spheres of our students' education-the curricular and the extracurricular. Eaucation at EWU is a participatory process. We have
numerous clubs that regularly feature events such as plays, music, debates, sports, picnics, study tours, etc.
I extend my heartiest thanks to those who have worked hard in the preparation of this annual report.

Message from the Vice Chancellor
This Annual Report contains information about the events, activities and developments of the University during the last
calendar year and presents data reflecting its present status.
The most important event last year was the shifting of the entire University in May 2012 from the rented buildings at
Mohakhali to Aftabnagar. We are proud to operate now in our own campus. It is a beautiful building that has become a
landmark in this part of the city and has become one of the most accessible places in this city after'the completion of the
Hatir Jheel project.
This University always gives unstinting support for the development of facilities for its faculty members, the .staff and of
course the students. In the new campus state of the art measures have been taken to ensure security, comfort and
functionality. Some problems remain, but are being taken care of. And the process of landscaping has just begun, .which,
when completed, will blend with the unique architecture to create an ambiance conducive to leamingand doing research
oomparable to the best campuses in this region.
Apart from a physical shift to a more expansive location, we have also augmented our curricula to include a number of new
fIlI«"M11S However, we are committed to excellence in education and such expansions are always based on an honest
" - I of our ability to run the programs to our satisfaction.
I . . the team that has produced this Annual Report and hope the readers will be convinced about the amount of hard
that they have put on it.

accounting policies and other explanatory information.
Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial

internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of
financial statements that are free from material misstatement whether due to fraud or
error.
AudItors Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express An opinion on these financiAl statements based on our
audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Bangladesh Standards on Auditing.
Those standards require that we comply with ethIcal requirements and plan and perform
the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free
from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and
disclosures m the fmandal statem.cnts. The procedures selected depend on the auditor's
judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial
statements, whether due to fraud or error, In making those risk assessments. the auditor
considers internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the
financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the
circumstances but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the
entity's internal control. An audit al$O includes evaluating the appropriateness of
accounting polides used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by
management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation 01 the financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to
provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Unqualified Opinion
In our opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, (or give a
true and fair view of) the financial position of East West University, as at June 30,2012,
and (of) its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance
with Bangladesh Financial Reporting Standards.
