Chemistry Honors Internetivity

Acid-Base Internetivity
(30 Points)
General Instructions: Follow the link provided in each of the three sections and complete the
activities or questions in each section. In all sections, you should use the provided link to
complete the activities. You could use a different internet resource, but it is unlikely to be as
quick and efficient as following the given links.

Activity 1: Using Khan Academy to Find Conceptual Information About Acids and Bases.
Link: Khan Academy Acid-Base
Instructions: Use either the instructional videos or instructional articles from the Acid-Base
section from the Khan Academy Website to answer the following questions. It will take some
background knowledge in acids and bases to have an idea about which video or article will be
most helpful in finding the answer. As always, work in groups to combine your knowledge and
find the information faster. Also, working in groups allows your team to look at multiple videos
or articles at the same time. Work on each question as a group, not individually. This will be
faster in the long run and help develop collaboration skills.

#1 What happens at the molecular level when a strong acid is mixed into solution. Write a
sample chemical equation to represent the interaction. (2 points)

#2 What happens at the molecular level when a strong base is mixed into solution. Write a
sample chemical equation to represent the interaction. (2 points)

Equation:

#3 Give step-by-step instructions for preparing a buffer solution using Acetic Acid and
Sodium Acetate. (5 points)

Activity 2: Using an Online Simulator to Answer Acid-Base Questions

Link: Acid-Base Simulation
Instructions: Use the simulation tool to answer the following questions. The simulator
is relatively straightforward but may take a little bit of adjusting to get used to it. Once
you understand the simulator, it will take some critical thinking to answer the
questions. Work together and share ideas to get to the correct answers.
Hint: You may not be able to find the answers directly. Use the simulator in conjunction
with some problem solving and calculations.
#1 How many moles of strong acid are required to create a solution with a pH of 1.5?
(2 points)

#2 How many moles of strong base are required to create a solution with a pH of 12.5?
(2 points)

#3 Come up with a standard chemical equation when an acid is mixed with a base.
(4 points)
Hint: Use the given equations in the simulator for acid and base dissociation.

Activity 3: Using a Virtual Lab to Answer More Complex Acid-Base Questions

Link: Virtual Lab
Instructions: Follow the link to the virtual Acid-Base Lab and answer the following questions.
Again, the interface may take some getting used to. Play around with the solutions and
communicate with your group members to figure out the most efficient ways to mix your
solutions and record pH.
Hint: To pour one solution into another, put both solutions onto your workbench and drag and
drop them onto one another. This will allow you to select the volume you wish to pour.
#1 How many mL of 10.0M NaOH do I need to add to 100 mL of 1.0M NaOH to get a solution
that is 5.0M in NaOH? (please show your work) (2 points)

#2 How many mL of 10.0M HCl do I need to add to 100 mL of 10.0M NaOH to get a solution
with a pH of 7.0? (please show your work) (2 points)

#3 If 75 mL of 1.00M HCl is added to 100 mL 1.00M NaOH, what is the pH of the resulting
solution? (please show your work) (4 points)

#4 How many mL of 1.00M HCl do I need to add to 10.0 mL of 1.00M NaOH to get a solution
with a pH of 1.00? (please show your work) (5 points)
