He began playing the guitar at the age often and died with Antonio. Rebello and later with Oscar Caceres. In 962 he made his debut as a recialist in Rio. de Janeiro and followed this with an extensve tour of Brazil In 1963, at the hnvitation of the Museu Villa-Lobos, he gave the fist complete formance of the Twelve Shudiex Two. years later Turiio Santos won frst prize in the prestigious ORTF International Guitar Competition in Paris In 1968 he made the first ever cording ofthe entire set of the Twelve Studies, Since these early years of his career Turibio Santos has stablished his reputation as one of the most distinguished uitarists of Brazil. He has appeared with major orchestras throughout the world and achieved international acclaim for his many recordings on the Erato label. Thus he is uniquely qualified s one of the foremost authorities on the guitar music of Heitor ila-Lobos in the 1950's Turibio Stntos attended seminars with the composer and became closely asociated with many of U musicians of Rio de Janeiro with whom Villa Lobos had worked. As one might expect, this book is intensely Brazilian relies to some extent on ‘the readers knowledge of Brazil's istorical and cultural background anil on some awareness of th local musi, customs and personalities of Rio de Janeiro.
