PT

no meio.

turfeira localizado do lado contrário do caminho térreo;
PT
diversos mouchões com vegetação turfófila;
ponderá à definição mais estrita do “Lameiro das Cebolas”;

javalis (Sus scrofa), bastante comuns e cujos vestígios (pegadas e revolvimento
(Pyrrhula pyrrhula), o Gaio (Garrulus glandarius), o Chapim-real (Parus major),
Chapim-azul (Parus caeruleus) e a Águia d’ asa-redonda (Buteo buteo).

tats disponíveis (desde lameiros, zonas ribeirinhas, zonas montanhosas, zonas
24
O Homem é ainda outro agente da variabilidade paisagística existente no local. Ha-
As aldeias

toda la turbera situada en el lado opuesto del camino de tierra;
producen varios islotes aluviales con vegetación turbófila;
ción más exacta de “Lameiro das Cebolas”;

MAYOR’S MESSAGE
It is with great pleasure that we willingly face the challenge set by this candida-
ture. All of us are aware that the current concerns regarding nature conservation
and biodiversity preservation are a unique challenge to allow the improvement
of quality of life and well being of populations. To achieve that, it is imperative to
involve everyone, because without biodiversity there is no healthy future or life,
much less qualified territories able to stimulate new economic dynamics for the
natural spaces, always with the goal of assuring balance.
That is why it is necessary and urgent to deepen the relationship between the
human communities on those natural spaces and their biodiversity, in order to
contribute strongly to a society that is more active and committed to the manage-
ment of biodiversity conservation and, thus, avoid the degradation of habitats and
the threatening of species that are essential for nature preservation and to assure
our collective future. In Portugal, the environment has become an indispensable
value in tourism strategies. The association of touristic products to the territory is
transforming the touristic spaces into spaces of environmental preservation and
places of heritage of existing resources.
The great meaning that sustainability and biodiversity preservation carry today
for constructing the heritage of future generations, created the need to assume
the shapes on Earth’s surface as heritage, accepting natural monuments, by its
importance as a legacy, as an educational support and as part of a process made ES
of economical dynamics associated with nature tourism. Thus emerges the eco-
nomic aspect, viewed through the profit achieved by an investment that seeks to
give expression to the biological heritage of the region, through conservation and
study processes that turn resources into touristic products.
We are sure that nature conservation and biodiversity preservation are ways to
make our territory richer. Similarly, they can contribute to reducing tourism’s se-
asonality by creating stimulus which will, in turn, create a territorial actractivity
which will decisively contribute to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants.

1.2 ENVIRONMENTAL FRAMEWORK
Lameiro das Cebolas is located within the Protected Area of Corno de Bico, near
the South border of this nature conservation area. The creation of this Protected
Landscape was based on the importance of a diversified group of endangered
habitats and species in Europe, among which are the peat bog habitats, such as
the one in Lameiro das Cebolas.

2. FEATURES
2.1 INTRODUCTION
These habitats play a vital role in the nutrient and water cycles. In the carbon
cycle, peat bogs play a leading role in the accumulation of fossil carbon – turf –
which ends up being extracted and used as fuel in several European countries.
As to water cycle, peat bogs are true water reservoirs, absorbing it when there is
excessive rain and freeing it slowly and gradually towards the underground aquif- ES
erous during dry seasons. In absorbing rain water, not only do they avoid potential
local droughts, but also help avoid nutrient leaching and soil erosion. Ions, some
of which are toxic, are captured during plant development, and one may thus say
that peat bogs also have a duty of environmental purification. In case of forest
fires or drought, peat bogs may be a refuge for biodiversity and for fire propaga-
tion prevention, or also constitute a hub of life and hydration for adjacent burnt
land. Thanks to the low decomposing rates, human activity tracks and other fossil
evidence are highly preserved, also turning peat bogs into an important palaeon-
tologic “archive”. They are a source of food and water for humans and animals,
valued places for learning, study, leisure and tourism.
As habitats which are generally limited to very particular topographic and climatic
conditions, peat bogs are an important hub of biodiversity and the exclusive habi-
tat for many flora and fauna species which are very selective in terms of ecologi-
cal specificity.

2.2 PEAT BOG BIOLOGY
ES
Several aspects of turf colonization and free water plans by moss species, especially the Sphagnum type
These plants have two characteristics that make them vital in a peat bog. Because
they have no roots or internal conductor tissues, they absorb water through a wide
network of capillary spaces capable of great water retention. This capacity, to-
gether with infiltration inside the turf, allows a great volume of water to be kept
below the peat bog surface all year round. The other characteristic is its high cation
exchange capacity, which allows acidification of these plants’ environment, which,
in this manner, may use this exchange as a means to obtain nutrients, which are
scarce in this environment. In creating an acid environment, the Sphagnum is cre-
ating an ideal environment for its growth and reducing competition, for most vas-
cular plants do not tolerate low nutrient levels or acid and wet environments.

2.3 LAMEIRO DAS CEBOLAS ORGANIZATION
• Zone 0: a water dam in the water course spring that flows through the whole
peat bog located opposite the earth path;
• Zone 1: First peat bog soil formation area, whose banks include a variety of turf
vegetation islets;
• Zone 2: Connecting water course that links zone 1 to zone 3 and which is con-
sidered part of the peat bog because it allows the continuity of water supply to
the downstream areas.
• Zone 3: Zone where the peat bog is larger and where it is currently a hydroturf
meadow. It is similar to a wide and long corridor and it is considered the best
definition for “Lameiro das Cebolas”;
• Zone 4: Terminal wide zone, proper for restoration actions, due to the moderate
steep that allows larger submersion and greater sediment stability.

PEAT BOG AREA
Several structural and micro-topographic aspects of the small dam that feeds the stream that runs
through the peat bog and of the remaining areas that comprise the Lameiro das cebolas peat bog ecosystem
In general terms, Lameiro das Cebolas currently has a decrease and vulgariza-
tion of the diversity of vegetal species, since the well conserved peat bogs’ typical
communities were progressively replaced by formations which are more tolerant
to human and cattle presence. However, this peat bog is also characterized by the
presence of the two habitats in Annex 1 of the Habitats Directive, which are typical
of peat bog vegetation, although they are somewhat degraded, and several very
interesting plant species in terms of conservation, such as a moss that is very
rare in Portugal and only typical in peat bogs, Bruchia vogesiaca Schwaegr., and
the Menyanthes trifoliata, a vascular plant with limited distribution in the North of
Portugal.
So, generally, the peat bog flora is typical of water courses and wet and cold areas
and is briefly organized in two fundamental types of habitats defined in the Habi-
tats directive:
EN
58
The “7140 – Transition peat bogs and waved turf, subtype 2 – Atlantic peat
bogs” habitat is characterized by low nutrient water communities and it receives
rain and underground water (spring), typical from the mountainous areas of strong
Atlantic influence in the Northeast of the country. These communities develop in
wet and turf accumulated soils in the edge of depressions and bases of slopes
with accumulated or slow flowing water. This habitat occupies a very restricted
area in Lameiro das Cebolas and has a very reduced Sphagnum coverage, be-
ing dominated, among the vascular plants, by Juncus bulbosus, Arnica montana
subsp. atlantica and several sedges. It is in this habitat that the Menyanthes tri-
foliata develops.

2.4.2 FAUNA
Since a peat bog is a wet habitat, there are several species which find shelter
and food in its different life or reproduction cycles, from invertebrates, such as
dragon-flies, slugs or other insects, to small amphibious vertebrates, such as the
Iberian frog (Rana iberica) or the Iberian emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi), or
even great mammals such as wild hogs (Sus scrofa), which are very common and
whose tracks (footsteps and turf rotation) are easily seen, for these animals usu-
ally revolve vegetation in search of roots and bulbs to feed themselves and seek
PT turf for refreshment.
On the other hand, and in spite of it not being its living habitat, the Iberian Wolf
(Canis lupus signatus) uses the area surrounding the peat bog as a place for am-
bushing the young bovines and equines. Another of its preys, the Deer (Capreolus
capreolus), lives in the same leafy woods.
Avifauna is also abundant, and it is possible to find the bright coloured Kingfisher
(Alcedo attis), and the Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa), the Eurasian Bullfinch
(Pyrrhula pyrrhula), Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius), Great Tit (Parus major),
Blue Tit, (Parus caeruleus) and the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).
There are also some domestic animals with interest to agricultural production and
to the conservation of local Portuguese breeds. One can find the Garrano horse
(Equus caballus) which is a small horse (approximately 1.30m), brown in colour
and is, genetically, the most similar relative of the primitive horse, and the bovine
breeds (Bos taurus) Cachena and Barrosã, which are typical from the region and
are characterized by the size of their horns.

2.5 IMPORTANCE FOR CONSERVATION
In Portugal there are no great sized peat bogs, because our climate strongly
differs from the places where they are typical from, such as Ireland or Canada,
where there is more rain and temperatures are even lower than in our country.
The strong seasonality of the thermal and rainfall rate and the dry and hot
summer months in Portugal, essential to keeping the levels of humidity and
low temperature, impede the forming of extensive peat bogs, which occur only
in granite areas, sandy and flooded soils, in regions with specific topographic
and bioclimatic characteristics. ES
Currently, in the continental, territory there are structured and relatively pre-
served peat bogs in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in Serra de Arga and in
the Corno de Bico Protected landscape, in Serra da Freita and Serra de Mon-
temuro, in Serra da Estrela and in Serra de Monchique. They can also be found
in the archipelago of the Azores and Madeira, which, in spite of smaller, are
also subject to wetter and colder air mass. Portugal is considered the Euro-
pean southeast limit of peat bogs, and has many floral originalities.
Peat bog importance is also reinforced by the fact that these habitats are
protected by community legislation (Community Directive 92/43/EEC, of
21/5/92), given its extreme vulnerability and increasing decrease of its exten-
sion a little all over the world. Currently, peat bog vegetation in the Peninsular
West has enormous interest for conservation, and the Corno de Bico protected
landscape is one of its representation places, even if in small and somewhat
disturbed, but currently undergoing recovery, limited areas.

3. VALORIZATION
As habitats which depend on a vast network of water, climatic and biotic interac-
tions, peat bogs strongly react to disturbances and aggressions of human activities
or alterations of natural cycles. The future of Portuguese peat bogs is undoubtedly
dependant on ecological restoration, management and monitoring plans, because
the exploration mode currently used by the populations is not sustainable at all.
PT The great vulnerability of a peat bog and of the fauna and flora associated to it
comes from the fact that it is the result of equilibrium between numerous environ-
mental aspects, which limit the sustained exploration of this type of ecosystems.
Pasture has forever occupied the Ridges of the Alto-Minho region, cleverly using
its natural resources, especially in the period from May to October, when animals
pastured in the mountain alone or accompanied by shepherds. On the other hand,
the forest was extense and the sheltered and heat protected pasture areas dur-
ing summer were abundant. Today, animals pasture the mountains unsupervised,
forest fires have destroyed great part of the forests and in the bush areas, the “fire
culture” for regeneration of pasture leads to soil degradation. Top sides, adequate
for pasture, have bushes while the slopes and shoresides which are adequate for
mixed leafy and resinous forests are used for pasture. All this scenery of altera-
tion of the pasture dynamics led to a larger degradation and pressure of the peat
bogs, chosen by the cattle as preferred rest and food areas.
Thus, the largest threat factor to the conservation of Lameiro das Cebolas as
ES natural area of biological interest is the intense animal pressure over the peat bog
and adjacent areas, which has systematically caused its degradation. Domestic
and wild animals in the Corno de Bico protected landscape chose the peat bog
as a place for rest and access to water. Horses, in particular, prefer this area in
comparison to others created for this purpose in its surrounding, causing the de-
struction of the vegetation, the eutrophication of the environment and the altera-
tion of the micro-topography of the water line, the peat bog and the surrounding
embankments.

3.2 ECOLOGIC RESTORATION
The intervention in Lameiro das Cebolas became necessary from the point when
the hydrologic functioning of the stream does not allow stabilizing of the water
for regeneration of the peat bog vegetation layer. Due to soil treading by wild ani-
mals, but especially by unsupervised domestic animals, water flows quicker in the
stream channel, due to the opening of grooves caused by the treading of those
animals, making it impossible to stabilize turf deposition and flora colonization of
the peat bog in flowing water areas.
Besides higher water speed, the physical and chemical water properties in sub-
PT mersion and flow areas have also been consecutively altered by soil nitrification
due to animal feces, thus making it difficult for some flora species which are de-
pendent of, or prefer, acid and low-nutrient soils to grow.
The severe loss of turf in the peat bog, besides the decrease of characteristic spe-
cies, is a strong indicator of extreme degradation and, in this case, the implemen-
tation of measures to restore hydrology and biochemical cycles of the peat bog is
ES vital for the return of the species and consequent turf formation and accumula-
tion.
In this ground-breaking restoration initiative, the peat bog intervention had two
different phases. Initially, a recovery phase was implemented through the placing
of a fence around the topographic limit, with the purpose of stopping the degrada-
tion of the area by the identified threat factors. After stopping the degradation, the
reduction of the water flow speed currently verified and which currently degrades
the areas that touch it was planned by inserting disencountered and successive
vegetation blockages in the existing channel and creating diverging channels, thus
improving water retention and the submersion levels as free water planes on the
peat bog surface.
EN
64 Lameiro das Cebolas
For the second phase, some restoration acceleration and reinforcement measures
were planned by increasing the peat bog’s surface microtopography heterogene-
ity and the representation of microhabitats to improve the submersion and water
infiltration conditions in the organic matter deposit layers. This second phase also
evaluated the need for Sphagnum propagule dissemination throughout the sev-
eral peat bog areas where the substratum may be more exposed and the distance
from populations of this species is great.
Still within the scope of this project and to take advantage of the area and demon-
strate its value to the public, an educational course was created and information
signs shall be installed along this course for visitor support purposes.
ES

EN

3.4 PEAT BOG RECOVERY AND MONITORING EXPECTATIONS
It is also foreseen that the restoration measures proposed in this work shall lead
to the improvement of hydrology and to the prevention of damages made by her-
bivores so that the stabilizing species which form the turf are installed and regen-
erate. However, it is possible that in the future it is necessary to open the area to
animals, because peat bogs in full functioning benefit from a controlled pasture
and from the action of other small herbivores that create localized disturbances
and create primocolonization opportunities for many pioneer species. For this rea-
son, the objective of monitoring is to verify the peat bog recovery process assuring
PT the forecasts about the area’s evolution are met. Below is a proposal of indicator
parameters to monitor, in order to evaluate the development of the restoration
and adjust the intervention measures, if necessary. Thus, it would be appropriate
to evaluate:
• The soil pH, because it is important that it remains acid to guarantee that the
Sphagnum colonizes that soil;
• The vegetation coverage, especially of species belonging to the Sphagnum ge-
nus, for with a relatively stable coverage of the vegetation the demand for the
establishment of the turf forming species is met;
• The volume of the dam water and of the water that runs along the peat bog,
measuring parameters such as water quality, namely pH, and the Biochemical oxy-
gen demand (BOD) and conductivity, because it is important to assure the quality
of the water received by the peat bog.

4. PEDAGOGICAL PATHS
Pedagogical paths established for visiting and interpretation of the Lameiro das
Cebolas peat bog were designed so that there are two alternatives of duration and
level of difficulty/accessibility for the different types of visitors.
Thus, both paths (Paths 1 (1.5 Km) and 2 (1.2 Km)), start in the parking lot, where
two small peat bog nucleuses, which were in advanced phase of degradation be-
fore the intervention, and dam area of the spring stream that runs along the peat
bog area can be seen. Walking downstream along the left bank, through a more
abrupt leafy wood area until the stream, we reach an observation spot which al-
lows us to see the panorama of the Campo das Cebolas peat bog and of the sur-
rounding area in a extremely wide morass area. Continuing down the left margin
we reach the second observation spot, where, additionally, there is a shelter for
observation of the fauna. A basin where waters flow slower and where the ampli-
tude of the peat bog’s terminal area is well visible formed in this area.
In this second observation spot, Path 2 (1.2 Km) is less difficult, the return journey
is through an unpaved road leading to the parking lot, while Path 1 (1.5 Km) out-
lines the peat bog through its terminal part leading to a dense forest area where
a wooden bridge allows accessing the right margin. When we start going up, the
landscape changes, and from the leafy woods it becomes a bushy, resinous for-
est. There are some observation spots around the peat bog and you can go to the
natural observatories in the surrounding ridges. When reaching the unpaved road,
under the leafy woods, we return to the parking lot.

5. CORNO DE BICO
DESCRIPTION AND ACTIVITIES
PT
The Corno de Bico Protected landscape (PPCB) falls administratively in the Nor-
thern Portugal’s NUT II, and on the NUT III of Minho Lima. It integrates the hea-
dwaters of the three main rivers in Alto Minho – Coura, Labrujo e Vez, which belong
to the Minho river basin (Coura) and the Lima river basin (Labrujo e Vez).
Despite not having a very large area, Corno de Bico presents a considerable diver-
sity of fauna and flora, with 439 different species of flora and 188 species of
vertebrates. The most locally common species of flora is the Pedunculate Oak,
main component of the oak forests, typical of the region (a well-preserved vegeta-
tion, which occupies 25% of landscape area), but beyond that there are species of
flora endemic, rare or endangered which greatly increase the relevance of PPCB
from a conservation standpoint. When it comes to fauna, the situation is similar:
on this region we can find the deer, the otter, and the Garrano horse, but there are
many other species whose conservation value elevate the Protected Landscape to
EN
68
a different level. The key that allows the existence of this admirable diversity is the
variety of available habitats (from marshes, riparian zones, mountain areas, are-
as of woods, a peat bog, and others), the interaction between them, and the region’s
climatic conditions that allow this area to provide a wide range of excellent food,
shelter and reproduction resources for several species.
Man is yet another agent of the variability that exists in the local landscape. Inha-
bitant of the area since Neolithic times, we find traces of history and culture of
this people everywhere: from the funerary monuments and fortified villages, the
granaries and water mills, to the low walls and terraces that lace the landscape
and allow farming. The villages of white washed houses dot the hillsides, contras-
ting harmoniously with the green vegetation and the blue limpid rivers (Labruja,
Coura and Vez) and streams.
In such an inviting region, there are many options for how to make a visit for the
best. For nature lovers, there is no better and healthier way of cementing the com-
munion with the natural world than to perform one of the walking routes that
pass through PPCB. Within the framework of PPCB’s Education Program for Sus-
tainability, which is based on the theoretical assumption that local development
projects and environmental education for sustainability must be comprehensive
and integrate the various skills in the construction of various aspects, including:
raising awareness, building environmental attitudes and values, knowledge and
development of skills for action and participation, CEIA (Center for Environmental
Education and Interpretation) develops several projects of joint construction be-
tween the Corno de Bico Protected Landscape, the local community and visitors.
The “Participate to develop” project, built with the local population in view of
disseminating actions and measures proposed in the plan for contributing to sus- ES
tainable management, the project “Living (in) our protected area”, carried out
with schools and the thematic visits (interpretative walking trails, workshops and
activities at the Laboratory of Nature) carried out with school groups and visitors,
and the project “Nature Tourism in PPCB” that provides visitors with a diverse set
of environmental activities.
There is still a considerable number of companies that offer a wide range of activi-
ties in Corno de Bico, from horse-riding, to radical sports, and others, so a visit to
the Corno de Bico Protected Landscape website is encouraged (www.cornodebi-
co.pt). There, you will find all contact information needed to book these activities.
Thus, in addition to being a shrine of great natural beauty, the Corno de Bico Pro-
tected Landscape is a region that offers privileged conditions to the enjoyment and
leisure in a healthy and enriching way, allowing one to enjoy fresh air and a unique
closeness to nature.
