According to Marwan Zaid Bataineh (2013) the study investigated the academic
stressors experienced by the students at university. A total sample of 232 subjects participated
in this study were obtained from faculty of education at KSU. The result showed that
academic overloads, course awkward, inadequate time to study, workload every semester,
exams awkward, low motivation, and high family expectations were drive moderately stress
among students. It was also found that fear of failure is the major source of stress among
undergraduate students. Lastly, the study found that there were no significant differences in
academic stress among students with different, level of study and specializations.
According to Rajasekar (2013) the study examined the impact of academic stress
among the management students. Stress management encompasses techniques to equip a
person with effective coping mechanisms for dealing with psychological stress. Students have
different expectations, goals and values that they want to fulfill, which is only possible if they
are integrated with that of the institution. The objective of the study is to find out the present
level of stress, sources of stress and stress management techniques that would be useful for
management students. The study takes into account various criteria like physical,
psychological, individual, demographical and environmental factors of stress among the
management students.
Stress and Mental Health
Stress can be defined by various means of psychological, emotional, mental, physical
and in other forms. It mainly starts from unhealthy environment which can be from the
unexpected childhood and goes till lifelong. There are various studies saying that Indians are
the highest sufferers of stress due to lack of employment, intimate
relationships, betrayal, unexpected childhood, etc. this has sometimes lead the childhood to
intimate relationships with peer groups which is often justified by stressors to get rid out of
stress. In order to get out of stress they get addicted to smoking, consuming liquor and drugs
are common among adolescent and adults. One in four people in the world will be affected by
mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people
currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of
ill-health and disability worldwide. Presently in India alone there around 3.5 percent of
stressors in which 10 to 17 percent of them are in the primary stages of stress. Many of them
do not know that they are affected by stress and if they know they are affected by stress they
do not know how and where toget treatment. Often they fear that the society will think

Stress does not spare students either. With the admission season going on now, it does
not help to know that the cut-off percentage for admission to many colleges has seen a
meteoric rise. According to a study, 72 per cent of students in India are unaware of how to
deal with stress and its ill-effects. A NIMHANS study has found that 11 per cent of college
students and 7-8 per cent of high school students have attempted suicide because of exam
stress. And, 27.6 per cent of IT professionals in the country are addicted to narcotic drugs,
says the study. According to the Legatum Prosperity Index (2015), India ranks 99 among 142
countries that have been assessed in these sectors. Education, being the most fundamental
need of any developing country, should be the number one priority for India. In education
sector, our country ranks 92, which is way behind the ranks of other developing countries
such as Philippines (76), Malaysia (51), Sri Lanka (59) and many more. It may have a
resemblance that our country is behind other neighboring countries in the field of education.
Not only in India had students worldwide faced various forms of academic stress. Many of
them commit suicide due to the failure of examination, depression anxiety and make their
lives riskier. It is quite common when it comes to board exams of 10th and 12th standard
where many incidents of students committing suicides occur. One side the parental pressure
and schools forcing the students to score marks in the board exams who go to the extreme
level. Cable connections, internet, games are being restricted for students to concentrate in
education which is often done by parents. They threaten the students to achieve better grades
for finding better educational institutions makes them more stressful. Especially students who
are studying in the science streams are more likely to be stressful due to higher competitions
in entrance examinations to enter college and universities.
In fact, India has one of the highest rate of suicides among people aged between 15
and 29.Two-third (66%) students reported that their parents pressurize them for better
academic performance, and the pressure from non-graduate parents was more compared to
parents those were graduates and post graduates. Everyday, 6.23 students commit suicide due
to the peer pressure, their must be something wrong that we are not understanding. More than
50% 12th students admitted of having more than 3 private tutors.

Emotionally students face various obstacles in academic institutions it differs from
each and every environment. Most of the academic institutions have co education but the
students do not have the space to speak with each other. Especially boys should not speak
with girls which is said to be a discipline in their institutions. This attracts parents where
many are ready to admit their girl child in these kinds of institutions. Even in their
classrooms, buses also girls have separate buses and sometimes there might be partition in for
boys and girls. They are not encouraged to involve in group discussion and participate in
classroom activity. These kinds of situations makes students stressful emotionally by creating
depression, anger, unwanted thoughts, lack of concentration, fear, agitation, etc. Out of 200

Conclusion and Recommendations
Stress among students can be solved by various practices, they need to pay attention
in their own well being. The right balance of sleep, food, exercise, work, recreation can easily
solve the problems of stress.
• Firstly, the education system is not helping to develop personality of students rather it
produces only academic qualification.
• Most of the students are not fully exposed outside world which does not develop personality.
Instead it builds stress and fear among students about their future and employment.
• Secondly, the medium of language of our education system is also a problem which has to be
yet addressed. Mostly there is no choice of what medium of our education system is
necessary. Now also English is emphasized in many academic institutions where majority of
students who come rural background and educated in mother tongue face the difficulty.
• Thirdly, the subjects which are thought in many academic institutions are not relevant to
employment. Fresh graduates who go out from academic institutions lack out from proper
communication skills which are much required for employment.

• Skills which are required by various organizations are not taught for students in academic
institutions. This makes them stressful that they are unemployed and cannot fulfill their
families’ livelihood. Many freshers do not get the right job as per their academic
qualification. Apart from this many academic institutions do not have proper infrastructure
for students where these institutions pressurize by collecting various capitation fees. These
kinds of fees and various forms of penalties make students stressful. Parental pressure not
allowing their children to choose their career and imposing their choice of choosing a
discipline should be avoided. Likewise the only way to treat stress is to buildup a strong
relationship with students, faculty members, parents and peer groups. This may lead the
students to interact their problems with their parents, faculty members and others.
