MTS/T-BERD 8000 upgrade procedure Version 6, May 23th 2007

There are different ways to install a new software release on the 8000 platform.
The new release shall be downloaded from the jdsu.com web site, extracted to the given media and
upgrade shall be processed as described below.

A. Upgrade using the USB key


1. Plug your USB memory stick into your 8000 test platform. Make sure that your unit is
switched off and not connected to any power supply first. Connect the power supply to the
8000 platform. Then switch on the unit with the “On” hard key.
2. Format the USB key with the 8000 platform (ensure you have at least 128MB memory
available).

o Press the “SYSTEM” hard key, then select successively “Expert tools” > “Media
utilities” > “USBflash format” and “Confirm” soft keys, in order to format the USB.
3. Once this USB stick is formatted, disconnect the USB stick from the 8000 and put it into
your PC.
4. Download and save on your PC the .exe upgrade file that you can get from the web
(www.jdsu.com).
5. Once the transfer is completed, double click on the .exe file. A window called "Winzip self
extractor", will appear. Check that the folder is correct i.e. the USB memory stick driver is
appearing "Name:\" then press “Unzip”. If not, click on ”Browse” in order to select the right
USB drive.

6. A message indicating the number of files that have been unzipped successfully will then
appear. Then press “Close”.
7. Then remove the USB memory stick using the appropriate procedure for your PC.
8. Plug your USB memory stick into your 8000 test platform. Make sure that your unit is
switched off and not connected to any power supply first. Connect the power supply to the
8000 platform. Then switch on the unit with the “On” hard key.
9. Press the "System" hard key, then press "Expert tools" soft key. Then press "Software
upgrade" soft key.
10. Press "Upgrade from USB" soft key. A message "Are you sure?" will then appear. Press
the "confirm" key.
11. Depending of the current 8000 version, 1 or 2 windows can then be displayed. In case 2
windows are displayed: On the left hand side, the current software versions of the unit and on
the right hand side, the new software versions about to be installed. If there are multiple
version screens, press “Show Next Choice” to select the right screen. Press “confirm this
choice” in order to upgrade a given version screen, or “Confirm All Choices” to upgrade all
versions.

13. Remove the USB stick as prompted
14. The 8000 shuts down
15. Reinsert the USB stick as required at the same USB port as previously (Repetitive bips
advise to insert the stick)
16. The upgrade continues (approximately 5 minutes). During this upgrade stage, do not
remove the USB stick. The 8000 platform restarts automatically at the completion of the
process and is ready to be used.

In order to verify that the unit has been effectively updated, press the “SYSTEM” hard key and go to
“Help” using the soft key. The new versions are now displayed on the top left window.
B. Upgrade using the hard disk of a PC and Ethernet connection
1. Connect the 8000 into mains with the AC plug, and switch on the unit with the “On” hard
key.
2. Connect the 8000 base unit to the PC via Ethernet. You can either use a cross-over Ethernet
cable for a direct connection, or use a standard straight cable using an Ethernet hub. Please
refer to the user manual for configuring the Ethernet connection.
3. Download and save on your PC the .exe upgrade file that you can get from the web
(www.jdsu.com).
4. Once the transfer is completed, and in order to perform the upgrade, the “.exe” file shall be
extracted under a root of the PC. So the files extracted from this .exe shall be placed under C:\,
or under a drive which can be created with the following process:
• Put the release under a directory, for example c:\upgrade\
• Open a DOS console, by selecting Windows "Start" (bottom right of the PC screen)
>All programs > accessories > command prompt.
• Then type the command subst N: C:\upgrade and close the DOS console. This
command will create a virtual drive N: (N: is an example).
5. Go to this driver using windows explorer.
6. Double click on the .exe file: A window called "Winzip self extractor", will appear. Check
that the folder is correct i.e. the C:\ drive or the newly created N:\ drive is appearing "Name:\"
then press “Unzip”. If not, click on ”Browse” in order to select the right drive.

7. A message indicating the number of files that have been unzipped successfully will then
appear. Then press “Close”.
8. Double click on the file “TFTPD32.exe”. Note the "Server Interfaces" address which
appears in the TFTPD32 window.
9. Double click on the file “FTP server.exe”. The window "Pablo's FTP server" is displayed.
Click on the green arrow (or select menu File > Start).

10. On the 8000 base unit, press the SYSTEM hard key, then press the “System Setup” soft
key.
11. Drop down the menu to Utility > Upgrade Parameters > Server Adress

12. Enter the IP address previously provided by FTFTD32.exe.


13. Press the Exit soft key in order to go back to the main SYSTEM menu
14. Press the “Expert Tools” soft key, then “Software Upgrade”> “Upgrade from Ethernet”
soft keys.
15. The message "Verify IP address of PC server" appears. Press “Continue”.
16. Depending of the current 8000 version, 1 or 2 windows can then be displayed. In case 2
windows are displayed: On the left hand side, the current software versions of the unit, and on
the right hand side, the new software versions about to be installed. If there are multiple
version screens, press “Show Next Choice” to select the right screen. Press “confirm this
choice” in order to upgrade a given version screen, or “Confirm All Choices” to upgrade all
versions.

17. The upgrade process starts (approximately 5 minutes). The 8000 shuts down during the
upgrade and restarts at the completion of the process. Your platform is ready to be used.

In order to verify that the unit has been effectively updated, press the “SYSTEM” hard key and go to
“Help” using the soft key. The new versions are now displayed on the top left window.
After the installation on the 8000 unit, on the PC, close the two opened windows.
C. Upgrade using a CD-ROM drive
The software upgrade can be performed via a CD-ROM provided by JDSU. There are 2 possibilities:
- Directly with an 8000 platform having a CD ROM driver.
- Using a PC with a CD ROM driver and connected to the 8000 platform via
Ethernet

Upgrade using the CD-ROM drive of the 8000 base unit


1. Connect the 8000 into mains with the AC plug, and switch on the unit with the “On” hard
key.
2. Insert into the drive of the 8000 base unit the CD-ROM where the upgrade files are.
3. Press the SYSTEM hard key.
4. Press the “Expert Tools” soft key, then Software Upgrade> Upgrade from CD.
5. Click on Confirm.

The system upgrade starts and the 8000 base unit is automatically rebooted.
The upgrade will then start (approximately 3 minutes). The 8000 will restart at the completion of the
upgrade. Your platform is ready to be used.
In order to verify that the unit has been effectively updated, switch on the unit, then press the
“SYSTEM” hard key and go to “Help” using the soft key. The new versions are now displayed on the
top left window.
Upgrade using the CD-ROM drive of a PC and Ethernet connection
1. Connect the 8000 into mains with the AC plug, and switch it on.
2. Connect the 8000 base unit to the PC via Ethernet. You can either use a cross-over Ethernet
cable for a direct connection, or use a standard straight cable using an Ethernet hub. Please
refer to the user manual for configuring the Ethernet connection.
3. Insert into the drive of the PC the CD-ROM where the upgrade files are.
4. Open the CD-ROM directory using Windows Explorer.
5. Double click on the file “TFTPD32.exe”. Note the "Server Interfaces" address which
appears in the TFTPD32 window.

6. Double click on the file “FTP server.exe”. The window "Pablo's FTP server" is displayed.
Click on the green arrow (or select menu File > Start).
7. On the 8000 base unit, press the SYSTEM hard key, then press the “System Setup” soft key.
8. Drop down to Utility > Upgrade Parameters > Server Address

9. Enter the IP address previously provided by FTFTD32.exe.


10. Press the Exit soft key in order to go back to the main SYSTEM menu
11. Press the “Expert Tools” soft key, then Software Upgrade> Upgrade from Ethernet.
