from two different households, you know the difficulties
this dilemma can present. Whether it’s a blended family, a new mar-

a bedroom as a bedside table or next to the old chair that doesn’t
seem to work in the family room either. Maybe the unusual bedroom

concerned how to repair the damage. In his case, he had Bermuda
grass in the front of his home and fescue grass in his backyard. This
is a very typical scenario for homes in our area. My explanation to
him first and foremost was to properly identify the problem; I sug-
gested sending a picture and/or a sample to the Georgia Coopera-
tive Extension.
In general though, the Bermuda grass, a warm season grass that
looks its best during the hottest times of the year, will see fewer issues
with Brown Patch than other types of grasses. Bermuda grass is our
toughest grass; however, when it is improperly fertilized brown patch
can quickly spread through a Bermuda lawn causing unsightly dead
areas. At this point, two applications of a turf fungicide should help
to keep the disease at bay.
As we move on to discussing the fescue grass, we must first under-
stand that unlike Bermuda grass, fescue grass is a cool season grass,
it looks its best during the cooler seasons of the year. The life cycle of
fescue realistically begins in September; this is the window of oppor-
tunity to repair the damage the intense summer sun has generated.
To begin with, in early September, aerate the lawn area heavily to
loosen the top several inches of soil. Aeration allows valuable oxygen
to penetrate the root system and then over seed with a quality tall fes-
cue seed and a starter fertilizer high in phosphorus (do not apply any
weed control at this time). Within a few weeks, the lawn will begin
to germinate. By November, the new seedlings should mature and
a weed control product can now be applied. With continued care,
fescue grass will keep looking good throughout the winter months
and will look fantastic in the spring. Unfortunately, fescue begins to
tire relentlessly by the end of June and will continue to decline in July
and August. It is at this time that the whole process begins again.
It is important to remember this process each year as Fescue grass
does not “run” and fill in as Bermuda does, aeration and seeding is
realistically the only way to keep your lawn thick and lush.
Social Security
By Paul D. Barnes, Social Security Regional Comm. in Atlanta
Social Security reaches almost every family in the United States,
and at some point touches the lives of nearly all Americans. It not
only helps older Americans, but also workers who become disabled
and families in which a spouse or parent dies. Today, about 159
million people work and pay Social Security taxes. More than 53
million people receive monthly Social Security benefits. In 2009
alone, those benefits came to about $675 billion. Both at the na-
tional and local level, Social Security makes a difference. The av-
erage payment for a retired individual is $1,169 a month, which
represents 40 percent of income for an average retired person.
The monthly payment for a disabled person averages $1,065. The
payments made to beneficiaries help individuals and families to
stay afloat. It’s clear that Social Security makes a difference on a
national, local, and individual level.

I’ve found these books to be great, but what about when we’ve
moved past simply asking and answering questions to the place where
an issue in our children’s lives needs discipline? First of all, what’s the
difference between punishment and discipline? Punishment focuses
on the past and what our children have done; discipline focuses on the
future and how they can grow. The word discipline comes from dis-
ciple. Jesus had his 12 disciples; they were His followers and He was
teaching and guiding them. Yes, our kids still need to experience the
consequences of their poor choices, but we want to make sure that we
are discipling their hearts in the process. We want to teach and guide
them so that they will make wiser choices in the future.
Ginger Plowman’s ‘Wise Words for Moms” is a booklet that can
be very useful in this process. It’s basically a chart that describes the
child’s behavior, such as complaining, making excuses, defiant atti-
tude, selfishness or lying. There is also a category for conflict resolu-
tion for both the offender and the offended. Each behavior is followed
with several heart probing questions to ask your kids to help you get to
the heart of the matter. Then there is a scripture verse for reproof (to
help “put off” wrong behavior) and one for encouragement (to help
