compassion and provide peace of mind to residents and families through knowledge and respect of
family member in this article. So, here goes: individual choices, while promoting optimum recovery for our residents.

The Responsible Party - It is a good idea to have one person des- We strive to provide resources for the total health and well being of all people in our care and

ignated to coordinate the care of an elderly person. In the commu-
nity setting, everyone in the family may help with errands, doctor’s
appointments and filling prescriptions, etc., but when a person en-
ters the nursing home, we rely on communication with one person.
Usually, depending upon the condition of the resident, that is the
person designated as the “Responsible Party”, hereafter referred to !"#$%

as “RP”. Upon admission to the nursing home, whoever assumes &'

medications, conditions, etc. and should be the point person for
relaying information to other family members. It is a good idea to
go over any doctor’s appointments or upcoming procedures with

the nursing home upon admission. Ask the nursing home how they
handle making appointments and what the procedure is for making
transportation arrangements.
The Attending Physician - In the community, there may be mul-
tiple physicians involved in the care of the family member. Different
physicians treat for different conditions and prescribe medications.
In the nursing home, we rely on one physician to approve all medi-
cations - the attending physician. The attending physician must ap-
prove any orders received from other physicians. Sometimes this
can cause a delay in getting medications “straightened out” in the
nursing home. It is a good idea to go over the orders for medica-
tions, diets, treatments, etc. with the nursing home upon admission
to identify and discuss any departures from the home regimen so
that they can be reconciled immediately.
Voice Expectations - Once admitted to the nursing home, it
should be the facility’s procedure to hold a meeting with the resi-
dent and the family to review the facility’s goals for the stay and to
briefly introduce different staff members. What I learned from our
employee is that we probably need to add a little bit to that meeting
and ask about the goals of the resident and families, as well as their
expectations for the stay. That conversation may open the door for
some valuable information that will contribute to peace of mind for
residents and family members.
Know Who to Talk To - Please do not be hesitant to communi-
cate and ask questions. Sometimes it can be hard to know who to
talk to about what. Ask upon admission who you should discuss
your concerns with if you have any. Get to know the charge nurses
and supervisors so that you will be comfortable asking questions
and/or voicing concerns. I encourage you to be an advocate for
your loved one. If you do not feel you are getting adequate infor-
mation or attention, speak with the administrator of the nursing
home.

Some dogs can tolerate heat better than other dogs and other
breeds. There’s not a perfect answer. Regardless, pet owners should
be aware of some signs that their dog is overheated. Never leave a dog
outside that doesn’t have an opportunity for shade all of the time. Dogs
or cats cannot take heat like they can the cold. Pets should never be left
unattended in a vehicle. Even if the window is cracked, temperatures
can be deadly.
Dogs should have access to plenty of water 100 percent of the time.

Dance Workx becomes Dance Fusion over 20 years in public health, fitness, and dance. Her daughter
Dance Workx of Villa Rica is now Dance Fusion. Anne Gilley began dancing at 18 months old and is now a professional
and Amy Johnson recently purchased Dance Workx. Anne is an ballerina. Anne’s dance background comes from years of being on
environmental scientist and exercise leader who has worked for the board of her daughter’s pre-professional company and working
in all aspects of the dance theater’s operations and performances.
Anne did not begin dancing and acting herself until she was an
adult—an opportunity she never had growing up on a farm with all
brothers. Amy is an accountant and was most recently the CFO for
a large development corporation. Her dance studio background
comes from taking dance into her teens as well as supporting her
daughters in their continued dance training and musical theater.
Her involvement along with her entire family in dance and acting
and her current tenure as treasurer of her local community theater
group where she is involved in all aspects of the theater’s operations
and performances have inspired her to want to do this kind of
work every day. In the last few years, Amy returned to dance after
a 20-year hiatus. Both Anne and Amy serve on the board of a
professional dance company in South Georgia, and continue their
own intensive dance training in all forms of dance.
Anne and Amy met and became instant friends in adult dance
classes upon discovering that they share a love of the arts. When
they realized how much they love dance and how happy it made
them, they wanted to bring the same opportunity to as many people
of all ages as they could - males and females. They currently own a
youth and adult dance and fitness studio North of Atlanta, and are
thrilled that the original owner of Dance Workx, who is relocating,
has passed the Dance Workx torch on to them. The studio will
remain in its current location next to O’Charley’s at 921 South
Carroll Road, Suite B. The same staff everyone has grown to know
(Apryl, Heather, Melissa, and Rebecca) will also carry on with
Dance Fusion. In addition to open classes for various age groups,
Dance Fusion will continue its competition focus and looks forward
to growing both programs. Anne, Amy, Apryl, Heather, Melissa,
and Rebecca are very excited to welcome everyone to Dance
Fusion. For more information about Dance Fusion, call 770-459-

DECORATING TIPS
Creative Combinations
Karen Hartley is a local interior designer and decorator. As
owner of Interiors by Decorating Den, she has been in busi-
ness for 23 years. She can be reached at 770-459-9096.
If you’ve ever had the task of combining furnishings
from two different households, you know the difficulties
this dilemma can present. Whether it’s a blended family, a new mar-
riage, or even new housemates, or just a new home, people often
bring with them a whole house of furnishings. Mixing all these often
diverse elements from two different styles of decor can be challeng-
ing. So here are a few tips to help you get started!
First, take a careful inventory of all pieces. Include not only the
large items, such as furniture, but also items such as area rugs,
lamps, pictures and even accessories that you may want to incorpo-
rate into your new decorating plan.
Once your list is complete, go through it carefully and check off
the items you definitely want to keep. Your final list may include
antiques, high quality furnishings, and items of sentimental value.
It could even include that comfortable old chair that you’ve enjoyed
many hours sitting in with a good book in hand. Now you can begin
to figure out where to use each piece. Just because it has always
been in the family room doesn’t mean that’s the only place it can
go! Think outside the box. Maybe that odd end table would work in
a bedroom as a bedside table or next to the old chair that doesn’t
seem to work in the family room either. Maybe the unusual bedroom

24 Villa Rica News & Views  Home & Garden

chest will be interesting in the foyer. Take away the assigned seats
and play with new arrangements.
So, what do you do if the items you wish to keep don’t blend
or match with your new homes’ existing décor? Take heart! The
eclectic look has been officially “in” for years now. Gone are the
days when every single piece of furniture has to match. The Dallas
Ewing clan of the 70’s and 80’s may have had a perfectly matched
“suite” in every room, but not the high tech families of today’s gen-
eration. Mix wood finishes, metals, even stone and glass surfaces.
And, if that comfortable, worn out chair can’t be parted with,
how why not consider reupholstering or refinishing it! Finishing
touches can do wonders to unite a mixture of furnishings. Look
for common elements in your pieces – perhaps a color or texture
that catches the eye. Sometimes even something as simple as a
decorative pillow in a patterned fabric that picks up colors from a
couple of blended pieces will help to unify the room.

I recently received a call from a local gentleman who commented
on my article last month and had lots of questions regarding his
own lawn and the effect a fungal infection had on it. His call mainly
concerned how to repair the damage. In his case, he had Bermuda
grass in the front of his home and fescue grass in his backyard. This
is a very typical scenario for homes in our area. My explanation to
him first and foremost was to properly identify the problem; I sug-
gested sending a picture and/or a sample to the Georgia Coopera-
tive Extension.
In general though, the Bermuda grass, a warm season grass that
looks its best during the hottest times of the year, will see fewer issues
with Brown Patch than other types of grasses. Bermuda grass is our
toughest grass; however, when it is improperly fertilized brown patch
can quickly spread through a Bermuda lawn causing unsightly dead
areas. At this point, two applications of a turf fungicide should help
to keep the disease at bay.
As we move on to discussing the fescue grass, we must first under-
stand that unlike Bermuda grass, fescue grass is a cool season grass,
it looks its best during the cooler seasons of the year. The life cycle of
fescue realistically begins in September; this is the window of oppor-
tunity to repair the damage the intense summer sun has generated.
To begin with, in early September, aerate the lawn area heavily to
loosen the top several inches of soil. Aeration allows valuable oxygen
to penetrate the root system and then over seed with a quality tall fes-
cue seed and a starter fertilizer high in phosphorus (do not apply any
weed control at this time). Within a few weeks, the lawn will begin
to germinate. By November, the new seedlings should mature and
a weed control product can now be applied. With continued care,
fescue grass will keep looking good throughout the winter months
and will look fantastic in the spring. Unfortunately, fescue begins to
tire relentlessly by the end of June and will continue to decline in July
and August. It is at this time that the whole process begins again.
It is important to remember this process each year as Fescue grass
does not “run” and fill in as Bermuda does, aeration and seeding is
realistically the only way to keep your lawn thick and lush.

Whether you’re approaching your golden years or
are experiencing them, it’s important to be aware of
how your healthcare options change at age 65. Many
believe that Medicare will pay for all of their expenses.
Unfortunately, it won’t.
There are several ways to help protect your assets. You may want
to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy (sometimes re-
ferred to as a “Medigap” policy) to help lower your out-of-pocket
expenses. It’s a policy specifically designed to fill some of the gaps in
your Medicare coverage.
Medical Supplement Insurance is strictly regulated by both fed-
eral and state governments and ten standardized plans are offered.
Some plans are not offered in every state. These plans pay most, if
not all Medicare coinsurance amounts.
Medicare supplement policies are labeled with the letters A though
J. Plan B provides additional benefits, and so on. Additional benefits
may include co-insurance for skilled nursing care, preventative care,
emergency treatment while traveling in a foreign country, doctor’s
charges over the approved Medicare amount, prescription medicine
or at-home recovery charges. Insurers choose which plans to market
unless a state dictates otherwise. A complete statement of coverage
can be found in the policy. You will need to choose which plan best
suits your needs and budget.
While the plan coverage offered by insurance companies is identi-
cal, no two insurance companies are alike. It’s important to take a
close look at the company’s financial stability and level of customer
service when making your decision.
Once you’ve purchased a policy, you’ll be pleased to know that as
long as you use a Medicare-approved physician, you may not need to
submit any additional paperwork to Medicare or your supplemental
insurance carrier. Be aware that neither Medicare nor a Medicare
Supplement Insurance policy will cover all costs associated with long
term care assistance if you’re no longer able to care for yourself. It’s
best to consult a professional to discuss your insurance and financial
needs.

Social Security
By Paul D. Barnes, Social Security Regional Comm. in Atlanta
Social Security reaches almost every family in the United States,
and at some point touches the lives of nearly all Americans. It not
only helps older Americans, but also workers who become disabled
and families in which a spouse or parent dies. Today, about 159
million people work and pay Social Security taxes. More than 53
million people receive monthly Social Security benefits. In 2009
alone, those benefits came to about $675 billion. Both at the na-
tional and local level, Social Security makes a difference. The av-
erage payment for a retired individual is $1,169 a month, which
represents 40 percent of income for an average retired person.
The monthly payment for a disabled person averages $1,065. The
payments made to beneficiaries help individuals and families to
stay afloat. It’s clear that Social Security makes a difference on a
national, local, and individual level.

I’ve found these books to be great, but what about when we’ve
moved past simply asking and answering questions to the place where
an issue in our children’s lives needs discipline? First of all, what’s the
difference between punishment and discipline? Punishment focuses
on the past and what our children have done; discipline focuses on the
future and how they can grow. The word discipline comes from dis-
ciple. Jesus had his 12 disciples; they were His followers and He was
teaching and guiding them. Yes, our kids still need to experience the
consequences of their poor choices, but we want to make sure that we
are discipling their hearts in the process. We want to teach and guide
them so that they will make wiser choices in the future.
Ginger Plowman’s ‘Wise Words for Moms” is a booklet that can
be very useful in this process. It’s basically a chart that describes the
child’s behavior, such as complaining, making excuses, defiant atti-
tude, selfishness or lying. There is also a category for conflict resolu-
tion for both the offender and the offended. Each behavior is followed
with several heart probing questions to ask your kids to help you get to
the heart of the matter. Then there is a scripture verse for reproof (to
