be setting them and ourselves up to fail. What happens when we ask
and they do not respond in the way we wanted? Usually we rephrase
and make it a directive or we discipline them for choosing the wrong
answer. This may be irritating to us, but to our children it’s very frustrat-
ing and can build up a lot of resentment towards us and our questions.
When we do ask questions, we need to match them to the age
and responsibility of the child. Asking a preschooler what they want
for lunch can be overwhelming for the child and difficult for the par-
ent. The child may pick items that are not appropriate for lunch (ice
cream), items that the parent isn’t willing to make at the moment
(homemade pizza) or items that aren’t available (he wants turkey, but
there’s none left). Limiting choices is the best idea. “Would you like a
peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch or would you like chicken
noodle soup?” Or you can give a choice for only part of the lunch.
“We’re going to have turkey sandwiches for lunch. Would you like an
apple or a banana with yours?”
With older children, we still need to limit choices, but we also need
to set any expected parameters when we ask a question. Recently, I
had a committee meeting to attend after my son’s scout meeting. I
asked him if he wanted to head home with dad or stay with me and
hang out with any other scouts who were also sticking around. I was
careful to explain that going home with dad meant some guy time be-
fore bed, but staying and playing meant he goes directly to bed when

Solution: Remember that everyone at the gym is there to focus
on his or her own body — they’re not there to compete. Let the gym

muscular, leaner, toned? Then formulate a strategy of exercise and
nutrition to achieve that goal. Begin your strategy by setting small,
realistic goals — a few pounds, 10 more minutes on the treadmill —
then go from there.

Socializing in Purpose
Last month I talked about the idea of living life on purpose.
Don’t just live life. Live life on purpose.
This month I want to talk about social-
izing on purpose. I enjoy golfing. I’m
not very good at it, but I enjoy it. In
fact, I always tell people, “If you want
to feel good about your golf game, just
invite me along!” Sports are a great
way that we can socialize and connect
with people. Lately my family has been playing a lot of Ultimate
Frisbee with friends and it’s been a blast!
Cookouts, football games, camping, fishing, game nights, din-
ners, bowling, hiking, etc. There is an endless list of ways that we
can socialize with other people. One thing I’ve realized, however, is
that it’s possible to socialize with other people and still not connect
with them in any real, meaningful way. We can choose to live life
on the surface level, and not engage others.
I know many of you reading this are longing for some deep
friendships. You desire to live life on purpose and connect with oth-
ers. So what’s stopping you? Invite someone over for dinner. Go
shopping, or play some sports with someone. Use your social times
as an opportunity to make new friends. The Bible states that “As
iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend” (Proverbs 27:17). In
essence, friends make friends better. God created all of us for com-
munity. I encourage you to use your social times more intentionally
and you’ll be amazed at what God does in your life. - Alan
