case we have to respect what the resident says is best, regardless
of what the doctor says, unless it is a case of endangering others.
Okay, you say – then the resident gets to determine what is best for
them, right? Well, yes – but think about the resident who desperate-

to death. For instance, the resident who can, by no safe means, eat
or drink by mouth because of the risk of aspiration. This resident
always wants a drink of water. It is VERY hard to deny someone a
drink of water; have you ever had to do that? What about trying
to take a bottle of contraband ginger ale away from a very wily 96
pound cute-as-a-bug white-haired elderly lady? But you know it’s
not safe and in fact, could be deadly. Should we allow these people
to drink water or ginger ale? Heck, yeah, you say. Wait – what if this
person seems pretty “with it” but in fact has dementia or Alzheim-
er’s Disease. Are we acting in this person’s best interest by allowing
them to participate in an unsafe activity? What do you think?
Everybody has an opinion. This is the very crux of the disagree-
ment about the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
“Five Star” rating systems for nursing homes. The criteria seems so
black and white – no way to argue, right? WRONG! I am a nursing
home administrator with nearly twenty years experience in long-
term care and even I don’t always fully understand how Quality
Indicators are determined. And even the ones I do fully understand,
I don’t always agree with or feel as though they represent “quality”.
One thing I can assure you though is if you go to visit any nurs-
ing home you are considering placing yourself or your loved one in,
you will be able to determine for yourself whether they offer quality
care. After all, you have a very important voice in saying what qual-
ity care consists of. And, if you find yourself without that voice due
to medical or end of life issues, I have faith that you have read this
column and have appointed someone you trust to be your voice by
way of an Advance Directive for Healthcare.

ions. Before attempting to home treat dry skin in dogs, it’s important
to rule out more serious causes of canine itching such as parasites,
fleas, bacterial infections, mites, and skin allergies. Once your dog
has a clean bill of health, you can start working with reducing his
symptoms and give him relief from his incessant scratching. Here are
some ways to relieve dry, itchy skin in dogs.
If you’re using a harsh shampoo on your dog’s skin, it may be
stripping the skin surface of essentials oils and aggravating your
dog’s dry skin. Choose an all natural dog shampoo with essential oils
formulated for dogs with sensitive skin. You can also purchase canine
conditioners that have added hydrocortisone to relieve severe itching
and reduce inflammation.
Nutrition can play an important role in eliminating dry, flaky skin in
a dog. Be sure that you’re feeding your dog a nutritionally balanced
diet. If you’re using commercial dog food, use a premium brand and
supplement with Omega-3 fatty acid supplements. Deficiency in es-
sential fatty acids can often present with dry, flaky skin in dogs. A
balanced diet and supplementation with high quality fatty acids can
often correct the problem of dry, itchy skin in dogs.

MONEY MANAGEMENT - GOD’S WAY

By Frank Boone. Frank is a United Methodist Min-
ister currently serving Wesley Chapel in Villa Rica. He
has worked in the banking industry for more than
sixteen years.
I invite you to join me on a journey to better money
management. My belief is since God created money
He is best qualified to teach us money management. Most people
are surprised to discover the Bible has so much to say about money.
Actually the Bible has over 2,300 teachings dealing with money.
So where should we begin? Many have heard the scripture quot-
ed: “the love of money is the root of all evil” 1Timothy 6:10. Money
is an important part of our lives today. It is often misused and can be-
come a source of evil. However money can also be used as a tool for
good. I remember early in my marriage money was a major source
of conflict. I came from a very poor family and by overhearing my
parents’ discussions and watching how they used money I learned
we never had enough. So l learned to save money. My wife on the
other hand was from a middle class family and understood the use
of money as a tool to be used. Not experiencing the pain of poverty,
saving was not so important for her. So every time she spent “my”
money I became fearful, which resulted in an argument. Yes, I had a
lot to learn about marriage and money. I pray in the coming months
you will join me as we discuss more about what the scriptures can
teach us about both.

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, your dining room a warm and welcoming place for company.
I wanted to give a little extra attention to the First, grab a few boxes or containers and gather all the items
one room of the house that, for some of us, is seldom used - the that have been allowed to collect here and either store them in
their proper homes or if you haven’t had time to organize and
create homes for them yet, just relocate them to some other
place. After the holidays are over, we will once again start working
on creating homes for everything you own. Don’t agonize over
this very long because you and I both know most of this “stuff”
hasn’t been looked at in several months (if not years).
Next dust and vacuum the walls, window treatments, and
furniture.
Let’s go to work on making this a welcoming part of your
home...it doesn’t matter if it needs new carpet, paint or even if the
furniture is a little “banged up”, if there is a sense of order and it
looks like the room has been cared for, everyone will feel welcome
and no one will notice those things.
Gather your best dishes. If they are mismatched that’s o.k, add
some napkins that pull all of the colors together and act like you
planned it that way.
Put a table cloth over the table (sheets work great for this) and
look around the house to find something that will make a nice
centerpiece. A basket of pretty apples will do fine, or gather a
group of candles.
Maybe one day you can afford matching china and the works
but for now create a solution with what you can afford.
Now it is time to plan the menu. If you have read my columns
in the past you already know that I don’t think you should stress
over the food (it has taken me a long time to come to this
conclusion ….so I can totally relate). For years I thought I had to
try every single recipe I knew every time I had guests and by the
time they arrived I was so stressed out I could hardly enjoy them.
Now, I pick one or two (at the most) items that I know I can do
really well and the rest of the items are things I can pick up at a
deli or make in advance with very little preparation.
Now that you have cleaned the dining room, planned the
menu and invited the guests, it is time to accept help. You can’t
do everything and you shouldn’t try. Set out your serving bowls in
advance and place a 3x5 card in each one stating what goes in.
This will make it easy for teenagers and/or hubby to help without
having to ask you for directions at the last minute.
