It’s cold and raw this morn-
ing. The roads are slick and

Spiraling Through Seasons
As the trees edging our
homestead stand shrouded in
heavy snow, I’m thinking
about the individuality of
each season.
Summer, which seems so
distant as the snow piles up,
is bright and vivacious, filled
with the energy of long day-
light hours and easy living

can overwhelm, challenging
one’s inner energy to keep up
with the bounty of nature.
The aliveness of the summer
world can be constant inspi-
ration.
Spring is like waking up
after a perfect night of deep
rest: stretching, blinking, re-
encountering one’s nook.
From hues of gray and
yellows, pinks, purples, and
more. The flush returns to
the earth’s skin. The pulse
of life begins to quicken.
Fall, by contrast, is a grand
exercise of the heart. If
spring is welcoming the new

Autumn is embracing all
that’s been created while
watching it fade away. Fall
is a meditator’s challenge -
love in loss, celebration in
goodbyes, acceptance of the
epilogue.
And winter...winter, a season
to see with fresh eyes the
beauty highlighted by
Beauty, simply, where it can
be seen without distraction
and in totality; a season to
recognize space and time,
and become familiar with
them once again. Winter
rests the body and resets the
spirit. Snow halts projects; it
emphasizes necessities while
eliminating excesses. It is
the ending and the beginning,
equally and interchangeably.
This is why I particularly like
winter. I am prone to plan-
ning and doing, and while
these inclinations can lead to
excitements and successes,
acting endlessly leans toward
growth risks becoming a lin-
ear rut. For me, winter slows
down the pace, spiraling me
around to reflection, uncov-
ering set-aside desires and
interests, and finding fresh
direction in the space of
slow, dark days. Winter on
the homestead becomes
about basics: food, water,
wood, warmth. There is less
work, more time. And in that
time, taproots of the spirit
and new buds of thought are
grown, nourished, and vener-
ated. It is the season for
inner life to bloom, preparing
for the new growth of anoth-
er spring cycle.

with 1/3 of the pointed end
exposed. Water the potting
mix thoroughly and place the
container in a cool sunny
location. Continue to water
thoroughly, but only often
enough to keep the soil bare-
ly moist.
Or go soilless. Place several
inches of pebbles in the bot-
tom of a glass vase or water-
tight container. Cover the
pebbles with water. Set the
bulb on top of the pebbles,
adding more stones around
the bulb to hold it in place.
Leave the top one third of the
bulb exposed. Add water as
needed to maintain the water
level just below the bulb.
Now relax and wait the
month or more needed for
your amaryllis bulb to wake
up and start growing. Water
more often once sprouts
appear.
Keep your floral display
looking its best by removing
spent flowers from azaleas,
Christmas cactus, cyclamen
and kalanchoes. This keeps
the plant looking fresh and
often encourages more
blooms. Remove the true
flowers, those yellow knobs
in the center of the colorful
leaves of the poinsettia. This
extends the longevity and
beauty of the poinsettia
plant.
And once the holidays are
past, keep enjoying these
plants through the gray days
of winter. Move the plants to
a sunny window, fertilize
with a dilute solution of com-
plete or flowering plant fer-
tilizer and water as needed.
Add some artificial berries,
cut flowers in water picks or
silk blooms to replace the
faded flowers. Use colorful
stakes or natural twigs for
added beauty and to support
floppy leaves and stems.
Be sure to add a few holiday
plants to this year’s gift list.

I once lived in a cottage
perched atop a sloping field
in Western Massachusetts. It
was the lone structure at the
edge of undeveloped forest
and sat far from the road.
The cottage had a large front
deck with an expansive view
and a smaller one in back
that faced the forest. It was
under the small deck that a
porcupine took up residence
one fall, for a stay that
turned out to be briefer than
I would have liked.
Since he wasn’t damaging
the house, and didn’t seem
aggressive, I didn’t mind his
presence. Until my dog,
Beckett, met him. Beckett, a
55-pound mixed breed,
could not learn the porcu-
pine lesson. He was always
certain that this time – this
time – he would be victori-
ous. Fed up with yanking
quills out of him or taking
him to the vet after especial-
ly bad encounters, I was des-
perate to figure out how to
share the space peaceably
with our resident rodent.
Which is what porcupines
are – rodents: the second
largest rodent in North
America, beavers being the
largest. They range in weight
from 12 to 35 pounds and
can grow to about 3 feet, tip
to tail. Porcupines are herbi-
vores, and with no need to
pursue prey their movement
tends to be ponderous.
(Surprisingly, however, they
are good swimmers). There
are 29 species world-wide,
but only one, the North
American porcupine
(Erethizon dorsatum),
resides in the United States.
While the porcupines in
Africa and Europe live in
large family groups, those
found in the Americas are
generally solitary.
What all the species have in

common, of course, are
quills. When porcupines are
born, the quills are soft, but
they harden within an hour
of birth. Some species, such
as the African crested porcu-
pine, which can weigh up to
66 pounds, have very long
quills and when threatened,
will turn around and charge
an attacker. The North
American variety does noth-
ing quite so brazen. Instead,
when attacked, they tuck
their noses between their
front legs and simply turn
around. If necessary they
will strike with their tails.
It’s generally an effective
defense, as the quills are eas-
ily released from the porcu-
pine and puncture the skin of
any predator that makes con-
tact. Quills lost during an
attack are regrown, and an
adult porcupine can sport up
to 30,000 of them.
North American porcupines
have a secret weapon not
found in Old World species:
at the end of each quill are
hundreds of tiny barbs.
Researchers have found that
barbed quills are four times
harder to extract than non-
barbed ones.
I can attest to just how hard
they are to remove, especial-
ly from the snout of an agi-
tated dog. To put an end to
Beckett’s fruitless and
painful pursuits, I started
watching the porcupine,
hoping to figure out his
schedule. It proved to be
quite predictable. Every
morning around 7, he would
waddle out from under the
deck and disappear into the
woods. He would return via
the same path around dusk.
Sometimes, before returning
to his digs, he would climb
the hemlock tree next to the
cottage to snack on the
branches.
Once the porcupine left for
“work,” I would wait a while
to make sure he was well out
of sight before I let Beckett
outside. They never had
another encounter, and we
settled into a harmonious
coexistence.
I didn’t regard the porcupine
as anything but a wild ani-
mal – it didn’t occur to me to
feed him or give him a nick-
name. He was always simply
“the porcupine.” But I loved
to watch him and had grown
attached to having him
around.
One day in the spring, I was
removing the hay bales I had
placed around the cottage’s
crawl space to keep out the
cold. As I pulled one away, I
was startled to find the por-
cupine lying with his back to
me. I put Beckett in the

house and went to work in
another part of the yard to
give him time to wake up
and get moving. After a
while it occurred to me he
wasn’t asleep. With a garden
rake and a lot of effort I was
able to pull his body out
from under the cottage. He
could not have been dead
long as there were no signs

toys made in other countries,
antique toys and toy jewelry,
may contain lead. We can
neither see nor smell lead.
Manufacturers use lead in
paints and pigments on some
toys. Lead can seriously
effect children, especially
those younger than 6 years
old. Exposure can cause your
child to be fussy and have
belly pain. Lead can also
cause hearing loss. Children
exposed to lead may have
learning problems and be
behind in developmental
milestones, such as sitting,
walking, and talking.
To reduce risks of coming in
contact with lead through
toys, the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) recalls toys that may
expose children to lead.

Here are CPSC’s safety tips
when buying toys:
Check the label: Follow age
and safety information on
packaging (they base age
grades on safety concerns
and on the developmental

dren under age three.
Be sure stuffed toys have
age-appropriate features
such as embroidered or
secured eyes and noses for
younger children and strong
seams that hold up for an
older child’s play.
Be careful with magnets:
High-powered magnet sets
are a safety risk to children –
toddler through teen.
Children can swallow loose
magnets, causing serious
k intestinal injuries.
Choose toys that match your

Designate a driver to ensure
guests make it home safely
after a holiday party; alcohol,
over-the-counter or illegal
drugs all cause impairment.
Make sure every person in
hooks toward the top.
Always use a step ladder;
don't stand on chairs or other
furniture.
Make sure wires and sockets
are in good shape; do not
overload your electrical cir-
cuits.
Keep any poisonous plants
(including some Poinsettias)
out of reach of children or
pets; you can reach the
national Poison Control
Center at (800) 222-1222.
Make sure paths are clear so
no one trips on wrapping
paper, decorations, toys, etc.
And during food prep:

fryers. The Consumer

reported 168 turkey-fryer
related fires, burns, explo-
sions or carbon monoxide
poisoning incidents since
2002. CPSC says these
injured 672 people and

It’s the time of year when the
landscape is laid bare, the
ground is impenetrable with
frost, and flying insects have
faded into memory. As fall
slides into winter, resident
songbirds like robins and
waxwings must switch from
their warm weather diets of
earthworms and arthropods
to the best of what’s left:
fruit, and lots of it. As it turns
out, this is also the time of
year when conditions
become ripe for the conver-
sion of fruit sugars into alco-
hol via natural fermentation.
Studies show that waxwings,
whose winter diet is com-
prised almost exclusively of
fruit, metabolize alcohol
seven times faster than finch-
es (seed eaters) and three
times faster than starlings
(omnivores). In addition, a
waxwing’s liver constitutes
nearly 5 percent of its total
body weight, compared to
just under 3 percent for star-
lings and finches. Larger liv-
ers and higher rates of alco-
hol metabolism likely
evolved in response to occa-
sional exposure to fermented
fruit. For the most part, these
adaptations enable waxwings
to dine on boozy berries
without ill effect.
There are, of course, excep-
tions. In 1989, a case report
in Avian Diseases described
several waxwings that had
suffered fatal falls from a
rooftop following ingestion
of overwintered hawthorn
berries. In 2012, a study pub-
lished in the Journal of
Ornithology reported on
necropsies of six different
flocks of waxwings that were
found dead after flying into
windows, fences, and other
stationary objects. Cause of
death: trauma sustained
while flying under the influ-
ence.
Puzzle Answers
Sadly, these are not isolated
incidents. Between 2003 and
2016, the USGS National
Wildlife Health Center
received more than two
dozen reports of fatal alcohol
poisoning or trauma result-
ing from impaired flying
among robins and waxwings,
with as many as 60 birds per-
ishing in any given event.
Late fall, winter, and early
spring are prime times for
avian intoxication, both
because seasonal conditions
are favorable for fermenta-
tion and because cold nights
cause birds to forage more
intensively. It’s also theo-
rized that birds tend to eat
more when feeding in flocks
than when dining solo, which
may explain why robins and
waxwings – who forage in
gregarious groups during the
winter months – are particu-
larly susceptible to having
one too many.
The good news is that, if pro-
vided with a safe space to
sober up, bombed birds can
survive to fly another day. In
2014, National Geographic
reported on a Canadian envi-
ronmental agency that turned
hamster cages into tempo-
rary “drunk tanks” for tipsy
waxwings. Most of the birds
recovered after a few hours.
Given the extreme vulnera-
bility imposed by inebria-
tion, it seems unlikely that
songbirds intentionally seek
out alcohol. But what about
other species?
Several years ago, a
Washington black bear made
headlines when it broke into
some campground coolers
and proceeded to down 36
cans of Rainier beer, pointed-
ly refusing the Busch beer
that was in the same coolers,
before passing out in a near-
by tree. When wildlife offi-
cials came to relocate the
bruin, they baited the trap
with two open cans of
Rainier. The bear walked
right in.

shrews drink the equivalent
of nine glasses a night. This
level of alcohol consumption
would be downright danger-
ous for other mammals,
including humans, yet the
shrews don’t show the slight-
est sign of impairment.
Scientists hypothesize that
the shrews developed a sym-
biotic relationship with the
palm approximately 55 mil-
lion years ago and have been
bingeing ever since, though
it’s unclear how they manage
to function with such chroni-
cally high blood alcohol con-
centrations.
So, as we enter the season of
brandied egg nog, cham-
pagne cocktails, and for the
wildest among us, fermented
fruit, keep your eye out for
wasted waxwings and reel-
ing robins. But if a pen-tailed
tree shrew challenges you to
a game of beer pong, it’s best
to politely decline. They’ll
drink you under the table
every time.

I am asked why we decorate
trees and are they not pagan.
Here is some history that I
was able to come up with.
The evergreen fir tree has
traditionally been used to
celebrate winter festivals
(pagan and Christian) for
thousands of years. Pagans
used branches of it to deco-
rate their homes during the
winter solstice, as it made
them think of the spring to
come. The Romans used Fir
Trees to decorate their tem-
ples at the festival of
Saturnalia. Christians use it
as a sign of everlasting life
with God.
Nobody is really sure when
Fir trees were first used as
Christmas trees. It probably
began about 1000 years ago
in Northern Europe. Many
early Christmas Trees seem
to have been hung upside
down from the ceiling using
chains (hung from chande-
liers/lighting hooks).
Other early Christmas Trees,
across many parts of north-
ern Europe, were cherry or
hawthorn plants (or a branch
of the plant) that were put

acted out in front of
Churches on Christmas Eve.
In early church calendars of
saints, 24th December was
Adam and Eve's day. The
Paradise Tree represented
the Garden of Eden. It was
often paraded around the
town before the play started,
as a way of advertising the
play. The plays told Bible
stories to people who could
not read. In closing I am
glad my pets decorate a tree
and put a lot of bulbs on the
bottom for me to play with. I
also wish they would put
that tinsel on the tree again,
I find it very tasty.

He was born in Newbury,
October 27, 1922, a son of

(Minshull) Hood.
Harley served with the U.S.
Army from January 1943 to
November 1945 during
World War II.
A lifelong resident of
Newbury he was a self
employed carpenter
installing aluminum siding,
and in later years was known
as "Tink The Oak Man"
because of refinishing old
furniture.
Tink loved hunting, fishing,

support to the troops and
their families, and also
accept donations from
Americans who want to help.
A few of those include:
Red Cross. The Red Cross
has a “Holidays for Heroes”
program that enables people
to “give something that
means something” during the
holiday season. The Red
Cross says it invites the pub-
lic “to join their local Red
Cross offices to thank and
recognize members of the
military, veterans and their
families through a variety of
activities.” Anyone interest-
ed in helping should check
with their local Red Cross
office to learn more.
USO. The USO delivers hol-
iday care packages during
various holidays throughout
the year. The USO reports
that since the program was
launched in 2011, it has dis-
tributed nearly 1,500 boxes
that brought holiday cheer to
more than 110,000 service
members in more than 500
locations.
Operation Gratitude. This
non-profit organization
sends individually addressed
care packages to troops serv-
ing overseas, veterans, mili-
tary families and others.
Each package contains
snacks, hygiene products,
entertainment, and hand-
made items, as well as per-
sonal letters of support.
