FORMATION EVALUATION ?

the cuttings?
DEFINITION OF FE
Formation Evaluation (FE) is the process of
interpreting a combination of measurements
taken inside a wellbore to detect and quantify
oil and gas reserves in the rock adjacent to the
well. FE data can be gathered with wireline
logging instruments or logging-while-drilling
tools. Data are organized and interpreted by
depth and represented on a graph called a log.
TWO KEY QUESTIONS IN FE
(1) What are the lower limits for porosity,
permeability and upper limits for water
saturation that permit profitable production
from a particular formation or pay zone; in
a particular geographic area; in a particular
economic climate?

(2) Do any of the formations in the well under

consideration exceed these lower limits?
Formation Evaluation (FE)
• Data Requirements
– Rock/formation properties (i.e., thickness, lithology, porosity,
permeability, pressure, etc.)
– Fluid properties (i.e., hydrocarbon and water, saturation, etc.)
– Flow potential
• Data While Drilling
– Drilling operations log (progress, mud, cuttings, etc.)
– Cores
– MWD or LWD
• After Drilling
– Open-hole well logs (before casing!)
– Cased-hole Logs
– Reservoir fluid samples
– Flow potential (drill stem test)
– Wireline formation test
FE Methods
 Drilling operation logs (mud
logging) – cuttings, mud, drilling
data, etc.
 Coring
 Productivity tests (WFT/RFT, DST)
 Wireline logging
What Is Petroleum Engineering?

Petroleum
Engineering, by
definition, is finding
crude oil and natural
gas in the ground
and devising a way
to bring it out of the
ground in a safe and
cost effective.
