INTRODUCTION

Filters are required to mitigate the harmonics introduced into the

system injected due to non linear loads and power electronic
converters
Xerox machine behaves as non linear load
With the use of filters higher order harmonics are attenuated

HARMONICS

Harmonics are mathematical term to identify the waves which differ

from pure sinusoidal
Any non sinusoidal component will have fundamental and higher
frequencies plus a dc term using fourier analysis
It is known that current flows in two directions. any power electronic
converter contains devices like diode thyristors etc.which block a
portion of flowing current which makes it non sinusoidal

Harmonic types

Due to non linear loads current harmonics are injected into the system
Inverters and power electronic converters inject voltage harmonics in
the system
When saying injects harmonics it may inject or drain current harmonic
from the system

TYPES OF FILTERS

Passive
Passive filters use simple energy storing elements with different
configuration
active
Active filters use energy storing elements with source and power
electronic devices

Potential uses of passive filters

Voltage Harmonics
Regulation of terminal voltage
To suppress voltage flicker
to attenuate switching harmonics
Smoothening of voltage waveform

Note: According to IEEE 1547 total harmonic distortion should be

less than 5 per.

Limitations of passive filters

Passive filters are not adaptable to varying system condition and

remain rigid once they are installed.
Size and tuned frequency can not be altered easily
Change of operating condition may result in detuning of filters and
may cause increased distortion.
These filters are affected by source inductance and can cause sub
synchronous resonance.
