Advanced Engineering Analysis

Driving your engineering from concept to production
Our advanced engineering team is able to provide a complete range of advanced analyses.

These include advanced FEM structure analysis, multi-body dynamic analysis, optimal systems analysis
including hydraulic, thermal and electrical systems, CFD analysis, and stability and design analysis for any
type of ship or offshore structure.

We use the most advanced software on the market, recognized by all the major marine Classification
Societies.

Over the years KNUD E. HANSEN A/S has attained a high level of expertise in the fields of stability
calculation and engineering. This has grown out of projects involving devising stability solutions, the
upgrading of existing vessels and research projects in co-operation with national authorities and the IMO.

Extensive experience and the use of state-of-the-art computer tools enable us to offer different types of
structural calculations and designs.

Using of the most advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) tools KNUD E. HANSEN A/S can resolve a
wide variety of issues including global and local structural analysis, linear and non-linear problems
applicable to steady-state and time dependent problems. Even irregular-shaped objects composed of a
number of different materials and having complex boundary conditions can be assessed.

We can help to discover problems and refine, improve and optimise a design before dependencies on other
components prohibit changes. The result is reduced design costs, thereby shortening the product
development time.
FEM is universally recognized as one of the most important technological breakthroughs in recent times the
field of engineering and today all the major Ship Classification Societies demand FEM calculations to
support the approval process for complex and novel designs.

Dynamic Simulation
KNUD E. HANSEN A/S has extensive experience in the study of the dynamics of moving parts, generating
insights into how loads and forces are distributed throughout mechanical systems, and dividing solutions
that will, improve and optimize the performance of a design.

With the use of the most advanced multibody dynamics and motion analysis software, models of
mechanical systems can be easily created and tested in a very short time.

The analysis incorporates real-world physics by simultaneously solving equations for kinematic, static,
quasi-static, and dynamic scenarios such as:
Static and dynamic structure analysis

Buckling analysis

Flexible body analysis

Natural vibration characteristics

Structure response to external loading factors

High velocity and impact analysis

Stress, strain, or life of components in a system model

Damage and failure analysis

Correctly modelling welded, and fastened assemblies, as well as jointed connections

3D contact simulation to account for complex assembly interactions

Complex mechanical assemblies that require a dynamic analysis

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)

CFD is a powerful engineering tool for simulating all types of fluid behaviour. It provides detailed
descriptions of fluid flow characteristics including values for velocities, pressures, temperatures, and other
variables.

CFD significantly reduces design and development time, provides more detailed information than physical
experiments, and quickly simulates a wide range of flow conditions. Different fluids can be modelled at the
same time (i.e. water and air), taking into account viscosity and turbulence (real flow conditions). Time
domain calculations (dynamic pressure loads, seakeeping analysis, slamming loads, etc.) can also be
performed.

Over the years KNUD E. HANSEN A/S has acquired outstanding level of CFD knowledge in marine
engineering and naval architecture through the provision of innovative design solutions and quality services
to transform engineering concepts into reality.

HVAC Marine & Offshore Solutions, Design & Consultancy
KNUD E. HANSEN A/S is a leader in the design and engineering of HVAC systems for
maritime & Offshore environments.

Our projects take us all over the world and cover offshore installations as well as
every type of vessel up to aircraft carriers and the largest cruise ships.
We handle HVAC assignments on new builds, refits and conversions and can offer support for every stage
of the design, build and installation process with services that include general consultancy and project
management as well as core design and engineering.

We work on projects of all sizes, either independently or in cooperation with third parties, and deliver a
service that meshes smoothly with the methods and procedures of each client.

HVAC ENERGY SAVING

In any HVAC system a range of actions can be taken both on new builds and existi ng vessels to maximise
efficiency.

Analysis of HVAC installations can be separated into two main areas: mechanical and automation. Review
of both of these areas will result in an energy optimised system.

Our latest project is expected to gain up to 25% efficiency with a payback period of less than 6 months.
We are independent of equipment manufacturers and suppliers, meaning that our solutions can be fully
customised to our clients' needs

Innovative Design
Fresh thinking for innovative solutions
The marine industry in general, and shipbuilding in particular, tend to be rather conservative businesses
and for good reason; the sea can be a dangerous place and proven solutions provide confidence and
predictability. However, with advances continually being made across all the technologies that underpin
the sector, being too conservative can also block vital innovation.

When developing new projects we start with a blank sheet of paper, considering all the possible
solutions. Existing designs and technologies are re-evaluated, but in parallel with that we also take a
completely fresh approach; evaluating new and emerging technologies and assessing their potential in the
context of each project. We also study existing systems and techniques to see if they can be applied in new
ways. Ultimately, our design teams consider every possibility however innovative or traditional, with the
objective of ensuring that the final proposal best fulfils the needs of the customer.
