Social constructivism highlights the importance of social interactions with the environment and

other people (Lynch, 2018). Students require and obtain information through their social world and
interactions, as students’ pick up social cues from the teacher that learner is gaining knowledge and
skills that he/she would not be able to obtain by themselves (Lynch, 2018).

Social world interactions support and build awareness around our culture and boarder society
(Lynch, 2018). Social constructivism has all evolved from our social context (Lynch, 2018). A social
constructivist classroom is all about the students taking control of their learning and through their
interactions of gaining knowledge (Macnish, 2019). A constructivist teacher is constantly assessing
the students and making them take ownership of their learning (Macnish, 2019). Asking them what
strategies they are using and applying for learning. Through a well mapped out classroom the
students will take ownership and they will build the confidence and awareness of how to learn
(Macnish, 2019). In the classroom the teacher applies real-word experiences and knowledge and
brings it in the classroom, to help the students learn through a social context.

Students will learn and take in knowledge about the world around them through experiencing and
then reflecting on that knowledge. Social constructivism takes on several attributes of active,
constructive, authentic, cooperative, intentional (Macnish, 2019). My lessons display’s several
attributes it is constructive, students’ have to use their prior-knowledge of the literature to do story
re-tell, making puppets, story sequencing and when students’ have to recreate a version of the 3
little pigs and once obtained all this knowledge is reflected upon.

The lesson plans are cooperative in nature, students have to use their social manner to interact and
make meaning to certain concepts to add a greater depth of their knowledge. In certain rotations in
my lessons they are adult free which means students will need to use their social understanding to
interact with others if they need a better understanding of a certain concept, or to share materials
i.e paint and colouring pencils.

My lessons are authentic, in that the learning taking place is all situated around a real-world context,
an example from my lesson would be, students have to use their knowledge of the world to decide
which house from the literature the 3 little pigs, were best designed and why. Students have to use
their real-world understanding and knowledge of houses to decide which house was best designed
and why.
