Year Level: KINDERGARTEN Date: Term 2, week 7 Students’ Prior Knowledge:


Monday and Tuesday
Most students are able to verbally count from 0-10 with
Learning Area: Mathematics & Arts and Crafts some students being able to count beyond. The
students are also able to visually identify the numbers
0-10 in the form of magnet whiteboard pieces as well
as number cards.

Lesson Objectives
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Students will be able to visually identify the Number 14 and respectively count to 14 using visual aids.

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for Students:

LESSON DELIVERY Resources/References


Time
8:30am Motivation and Lesson Introduction:
1. The students enter the classroom and place their library books in the
basket located at the front of the classroom.

2. The students are then required to locate their name set up on the
three desks. Name Sheets
The students are to place the letters of their name in order, trace the
pre-written name provided and then write their name by themselves Permanent Markers
on the line provided at the bottom of the laminated sheet.
Once the students have completed this, they are able to free play in Whiteboard Erasers
the available play centres around the classroom until the day begins.
Bells
During the above activities, the educator must walk around and praise the
students to increase their self confidence levels as well as providing support Good Morning Song
where needed. This is extremely important if their parents have departed.
Number Magnets
3. The educator will then ring the bells to signal to the students to
transition to the mat to begin the day. Number of the Week

4. Good Morning introductions are complete as well as the timetable for
the day (located at the top of the whiteboard for the students). Discussions

6. After this is explained the educator will explain the activities taking
place throughout the duration of the day.
The educator must make ensure that they explain to the students that
they will be making a cookie jar that has 14 cookies inside to share
with all of your friends.
The educator may wish to use the prompts of “Why have I chosen 14
cookies?”

7. Two students are selected for the table top letter craft activity and the
rest of the students are free to play in the other learning centres
around the classroom until their name has been called.

During the mat session, if the students become off topic or distracted, the
educator is to implement the behaviour management strategy of “are your
eyes watching (pointing to eyes), are your ears listening (pointing to ears), are
you voices quiet and are your bodies still.

Lesson Development:
Table Top Activity
o The students are asked in groups of 2 whilst the other students are
free playing in the available play centres around the classroom. Cookie Jar Template

Discussions
1. “Today, we are going to be making a cookie jar”!
The educator can extend the students knowledge and thinking Anecdotal Notes

2. The educator will provide the students with a cookie jar template. The Lead Pencil for Name
students are instructed to write their name on the bottom of their Writing
sheet.

3. The educator will then instruct the students to draw 14 cookies on Textas
their jar using a black marker.
Crayons
4. Before the students colour their cookies with the available writing
materials, they will be asked to count them in order for the educator to Black Marker
gather an understanding of which students have grasped the concept
of one to one counting.
The educator must allow time for the students to self correct and
guidance may be provided after this step.

5. After the students have completed the above step and have 14
cookies, they may wish to colour in their cookies using the available
writing materials.

6. Once the students have completed their work, it will then be placed
10:30am on the drying rack to dry.

As recess takes place at 10:30pm if some students have not completed the
activity they will do so after recess or in the next session on another day.

It is important for the educator to praise the students as they are completing
their work to increase their self confidence.

Lesson Closure:
At the closure of the table top activity, invite the students to share their
developmental thoughts on the process of creating their cookie jar through
scaffolding questioning (anecdotal notes will be taken in regards to this). Discussions
How many cookies are in your cookie jar? Can you count them for me?
The closure of the lesson is completed when the students have completed the Questioning
activity as the classroom is very play based.

Assessment:
The students are observed during their play activity and this is recorded in the
form of anecdotal notes.
The anecdotal notes are recorded in terms of their enjoyment, what they take Anecdotal Notes
from the activity through their discussions and whether or not the students are
able to count correctly to 14 as well as verbally explain it.
Work Samples will also be taken.
