UNIT 1: Day 1

1. Answer the following questions in your scripture study journal:

a. From your understanding, how were we different from our Heavenly Father in the pre-
earth life?
- Before we were born, we lived with God in heaven as spirits and Heavenly Father had a
physical body.
b. What did Heavenly Father present to us and put in place to help us become like Him?
- Heavenly Father presented the Plan of Salvation to help us become like Him.
2. Our Heavenly Father’s plan requires us to leave His presence and experience life on
earth. Our life on earth is often called mortality. Ponder for a moment why we needed to
leave God’s presence and how mortality helps us grow and become more like our
Heavenly Father. Write your thoughts in your scripture study journal.
- We are here to experience having a physical body, make choices and distinguish right from
wrong. We gain happiness and become more like our Heavenly Father when we make good
choices.
3. According to Doctrine and Covenants 18:22–23; 25:13, 15, what must we do to come
unto Jesus Christ and receive the blessings of His atoning sacrifice? Write your answer
in your scripture study journal.
- We must repent, be baptized in His name, endure to the end, cleave unto the covenants, and
Keep His commandments continually.
4. Answer the following questions in your scripture study journal:
a. Why is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ good news for everyone?
- Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all people will be resurrected and saved from physical
death and be in our perfect form.
b. How does the hope of the Resurrection bring you joy?
- Because it lets me know that there is life after physical death and that after resurrection we will
all be perfect.
5. In your scripture study journal, summarize what you have learned about Heavenly
Father’s plan for our happiness. Find a time to teach what you have learned about
Heavenly Father’s plan for our salvation to a family member or friend face to face. You
might draw the accompanying diagram as you explain it. Be prepared to share your
experience with your teacher.
- We lived with Heavenly Father before we came to earth. We are His spirit children and He
wants us to have the same joy that He has by becoming like Him. In order to become like God,
we must have a resurrected, glorified physical body and we must grow to possess the qualities
of godhood.
6. Write the following at the bottom of today’s assignments in your scripture study
journal:
- I have studied “The Plan of Salvation” lesson and completed it on 7/9/2018

UNIT 1: Day 2

Church. As you discover the various elements during this lesson, list them under this
heading.
- The Apostles, the prophets, and Jesus Christ forms the foundation of the Church of Jesus
Christ.
2. Choose one of the Basic Doctrines above. In your scripture study journal, write an
explanation of why that doctrine is meaningful to you.
- Plan of Salvation, the plan of salvation gives me hope and purpose as I wrestle with the
challenges of life. I find reassurance in the knowledge that I’m are a child of God and that I lived
in His presence before I was born on the earth. I can find meaning in my present life, knowing
that my actions during mortality influence my eternal destiny.
3. Why do you think these threats were so dangerous to the Church? Write your thoughts
in your scripture study journal.
- Because these threats leads people away from God and promotes that being bad is good.
4. In your scripture study journal, write answers to the following questions:
a. How would the loss of priesthood authority affect the other essential elements of the
Church?
- The loss of priesthood authority will affect the other essential elements of the Church because
without the priesthood power there will be no authority to do all of the Ordinances.
b. Why was there no way to repair the Church without the prophets and apostles,
priesthood authority, and correct knowledge of Jesus Christ’s doctrine?
- Because with out priesthood or the authority given by God we do not have the authority to
repair the Church.
5. Answer the following question in your scripture study journal: Why do you think it is
important to understand the Great Apostasy and its consequences?
- Because without the Priesthood there will be no proper authority to lead and repair the church
thus leading people to wander off or stray of the path of God.
6. Explain to a family member or friend (in person) the essential elements of the Church
of Jesus Christ and how they were lost from the early Church. Explain why it is important
to understand the Great Apostasy. In your scripture study journal, write how your
conversation went and how your family member or friend responded.
- My parent listened about why it is important to understand the Great Apostasy and then added
some insights to it.

UNIT 1: Day 3
1. In your scripture study journal, explain why you think it would be important to warn
people that sins committed in secret will be made known.
- Because it will make them not want to keep secrets and do sins. Its important so they know
that all will be judged by their actions.
2. Answer the following question in your scripture study journal: What do you think the
Lord’s warning that those who do not give heed to His prophets “shall be cut off from
among the people” (D&C 1:14) means?
- They will be separated from the people that heeded the prophet’s warning.
3. Read Doctrine and Covenants 1:15–16. In your scripture study journal, list some of the
words or phrases that describe the wickedness or apostasy the Lord said would exist in
the last days. Then answer the following question: In what ways do people in our day
walk “in [their] own way, and after the image of [their] own god”?
- “For they have strayed from mine ordinances and have broken mine everlasting covenant;
They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness.” They fear people than God and stray
from God’s path. They seek pleasure and worldly things.
4. Answer the following question in your scripture study journal: Recalling what you
learned in the previous lesson about the Great Apostasy, how would you explain to
someone why The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true and living
church upon the earth?
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true and living church upon the earth
because it has the Priesthood Authority, Priesthood is the power and authority that God gave us
to perform ordinances and to lead the Church of Jesus Christ.
5. Answer one or both of the following questions in your scripture study journal:
a. Why is it important to you to know that you belong to the only true and living church
upon the earth?
- By knowing of it I know that I’m part of God’s Church and that being a part of it and following
the church will make me worthy and prepared to meet Heavenly Father again.
b. What do you think it means in Doctrine and Covenants 1:30 when the Lord stated He
was pleased with His Church “collectively and not individually”?
- Because of how we as a collective have great things and laid the foundation of the church.
6. Based on what you have learned today, how can you be blessed if you search the
commandments and revelations the Lord has given in the Doctrine and Covenants?
Write your thoughts in your scripture study journal.
- Because by searching the commandments and revelations the Lord has given in the Doctrine
and Covenants God will bless us. By following the commandments and heeding the revelations
we will be strengthened and blessed.
7. In your scripture study journal, write a goal to study the Doctrine and Covenants daily
during the school year. As part of your goal, consider when, where, and for how long or
how many pages you will study each day.
- I will study and ponder about the Doctrine and Covenants and read 2 pages a day then if I
have extra free time I will read as much as I can. I will also apply the things that I learn.
8. Write the following at the bottom of today’s assignments in your scripture study
journal:
- I have studied Doctrine and Covenants 1 and completed this lesson on 7/11/2018

UNIT 1: Day 4
1. In your scripture study journal, write down what you hope to gain when you study your
scriptures.
- It will strengthen me, guide me through my daily life and bless me and the people who are
around me.
2. Write in your scripture study journal a doctrine or principle you have learned by
studying the scriptures.
- Godhead, Plan of Salvation, Atonement of Jesus Christ, Dispensation, Apostasy, and
Restoration, Prophets and Revelation, Priesthood and Priesthood Keys and many more.
3. To see how knowing the historical setting can increase your understanding of a
revelation, read the section introduction to Doctrine and Covenants 121 and verses 1–8.
In your scripture study journal, describe how knowing that the Prophet Joseph Smith
had been imprisoned in Liberty Jail for several months adds meaning to his prayer and
the Lord’s answer in these verses.
- Because even if he is being persecuted he still prays and cares for the people that persecuted
him. This emphasized and added context to Joseph Smith’s prayer and how the Lord answered.
4. In your scripture study journal, explain how Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 helps you
understand the meaning of Doctrine and Covenants 10:55 and 10:67. You may want to
write D&C 10:67; 20:37 in the margin by Doctrine and Covenants 10:55 as cross-
references.
- Because in D&C 20:27 it explains the meaning and expands the meaning of Doctrine and
Covenants 10:55 and 10:67.
5. Practice identifying doctrines and principles by reviewing Doctrine and Covenants
121:1–8 and asking yourself some of the preceding questions. In your scripture study
journal, write one or two truths you learn from the Prophet Joseph Smith’s prayer and
the Lord’s answer to that prayer.
- “O Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven, earth, and seas, and of all things that in them are,
and who controllest and subjectest the devil”
“God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes”.
6. Think of an example of a gospel truth that you have learned from the scriptures and
how it blessed your life when you applied it. Record your experience in your scripture
study journal.
- By being humble and meek, I’m blessed by our God and because of being meek and humble I
find myself not having enemies and conflict around me.
7. Write the following at the bottom of today’s assignments in your scripture study
journal:
- I have studied the “Studying the Scriptures” lesson and completed it on 7/11/2018.
