Released Top Drive Drilling System
Date: March 21, 2003
Affected
Assemblies: PH-85 Pipe Handlers Using Upper IBOP Quick Change Systems (P/N 127700)
The system is comprised of the Rotary Table Back-Up Structure (RTBS) and the RTBS
Intensifier Assembly. The RTBS has a base that pins into the rotary table, while the other end
engages with the Upper IBOP valve. The RTBS Intensifier Assembly mounts on the backside
of the Torque Wrench and provides increased pressure to allow the pipe handler to break out
the Upper IBOP.
The current procedure requires the Link Tilt Assembly to be extended to the mousehole
position and for the operator to swing the PH-85 Torque Wrench back to allow the RTBS
access to the Upper IBOP. When using the Upper IBOP Quick Change System, interference
may occur between the top of the PH-85 Pipe Handler torque tube and the bottom of the
Upper IBOP valve.
Note: If an interference problem exists, it will be observed the first time the Upper
IBOP Quick Change System is used.

1. Swing out PH 85 Torque Wrench to clear the Upper IBOP splines, as shown in Figure 1.
2. If interference between the top of PH-85 torque tube and the bottom of Upper IBOP
splines occurs when swinging the Torque Wrench, then installa tion of shims is required
under the lift cylinder mounting bracket, as shown in Detail A of Figure 1.
Caution: Before removing four fasteners from lift cylinder mounting bracket to add
shims, PH-85 torque wrench must be supported at the bottom using its
stabbing guide.
4. After supporting the torque wrench remove the four fasteners from the lift cylinder
mounting bracket.
5. Add shims, determined in Step 3, under bracket and reinstall four fasteners.
Note: Do not add more shims than necessary as the addition of shims reduces the amount of
spline engagement between the Upper IBOP and torque tube, ultimately affecting
torquing capability.
Please contact your local Varco Service Center to order shim kits or if you have any questions
regarding this product bulletin.
