PAVEMENT RECYCLING

INTRODUCTION

Pavement recycling is reconstruct the road with the new pavement depend on the situation
and damage. Pavement recycling is carried because we want to add the period of time to the
road so that people can used the road with the long lasting and smooth.

Pavement recycling also prevent users of the road from any accident and give more safety
level to the user. People will more confortable when the road pavement is clean, smooth and
flat.

PURPOSE

The purpose of pavement maintenance is to extend the life of the road's foundation and to
keep it looking and riding in good condition. The purpose of these road maintenance functions
is to stop water from entering the roadway, which causes premature breakup of the road
surface. The useful life of roads can be extended from 20 to 50 years if, on a regularly
scheduled basis, small breaks are fixed and a seal coat or resurfacing is completed before
severe damage occurs. There are several strategies or types of pavement maintenance to
perform:

1) Micro-sealing involves the application of crushed gravel over emulsified asphaltic oil. The
oil seals the pavement from water penetration while the gravel provides a wearing surface to
protect the oil seal from traffic.

2) Slurry sealing includes a mixture of fine sand with emulsified asphaltic oil. Slurry sealing
is usually done on streets with higher traffic volumes and speeds because it provides a
smoother ride and avoids the problems associated with flying gravel caused by higher speed
traffic.

3) Mill and overlay, is the removal and then re-application of two to four inches of asphalt
over existing pavement to provide a smooth surface for drivers and, more importantly, to add
strength to the road.
METHOD OF PAVEMENT MAITAINENCE

Pavement maintenance is the key to pavement system preservation. An effective pavement

system preservation program integrates many maintenance strategies and treatments. There
are three types of pavement maintenance:

1. Preventive Maintenance: Planned strategy of cost-effective treatments to an existing

Pavement system and its accessories that preserves the system, retards future
deterioration, and maintains or improves the functional condition of the system.
2. Corrective Maintenance: Performed after a deficiency occurs in the pavement
system, such as moderate to severe heaving, ravelingbor extensive cracking. This may
also be referred to as “reactive” maintenance.
3. Emergency Maintenance: Performed during an emergency situation, such as a severe
pothole or trip hazard that needs repair immediately. This could also include
temporary treatments that hold the surface together until a more permanent treatment
can be performed.
There are no clear boundaries between when a treatment is preventive versus corrective, or
corrective versus emergency. All types of maintenance are needed in a complete pavement
system preservation program. However, emphasizing preventive maintenance may prevent or
prolong the need for corrective maintenance.
ADVANTAGE OF PAVEMENT RECYCLING

Recycling or reuse of pavement material is a very simple but powerful concept. Recycling of
existing pavement materials to produce new pavement materials results in considerable
savings of material, money, and energy. At the same time, recycling of existing material also
helps to solve disposal problems. Because of the reuse of existing material, pavement
geometrics and thickness can also be maintained during construction. In some cases, traffic
disruption is less than that for other rehabilitation techniques. The specific benefits of
recycling can be summarized as follows:

1. Reduced costs of construction.

2. Conservation of aggregate and binders.
3. Preservation of the existing pavement geometrics.
4. Preservation of the environment.
5. Conservation of energy.
6. Less user delay.
HOW TO SELECT RIGHT METHOD OF RECYCLING PAVEMENT

Pavement recycling is performed depending on the road pavement before. To select the right
method of recycling normally based on pavement damaged. Different damage of pavement
will used different ways to reconstruct, so from the damage we will know the right method to
use.

Beside that recycling pavement is depend on situation of road, with mean the total or average
vechicle and maximum load will through on road pavement. From that we will analys and
choose the right method.

Weather is also the main element to take before recycling pavement, this is because weather
will influance the period of road. Some of country get the different weather for example hot
and cool. So this situation will give the different method.

Some of contractor will focus about the budget, budget will effect our recycling pavement but
it depend on the situation. Some of the method of pavement recycling used a lot of money to
construct and some of that use less of budget. Normally the best and good recyling pavement
method use a lot of budget but it will promises the long period time.
