This text will explain how effective cricital literacy practices in EFL (English as a
Foreign Language) classroom. Before that we should know the definition about Cricital
Literacy is. According to Jank defines cricital literacy is care with students to understand and
run the rellation between language and strength (2010). on the other hand Luke have different
oppinion, he explain clricital literacy in more complex manner as “the use of the technologies
of print and other media of communication to analyze, critique, and transform the norms, rule
systems, and ractices governing the social fields of institutions and everyday life”(2014).
From that definition we can conclude in EFL class the teacher should work as
signpost to help student know the world around them through cricial practice. In the EFL
class the teacher must empower students to exert their own power to change social order,
teachers should integrate these competences instead of isolate them through implementation.
However, most EFL pedagogical practice still focuses on deciphering meanings from
linguistic perspectives.to find out hof effective this practice, the teacher create some examine
by paper-test and interviewed by questionnaires in the end of the selected semester to the
student. This experiment was conducted at a school in China intended to fill the gap to
integrate CLP (Cricital Literacy Practice) into Chinese EFL reading settings.
Teaching procedures in this EFL class are, Teacher adopts CLT (Communicative
Language Teaching) method in reading classes. There is a theme in each unit. Teacher carries
out led-in activities to introduce topic to students. Then teacher asks students to read in-class
reading passages to summarize the main idea of the passage, discuss topic sentences in
paragraphs, explain vocabulary knowledge to students and make students complete exercises
in the textbooks.During 18 academic weeks, teacher works step by steps to help students to
strengthen their critical awareness, make a habit of interrogating assumptions in the texts,
grasp critical reading strategies, and motivate their learning interests.
In the end of the semester, subjects from controlled class participate in paper-test,
which is made up of five passages, three from IELTS, one from the “Reader’s Choice”, and
the other from ‘The Economist’ magazine. Subjects are required to complete 61 questions
and a composition writing within given time. Questions aims to investigate the frequency of
adopting CLP in reading, the benefits CLP makes, the difficulty of adopting CLP, the
relevance with cultural background and changes CLP makes. As the result only one-third
subjects make changes since they participate into CLP concerning learning habit and
efficiency, ways of thinking, and ideologies.
