 Definitions of Risk
- Traditional Definition of Risk: Uncertainty concerning the occurrence of a
loss
- In the insurance industry, risk is also used to identify the property or life
that is being considered for insurance
- In economics and finance:
o The term risk is used in situations where the probabilities of possible
outcomes are known

Uncertainty is used in situations where such probabilities

cannot be estimated

‫‪Loss Exposure: Any situation or circumstance in which a loss is possible,‬‬

‫هنا بقي يقصد بيها ان اي موقف انا هتعرض ليه في احتمال اني اخسر‬
‫بغض النظر بقي عن نسبه او احتماليه اني الخساره دي تحصل‪.‬‬

‫‪Objective risk is defined as the relative variation of actual loss from‬‬

‫‪It can be statistically calculated by some measure of dispersion, such as‬‬

‫‪Subjective (perceived) risk is defined as uncertainty based on a person’s‬‬

‫فعال ال ‪ actual‬بتاعي انا خسرت ‪ 01‬الف بس فهو يقصد ان هي ال‪ variation‬او‬
‫االختالف اللي بيبقي مابين ال ‪ expected‬و ال ‪actual‬‬
‫طب النوع التاني بقي ال ‪subjective risk‬‬
‫بتبقي ال‪ uncertainty‬معتمده او علي اساس كل شخص و دماغه بمعني‬
‫اتنين ماشين في الشارع بيعدوا الطريق و عربيه جايه بسرعه و هتخبطهم‬
‫ممكن تالقي واحد من الصدمه معرفش يتصرف و فضل واقف مكانه و التاني‬
‫جري بسرعه من قدام العربيه و عرف يتصرف ( و اه ساب صاحبه بالش اسئله‬

Chance of loss: The probability that an event will occur
‫ احتماله او فرصه ان الخطر ده يحصل اصال‬chance of loss ‫يعني ايه بقي ال‬
‫فرصه ان العربيه تخبطك دي الحدث نفسه يحصل وال ال‬
Chance of Loss vs. Objective Risk
• Chance of loss is the probability that an event that causes a loss will occur.
• Objective risk is the relative variation of actual loss from expected loss
The chance of loss may be identical for two different groups, but
objective risk may be quite different!

 Peril and Hazard

- A peril is defined as the cause of the loss.
o Examples include property damage because of fire, windstorm, or
lightening, or damage to your car because of a collision with another
vehicle.

- A hazard is a condition that increases the chance of loss

‫ بقي يقصد بيها ان في حاجات بتزود فرصتك في الخساره اللي‬hazard ‫ال‬

o A physical hazard is a physical condition that increases the frequency
or severity of loss

‫حاجه ملموسه باينه من اسمها طب يعني ايه ؟ انت عملت حادثه بالعربيه‬
‫مثال عشان الفرامل مكنتش مربوطه كويس او الجو كان وحش و الدنيا مطره‬
‫و الطريق كان فيه ميا فمعرفش تسوق و عملت حادثه يقصد بيها حاجه تقدر‬
‫تشوفها و هتعرف الفرق تحت‬

o Moral hazard is dishonesty or character defects in an individual that

increase the frequency or severity of loss

‫عندك مشكله في اخالقك هي السبب في الخساره دي زي ال‬

‫ حاجه مش ملموسه وال تقدر تشوفها‬dishonesty

o Attitudinal Hazard (Morale Hazard) is carelessness or indifference to

a loss, which increases the frequency or severity of a loss

‫دي يقصد بيها بسبب تصرفك انت حصلت الخساره زي مثال مكتوب علي‬
‫يافطه ممنوع انك تركن هنا بس انت رحت ركنت تحت اليافطه بقي فالعربيه‬

‫استغبت وال ايه مكنتش عارفه ان القهوه سخنه لدرجه كبيره المهم القهوه‬
‫وقعت عليها وهي بتسوق و رفعت قضيه علي المكان ده عشان منبهوش ان‬
‫القهوه كانت سخنه للدرجه دي وكسبت القضيه و خدت تعويض كبير‬
‫يبقي السيستم نفسه كان فيه حاجه غلط هو اللي سببلهم الخساره و‬
‫دفعتهم التعويض الكبير ده‬
‫‪ Classification of Risk‬‬
‫‪A. Pure Risk and Speculative Risk‬‬
‫‪o A pure risk is a situation in which there are only the possibilities of‬‬
‫)‪loss or no loss (earthquake‬‬

‫ال‪pure risk‬دي يقصد بيها ان انت في موقف يا هتخسر يا مش هتخسر‬

‫مش هينفع تطلع كسبان منه يعني ايه؟ الزلزال مثال يا المباني هتقع علي‬
‫اللي فيها يا مش هتقع صح لكن هتكسب منه حاجه؟ ال بلح‬

‫‪o A speculative risk is a situation in which either profit or loss is‬‬

‫)‪possible (gambling‬‬

‫هنا العكس بقي ال تقدر تمنشن ال‪ gain‬فيها يعني مثال البورصه يا هكسب‬
‫يا هخسر يا ابيض يا اسود‬

‫‪B. Diversifiable Risk and Nondiversifiable Risk‬‬

‫‪o A diversifiable risk affects only individuals or small groups (car‬‬
‫‪theft). It can be reduced or eliminated by diversification.‬‬
‫يقصد بيها انها الخساره دي هتاثر علي عدد قليل من الناس يعني‬
‫عربيتك انت حصلت حادثه و اتخرشمت مين اللي هيبقي مضرور ؟‬

o A nondiversifiable risk affects the entire economy or large
numbers of persons or groups within the economy (hurricane). It is
also called fundamental risk.
o Government assistance may be necessary to insure nondiversifiable
risks.

‫و كل المنطقه ؟ ال هياثر علي كله فبياثر علي مجموعه كبيره جدا من الناس‬

C. Enterprise risk encompasses all major risks faced by a business firm,
which include: pure risk, speculative risk, strategic risk, operational risk,
and financial risk

‫هتواجه الشركات عموما شركات بس مش اكتر زي ايه مثال‬

o Strategic Risk refers to uncertainty regarding the firm’s financial

goals and objectives.

‫هتعرف تحقق الهدف بتاعك اللي انت عايزه وال ال ؟ دي في حد ذاتها ريسك‬

o Operational risk results from the firm’s business operations.

‫ بتعتك اللى كنت شغال بيها اصال ياتبقي صح و‬operations‫نتيجه ال‬

‫تحققلك هدفك ياتبقي غلط و توقعك‬

o Financial Risk refers to the uncertainty of loss because of adverse

changes in commodity prices, interest rates, foreign exchange rates,
and the value of money.

D. Enterprise Risk Management combines into a single unified treatment

• As long as all risks are not perfectly correlated, the firm can offset one risk
against another, thus reducing the firm’s overall risk.
• Treatment of financial risks requires the use of complex hedging
techniques, financial derivatives, futures contracts and other financial
instruments.

E. Systemic risk is the risk of collapse of an entire system or entire market

due to the failure of a single entity or group of entities that can result in
the breakdown of the entire financial system
- Systemic risk is especially important with respect to large financial
institutions that are considered too large to fail without doing major
financial harm to the US economy

 A. Personal risks are risks that directly affect an individual or family. They
involve the possibility of a loss or reduction in income, extra expenses or
depletion of financial assets, due to:
o Premature death
o Inadequate retirement income
o Poor health
o Unemployment

B. Property risks involve the possibility of losses associated with the
destruction or theft of property

• Direct loss vs. indirect loss

– A direct loss is a financial loss that results from the physical damage,
destruction, or theft of the property, such as fire damage to a home

– An indirect or consequential loss is a financial loss that results

 Major Commercial Risks

A. Risk Control refers to techniques that reduce the frequency or severity of
losses:
‫ يعني انا ممكن اعمل كذا حاجه عشان انقذ‬risk control‫اول حاجه ال‬
‫نفسي من الريسك دي‬
– Avoidance
‫اول حاجه اني ابعد عنها يعني وهللا لو البحر عالي و انا خايفه يحصلي‬
‫حاجه مش هنزل و هفضل بره لو السهم اللي هشتريه في الشركه‬
‫ده ممكن يخسرني هبعد ومش هشتري‬

 ‫‪– Loss prevention refers to activities to reduce the frequency of losses‬‬

‫دي بتلغبط بينها و بين اللى تحت ركز هنا قبل ما المصيبه تحصل انا احاول‬
‫اقلل فرصه انها تحصل يعني مثال التطعيمات ضد مرض ا‪ ،‬المرض حصل؟؟ ال‬
‫ماحصلش للشخص ده بس هو خد التطعيم عشان يحمي نفسه و‬

‫انا واحد بتاع قماش مثال احاول ماستذكاش و احط بضاعتي كلها في مكان‬
‫واحد ال حطها في كذا مكان عشان عشان لو مخزن اتحرق مايبقاش‬
‫البضاعه كلها ضاعت‬

‫حصلت مشاكل بيني وبين السبلير شغلي يقف؟ ال طبعا يبقي بتتعامل مع‬
‫كذا حد واحد حصله حاجه يبقي في غيره موجود‬

‫‪B. Risk Financing refers to techniques that provide for payment of losses‬‬

 – Retention means that an individual or business firm retains part or all
of the losses that can result from a given risk.

‫ماتحصلش‬

– Active retention means that an individual is aware of the risk and

deliberately plans to retain all or part of it

– Passive retention means risks may be unknowingly retained because

of ignorance, indifference, or laziness

C. Self Insurance is a special form of planned retention by which part or all

of a given loss exposure is retained by the firm

D. Noninsurance transfer transfers a risk to another party.

– A transfer of risk by contract, such as through a hold-harmless

clause in a contract
