In this paper I hope to explain how these articles and books will help me with my

research question: How does electronics affect a child? Through my research I have

found that electronics can affect a child in more ways than their mental state. Also,

some uses of electronics can be good while others are just used for entertainment and

should be limited. Electronics can have both a positive and negative affect on anyone

depending on how often they use it.

Bavelier, Daphne, et al. “Children, Wired: For Better and for Worse.” Neuron, vol. 67,

no. 5, 2010, pp. 692–701., doi:10.1016/j.neuron.2010.08.035.

The article, “Children, Wired: For Better and for Worse,” was written by Daphne

Bavelier, Shawn Green, and Matthew Dye. This article is an experiment written out and

it explains about all different situations that could happen to children who spend too

much time on electronics. There are many examples including how different video

games have a different influence and outcome on a child’s behavior. The authors are

specialists in their work, and each have a different degree, but they all came together to

do this particular experiment. This source is a part of US National Library of Medicine

and National Institutes of Health.

I will use this source to take in all the positive and negative influence of electronics.

Since this article is mostly experiments on how children react to different media, it will

provide good statistics on the positive affect and negative affect it has on children.

Brody, Michael. “Seductive Screens: Children's Media - Past, Present, and Future.”

Cambridge Scholars P., 2015.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3170902/.

“Seductive Screens: Children’s Media – Past, Present, and Future” written by

Michael Brody was studied and written at Cambridge University. The purpose for this

book is portray real life situations, electronics, and content of electronics to anyone who

reads the book. Brody is a physiatrist and he talks about real life occurrences. He talks

about how enticing TV, video games, and social media is to children and then the

influence it has on them. This book paints a visual picture of how media affect children. I

can use this book to help others get a better understanding of how enticing electronics

and TV shows are for kids.

2018. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/health/screen-time-kids-

psychology.html.

The article “Is Screen Time Bad for Kids’ Brains?” was written Benedict Carey

who is a science reporter for New York Times. This article was written to provide an

insight on the scientific method of looking at this topic. It also goes into great detail of

explaining certain questions regarding the scientific questions asked. The audience is

directed to anyone interested in the topic.

This article will help me to compare and contrast the outcome of electronics

because of the scientific structure of this article. I can use this article to answer many

questions asked about the effects of electronics.

Dube, Nomathemba, et al. “The Use of Entertainment and Communication

Technologies before Sleep Could Affect Sleep and Weight Status: a Population-

Based Study among Children.” International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and

Physical Activity, vol. 14, no. 1, 2017, doi:10.1186/s12966-017-0547-2.

“The Use of Entertainment and Communication Technologies before Sleep

Could Affect Sleep and Weight Status: a Population-Based Study among Children” was

written by Nomathemba Dube, Kaviul Khan, Sarah Loehr, Yen Chu, and Paul

Veugelers. This article was written to show how electronics could affect someone’s

sleep, weight, mood, mindset, etc. All the authors are from the University of Alberta and

published by International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. They did

a study of how much time children spent on electronics throughout the day and their

sleeping patterns.

This article will help me provide the effects of electronics which include changing

weight, mood, and sleep patterns. The external direct relation of too much time staring

at a screen is explained throughout this article.

Dunckley, Victoria L. Reset Your Child's Brain. New World Library, 2015.

“Reset Your Child’s Brain” was written by Victoria Dunkley. This book was

published by New World Library. The purpose of this book is to teach parents and social

workers how to disband a child’s behavioral issues. This book provides examples of

children’s behaviors and issues and how to resolve them. Dunkley is an award-winning

interrogative psychiatrist with her MD. She is writing to parents who have kids with

behavioral issues.

This book is helpful because of all the insightful ways to help counter act the

affects and influences of electronics. If your child has problems or behavioral issue this

book can help you find a solution. While many of these articles talk about problems

electronics could cause this book offers resolutions to the problem.

Lappe, Sara. “How Electronics Could Be Affecting Your Child's Health.” U.S. News &

World Report, U.S. News & World Report, 12 June 2015,

“How Electronics Could Be Affecting Your Child’s Health” written by Sara Lappe

was published by U.S. News. The author wrote this article to help parents realize more

ways to keep their children healthy by putting away electronics more often. Having

children and parents both on electronics could potentially be dangerous. Lappe directed

this article toward parents. The writer is a pediatrician who works with children and she

I will use this article to give examples of how to prevent erratic decisions and less

time staring at a screen for hours on end. This article is also helpful to show that parents

need to put away electronics as well.

Pepitone, Julianne. “What Screen Time Does to a Child's Brain.” NBCNews.com,

NBCUniversal News Group, 5 June 2018, www.nbcnews.com/better/video/the-

impact-of-electronics-on-a-child-s-brain-1235967043828.

“What Screen Time Does to a Child’s Brain” written by Julianne Pepitone and

produced by Kyle Scott was found in NBC News. Pepitone has written for many sources

such as NBC News, Town and Country, New York. The writer’s purpose for this video is

to explain the pros and cons of a child continually being on electronic devices. This

video explains that electronics can help someone stay more calm in a stressful situation

but it impairs the learning of other vital functions.

I can use this video to explain the difference in watching a show from listening to

a show or someone reading a book. It is also useful for the exact situations that are

more developed from doing different activities.
