Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Counting Using Objects

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 1st grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities;
connect counting to cardinality. a. When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order,
pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one
object. (one-to-one correspondence)

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: All students will be expected to be engaged in the activity using Kahoot. Using this application
will help increase engagement in students who may not otherwise be engaged with simple testing or quizzing
strategies. Everyone in the class will be moving at the same pace and will keep students engaged in the task.
Representation: Everyone in the class will be represented in using the student response tools as they will
have to answer the question. Not answering the question may result in losing their place in the game. Using
Kahoot as a student response tool in class will allow for the representation of shy students and English
language learners. There is no way for other students to know if their friends got the question incorrect
unless they look at the screen after the question has been answered. Protecting this from happening, let the
students sit where they would like during the game as long as the screen can be seen. This will encourage
those students who may be shy or trying to gain their confidence.
Action and Expression: Students will be answering these questions and letting the teacher know how they
are doing on the specific subject. All students are free to answer how they would like, and the teacher can
have immediate response to see if a child needs help. All students are actively participating and engaged
during the Kahoot.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the SRT activity, there will be a lot of practice. In large group activities, using the interactive white
board and iPads, complete an activity where the students are taking numbers and applying them to objects.
Starting off with simple objects such as dots. The students will complete a Nearpod activity while in large

group on the iPads. The teacher will be making sure that each student understands the number and how
many objects go along with that number. Moving to small groups, students take 1 iPad per table. The
students will then be rolling a digital dice at the table where they see the dots on the dice and correlate the
dots to numbers with a 1:1 ratio. The teacher can then talk to the students about how 1 dot can be
represented by 1 of any objects. The teacher then introduces the student response tool using Kahoot. The
teacher tells the students that based on the knowledge that they just learned, they are going to start using
objects to represent numbers.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the Kahoot activity the students will be engaged by watching the main SMART BOARD at the front of
the class. The teacher will start the Kahoot by making sure it is pulling up the questions and all the students
are responding. The students can have any device to participate whether it be a phone, iPod touch, iPad or
even a computer. After the question is over, you can see who got it right and the person who answers the
fastest will be in first place. Answering multiple questions correctly in a row will result in a ‘streak’ and will
multiply the points you already have to boost you to a higher place. At this time the teacher can go over how
many students got the question correct and go over the question if needed. Students can also feel free to ask
questions at this time as well.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Immediate response will be efficient in knowing on the spot the students who understood the material, or if
they didn’t understand the material. It could let you know if the question asked was a ‘bad’ question, or if the
material wasn’t taught well enough.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
At this time, the teacher should go over the questions, especially if a lot of students were not sure about the
answer. It is an introductory activity so being thorough when going over it, can make a difference. While going
over the questions, make sure the students are understanding, and make sure those who got the answer
wrong, now understand the right answer. After that the teacher can collect data on individual students or as a
whole class. The teacher should use this data to better instruction and clear up any misconceptions. The
teacher can also use the data to see if any students need individualized instruction for that section.
How will the data be used?
Data is collected while the students are completing the questions. The teacher is able to review those
answers that the students selected while completing the questions. The teacher can use this data to make a

grade for the students. He or she could also use the data to see if the question was a well written question. If
a lot of the students missed one question, the teacher could throw that question out, or choose to reteach
that part if needed. The data could also be collected for the teacher to look at individual reports. These could
be used for parent teacher conferences if a parent asks to see some of the student work. Also, to provide a
report to a parent if their kid is struggling.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
There are a couple of items that I am checking for. I can use Kahoot to quiz my students. I can use Kahoot as a
check in to see where my students are at and direct teaching as needed. I can use the student response tool
to encourage students who may not feel comfortable answering aloud in class to understand how they are
feeling before an assessment. This leads me to say that my personal learning goal for this activity will be to
make sure my students are understanding the material that is in the Kahoot. Also, to be able to know when
my students are struggling and may need individualized learning for that subject.
Reflective Practice:
Students will use the student response tools to show what they know and have comprehended in the lesson.
For the purposes of our lesson, I am checking if they are able to count objects with a 1:1 ratio. They will be
able to show me if they know and how confident they are in their answer. For students who need more
practice, the student response tool will allow me to see who needs some extra help while counting. If
students need the extra help, I can utilize Quizlet to incorporate some drill and practice strategies to help the
students.
