CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

In our life today, Computers are becoming more intelligent as we learn more about human

thinking process. This process has promoted the speed of doing office works and also helped in

decision making of companies. With this computer will continue to make people think smarter. It

also revolutionizes offices and school techniques in smooth and rapid operation. In fact, computers

are more useful. When they are used not just in operation. In the other hand, computers are more

useful when they are used not just to perform calculations, but also to store a large "quantity or

vast amount of information or date in a long period of time. In other words, computers have an

ability to influence human decisions, changing the way we work into a better one and improves

people’s ability to communicate.

Monitoring of the attendance of every student is something that is done by teachers or

proctors. But nowadays, as technology grows wider and faster, things are done conveniently. By

just a click we can already monitor something. ID or identification is a vital aspect in every member

of a school community, because it gives you an identity that you belong in that society or

institution. But because of the large number of students it is sometimes hard to keep track on

someone that is a member of the University. That is the purpose of the ID number, to easily seek

a person’s identity by just typing it on a computer that has the complete information of every

student inside that campus with their corresponding ID number.

Keeping the valid and correct student attendance record in traditional face-to-face class

setting, the faculty staffs should have a proper mechanism. They have to verify and maintain or

manage that attendance record on regular basis. They have difficulties, especially in classes
attended by a large number of students. The manual system also need time longer for reporting the

average attendance of each enrolled student. On the other hand, applying the ID number checking

system may reduce the administrative burden of its staff. Therefore, this paper describes on how

we can manage student’s attendance in class using face recognition technique automatically from

the digital images captured in classroom setting.

The system is a Web-based application developed for daily student attendance in

departments within the university. It facilitates access to the attendance of a particular student in

a particular class. This system will also help in generating reports and evaluating the attendance

eligibility of a student. The system is not only improving the work efficiency, students’ study and

development, but also can save human and material resources.

This study is significant to the athletes, especially the volleyball players, who prefer a

cheaper and healthier. This is also generally significant to those who want to stick to

(organic) chemical-free products. In addition, this can serve as a reference to future

researchers who wish to conduct a related study.

The researchers aim to produce, seek and discover the effects of peppermint as an

energy booster. More specifically, they wish to determine the effectiveness of peppermint oil

on the energy of volleyball players.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In many institutions and organization particularly schools, monitoring of students

is a very important factor specially in identifying every individual coming in and out of the

university every day. School is considered as a second home. Students, teachers, employees and
other school staff spent most of the time in school. Most of the crimes happened inside the school,

this happens because schools do not put much effort about the security. Most schools feel that they

are secured by just hiring and putting security guard in the main entrance. Security is at risk

because in many cases outsider who were not students or enrolled in the school bypasses guards

and personnel assigned and manages to make way of going inside the school. In other cases, some

of the students don’t follow rules and regulations like wearing proper uniform and ID’s upon

entering and they can also enter the school without wearing it or sometimes they forgot to bring

their own ID and borrow others student ID.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

According to the blog article of turningtechnologies.eu, When students miss class, they

miss out on vital information that is essential to their learning, such as important details regarding

assignments, potential syllabus changes, the chance to ask questions – the list goes on. Not to

mention the missed opportunity for a deeper understanding of a topic. The instructor also suffers,

as they do not gain a true understanding of whether or not their course content is being taught

effectively, or if there are elements they need to review – as not every student is in class to give

feedback. (Turning Technologies, 2019)

Universities are learning institutions wherein a student is being prepared for the future and

it is very important to keep track on a student’s attendance to know if he/she is performing

responsibly in school.

And according to the blog article of fedena.com No school day starts without the sonorous

voice of your class teacher taking attendance. With name after name being called, taking roll call

is an inextricable part of the school experience. But what is its purpose? Roll call – or attendance
tracking as education technologists are starting to call it – isn’t just another mindless exercise in

futility. Beyond the practicalities of student discipline, attendance tracking gives educators a better

picture of how their student is doing in class. Attendance tracking allows schools and educational

institutions to make better administrative and financial decisions. It also allows schools to have a

good gauge on that ephemeral thing – student interest.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

General Problem

The university problem is a lot of time the teachers is wasting because they need to check

the attendance of students. Also, some of the student don’t show their selves every school activity

like foundation day, intramurals and culminating. In addition, it is hard for them to identify the

penalty of student to be given depending on his attendance as regards to his/her absences if there

is an activity in school.
Specific Problem

 Students can enter university without ID

 Lack of ways to monitor the attendance
 Students are not aware in validating School ID and ID number
 Parents never knew if their child enter the school or not
 Interception in accepting visitors

OBJECTIVES

General Objectives

The main objective of the ID number checking system for the attendance monitoring, is to improve
and create a system that will easily record the attendance of grade 12 ICT students by just using
their ID number.

Specific Objectives

 To implement school policy and avoiding bias among students

 To ensure the legitimacy of students using ID number
 To verify the exact count of visitors entering the university

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

Based on the problem which the researchers aim to answers, the hypothesis was tested:

Ho: There is no significant difference between using the ID Number Checking System and Not

using the ID Number Checking System.

Ha: There is a significant difference between using the ID Number Checking System and Not using

the ID Number Checking System.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will help monitor the attendance of the Grade 12 ICT Students in a way that the

ID Number Checking System can help the advisers of every section of the Grade 12 ICT Strand to

check if their students are entering the campus.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The sample population selected for this study was limited to 30 senior high school Grade

12 ICT Students from Arellano University, Juan Sumulong Campus. The collection of data was

done at Arellano University, Juan Sumulong Campus in the school year 2018-2019. The research

instrument is a self-structured questionnaire that consists of 10 questions about ID Number

Checking System. This will serve as primary tool in gathering data and results.

The scope of the study will focus on ID Number Checking system as a monitor of

attendance of Grade 12 ICT Students. This study will tackle the advantage and disadvantage of

having an ID Number Checking System in Arellano University. The study does not include other

Strands and other students except for the Grade 12 ICT Students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign

Related Literature

Based on Nephila Web Technology Inc. (2019) The ID Monitoring System is a

software solution that is capable for monitoring, storing and generating attendance report of

students and employees. It is being used by schools and companies particularly in the HR,

Guidance, accounting and administration offices. The system has the following salient features

that are beneficial for schools and companies

Based on Mehmet Kizildag et. al. (2018). Attendance of students into classrooms

or seminar rooms is important and can be considered as the starting point towards attaining a good

education. This process therefore requires attention of the instructor. Among the classical methods

of taking attendance are reading out the student names and check if they are present in the class or

signing a paper by the students present in the classroom. The pros and cons of the classical method

is the useful interaction between students and the instructor through which the instructor can get

to know the students in a small class and on the other hand, loss of time spent while taking the

attendance of a crowded class. Technological improvements can be useful tools to help in the

development of new methods to eliminate the disadvantages of the classical methods while

enhancing its advantages. It is important to identify the correct tools to use in commercial and

scientific studies. Barcode readers, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system, Bluetooth are

just a few of the examples to such tools. However, they were expensive when first introduced and

therefore they had limited use. Nowadays, they become cheaper and they can be used in a variety
of applications, such as, identification, counting, tracking or positioning. Barcodes and their

readers are heavily used in markets to identify the objects on sale. For instance, in shopping

centers, people load their shopping baskets with the products which are labeled with the barcode

and then the cashier uses the barcode reader to identify the products and therefore the prices so

that the total price can easily be obtained for the customer. The use of new technologies could save

precious time of the customer and the shop staff.

And based on Arulogun O.T et. al (2013) The emergence of electronic paradigm

for learning compared to traditional method and availability of almost all information on the

information superhighway (Internet), nowadays have caused students to be less motivated to come

to the lecture rooms than ever before. Laziness on the part of students, nonchalance to school work,

extra social activities that have no importance in aiding the objectives of the institution and a lot

more, may prevent students from attending lectures. Sequel to these, lecturers and administrators

in most developing countries have had to come up with ways to ensure a healthy participation from

students, and make sure that the student-lecturer interactive relationship is kept intact. This in some

cases have come in simple forms like roll calls, while in more interesting cases, can be formats

like surprise quizzes, extra credit in class, etc. These strategies are however time consuming,

stressful and laborious because the valuable lecture time that could otherwise been used for lectures

is dedicated to student attendance taking [8] and sometimes not accurate. In addition to all these

challenges, the attendances are recorded manually by the tutor and therefore are prone to personal

errors. There arises a need for a more efficient and effective method of solving this problem.
