Country Profile: Argentina

1. Geography

Argentina is located in the southern part of South America. The capital of

Argentina is Buenos Aires which has around 2.8 million citizens living there. This country is

alongside Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil. Argentina is mostly made up from The

Pampas which take over one third of this country. Patagonia is another major landform that is in

between Chile and Argentina and there are huge forests which help these countries. The final

major landform is South America which is the continent of Argentina but it has over 250

waterfalls. Some of the major bodies of water are Lake Buenos Aires, Lake Argentino, Lake

Mar Chiquita, Parana River, Iguazu River, Uruguay River, Atlantic Ocean and so much more.

Although there are plenty of water resources not everyone has access to them. The population

mostly came from Europe and has continued to develop. In Argentina it tends to be around

50 degrees Celsius or 122 degrees Fahrenheit. During the winter it could get really

dry and cold. In summer it is hot and humid which affect those who are not living in

stable conditions. The majority of the citizens of Argentina are struggling to live a normal safe

life. Not everyone has access to basic human needs which has been getting worse over time.

This economy has been struggling to be in a stable path because past presidents including the

one right now have not been focusing on the citizens and their conditions.

2. Politics

To begin with the politics of Argentina you must learn the history behind it. Letś start in

1908 when Argentina had the highest capita income in the world by then you could figure that

things in this country were going well. Then the country started going downhill in 1912 when

President Yrigoyen was the reason for male suffrage and the Great Depression in Argentina. To

make things worse he later declared war against Japan and Germany because of the Pearl Harbor

Attack. In 1976 Argentina became a very dangerous country because of the Dirty War where

thousands were killed in suspicion. The most recent action was that the Argentine peso has

lowered down in value which connects to people living in poverty. You might come to

conclusion that Argentina is ruled by a Dictator because of the harsh conditions they are going

through but they have actually been running a presidential democratic republic for quite some

time now. These events have obviously shaped the way their political climate is to this day.

President Mauricio Macri is the current leader and has been since 2015. His ruling and along

with many others have caused a lot of confusion within this country. Citizens are not treated

equally and the rich are the only ones being considered. More people have started to realize this

and they are starting to take an act while others live in fear of what may happen. Argentina’s

political climate has just gotten worse over time but citizens hope for the best in the future.

Argentina does have resources like water in Lake Buenos Aires or other places. Despite how

many potential resources that they have or could get not everyone has access to them. This

leaves people to start living in poverty. A country that relates to this problem but are not as

worried about it is the United States of America. As you may know this is one of the most richest

countries but they still struggle with poverty. Of course Argentina is not as wealthy but both of

these countries are going through this problem yet none of them have found a solution.

3. Economy

Argentina produces a lot of natural resources including abundant lead, zinc, tin, copper,

iron ore, manganese, petroleum, uranium, and arable land. For the time being Argentina’s gross

domestic product in 2018 is 637.6 billion USD. They produce meat, fish, oil seeds,

animal/vegetable fats and cereals. The things that they manufacture is vehicles, gems, metals

(usually for jewelry or other nice things) and some chemical goods. Although they produce

plenty of resources there are still things they don’t have access to. As a result to trading

Argentina is known for their meat. They export $2.5 billion worth of meat to nearby countries

like Chile. Soybeans, corn, wheat, cheese, gold, alcohol are other things they export. Argentina

earns $783.5 million from exporting all these goods. Some of the countries that they export to are

Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Russia, United States, Mexico and

China. In return Brazil, China, Germany, United States, Mexico, Italy, Spain and France are

countries that import resources to Argentina. They usually import telephones, computers,

broadcasting equipment, cars, vehicle parts, hair products, packaged medications, video game

equipment, cocoa powder and sports equipment. Overall, Argentina is a wealthy country but
Argentina 4

many problems have shaped the way it is to this day. To expand on this idea you must know that

the currency that is used in Argentina is the Argentine peso. Over the years it has lost 40% of it’s

value. This economy has been struggling to be in stable path. Ever since president Mauricio

Macri was elected things have been going downhill. He set a goal of having zero hunger while he

was president. This goal has only gotten worse and it started when Mauricio Macri asked the

IMF (International Monetary Fund) for a loan that has affected the economy so much. This is

partially the reason why most of the population is living in poverty. It’s getting really chaotic

while people are fighting for equality.

4. Daily Life

The population of Argentina is 45,101,781. In 2018 the population was 44,695,607.

Fortunately the population has been rising for the past couple of years. According to several of

websites almost all of the population is made up from Europeans. The culture was influenced a

lot by the europeans. As you may be aware one of the cultures that is used in this country is

Tango. This plays a big role in their culture. Another culture that many of this population enjoy

is eating Asado. They do this in special occasions because it's considered really good. As a

country that produces a lot of meat having Asado is a way to celebrate any success.

Out of this population people are expected to live up to 76.9 years. To expand on that statement,

females are expected to live 80.3 years while males are expected to live 73.5 years. Overall
Argentina 5

Argentina is ranked 46th for World Wide Expectancy. The infant mortality rate is 9.8 deaths

out of 1000 births is what impacts this number. More specifically 8.8 females die out of

every 1000 live births and 10.7 male infants die out of 1000 births. These results line up to one

of the reasons male life expectancy is lower than females. Most of the reason that the people are

suffering is because of the conditions that this country is in. As stated earlier the

resources that this environment produce are not fairly being spread out to the citizens. This then

adds up to poverty which is sadly what most of the population is living in. Food and water are

essentials for life and not everyone has access to them in this country but there are things that

this country is supporting people with. This includes education. The literacy rate in Argentina is

relatively high compared to other countries. Everyone aged 15 and up have a literacy rate of

99.13 %. In most countries it is rare that women have a higher literacy rate but Argentina is one

of the countries that do. Women have a literacy rate of 99.14% while men have a rate of 99.1%.

As a latin country the language spoken is Spanish. It is described as a mixture of Spanish and

Italian. Of course most words are pronounced different but there are similar words. The

majority of Argentina are Urban but there are still a population that are Rural. Going into

statistics, 92.4% of Argentina’s population is Urban while 7.6 of the population is Rural.

Separating their differences Argentina’s dominant religion is Roman Catholic.
