Dear Mentor:
On behalf of Northgate High School we would like to thank you for agreeing to be a mentor for a Senior Project. This project is a graduation requirement consisting of three parts: a research paper, an experiential project, and a presentation before a panel of judges.
Mentors are most important in helping students produce a project that applies the knowledge gained during the paper-writing phase. The project challenges them to go beyond the experiences they have had in the past, and to connect their efforts to the community. While not all mentored projects are directly tangible, students must produce actual documentation to verify their 15 hours. Shadowing alone is insufficient.
As a mentor, we ask that you do the following:
1. Review the Letter of Intent that your student will provide to describe his or her Senior Project. 2. Read, evaluate, and comment on a draft of their Research Paper. 3. Help your student define his or her mentored project clearly and decide at what point it will be considered complete. 4. Be certain that the mentored project challenges the student. 5. Meet with your student several times to monitor the student’s work and to provide help and advice to make the project a success. 6. Guide the project, read and critique the paper, and verify at least 15 hours have been spent on the project.
Please keep a copy of this letter for yourself and return the other with the student. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by both the student and the Northgate staff. Our Senior Project program would be impossible without the help of mentors like you. If you have any questions, feel free to call the school at the number above.
Sincerely,
Northgate High School English Department
