Chapter 1

Introduction

This chapter presents background of the study, objective of the study,

significance of the study, and scope and delimitation for a study, “The impact of

shawarma shack in Dr. Carlos S. Lating College”.

Background of the Study

Everyone loves middle eastern cuisine. Not only that, Filipino taste buds

are compatible because of our adaptation to street food. So it is no surprise when

you see a food stall with a giant hunk of meat in a vertical rotisserie being cut in

small portions to fit a taco shaped bread, become a literal breadwinner of a

business for its taste, affordability, and most important of them all is its

affordability.

These days, there are a lot of shawarma stalls and restaurants in malls but

the Shawarma Shack is among those that stand out, thanks to its perpetual Buy 1,

Take 1 promo with affordable rates, delicious food, and it's popular promotional

gimmick, it does not come as a surprise that the Shawarma Shack is a favorite

among customers.

Walther Buenavista is the founder of The Shawarma Shack. He only

wanted to get a regular job to support his family, but no company was interested

to hire him because he did not finish a college degree. Due to lack of employment

opportunities, he and his wife Patricia started to explore putting up a shawarma

food stand in Divisoria using their limited savings. Buenavista thought that he

could use his baking skills to make pita bread while his wife could help prepare

the ingredients and recipe. Soon, the couple began selling shawarma as an

ambulant vendor at the Tutuban night market in late 2014. They would set up

their food stand along the street and bring it home when the night was over.

Unfortunately, their venture was not successful. Daily sales was very low.

Buenavista was so disappointed that he wanted to give up. He was already

planning to work as a taxi driver, while his wife would get a call center job.

Since it was the Christmas season, they decided to just let the holidays

pass before they finally close down. At the time, Buenavista was worried that the

excess inventory that they had bought might go to waste if they failed to sell it

completely. So he came up with the idea of trying out a buy one, take one promo

offer to help dispose of the inventory. Luckily, the promotion clicked and for the

first time, their average daily sales shot up. Encouraged by the strong sales results,

Buenavista decided to continue the business using the same promotion as his

marketing strategy. The business grew and enabled Buenavista to get a real

permanent store outlet and expand from there. Today, Buenavista has over 300

outlets nationwide. He has made The Shawarma Shack the fastest growing food

franchise in the country in less than four years.

When Buenavista decided to franchise the business, he had no idea that he

needed to invest so much money to develop a system. He also never thought that

he would be spending a fortune to get celebrities to endorse his product. But

amidst all the objections, he took all the risks, which paid off well. The shawarma

shack came a bit later in the shawarma food trend at a time when it was more

difficult for similar food concepts to stand out. eager to get consumers' attention,

the shawarma shack offered something better than great-tasting food-free food.

The company pioneered the buy 1 take 1 shawarma offer "forever",

resulting in skyrocketing sales and proof that people love the product and its value

for money proposition.

Objectives of the Study

The objective of this qualitative research is to determine the impact of

shawarma shack in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College. Listed below are the statements

in which will help the researchers:

1. To determine the impact of shawarma in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College.

2. To investigate if shawarma shack is healthy or not.

Significance of the Study

To the Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College students - For them to have

knowledge on what is the Shawarma Shack, how safe and how does it taste.

To the Parents - We the researchers want to provide them information

about Shawarma Shack so that they can ensure the safety of their children who

studies in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College and to those who are planning to buy this

product.

To the Teachers - Provided by the information on top, we ensure that the

teachers will also be informed regarding on this product so they can try one and

have one for them to taste how good it is.

Scope and Delimitation

The general intent of this study is to know the impact of shawarma among

students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College of Quezon city with the focus on

students understanding about shawarma.

This study is limited only to the students of Dr. Carlos Lanting S. College

of Quezon City, attending a k-12 education, school year 2018-2019, who are

interested in Shawarma Shack. This study examines how Shawarma Shack

impacts the students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College.

Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or

conclusions, methodologies and others. Those that were included in this chapter

helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

Foreign Literature

According to Murillo, Middle Eastern cuisine has become

gradually dominant in the Western cultures of the 21st century

because of its wide assortment of healthy dishes. Shawarma is one of

the most popular Middle Eastern cuisines that are making the Western

World crazy for more. It is a wrap or sandwich in which beef or lamb

meat is placed in pita bread and layered with tahini sauce or hummus.

Chicken is not also exceptional for this street food; it is often a

healthier choice.

Foreign Studies

According to the Researchers from Princeton University, they discovered

that shawarma shack as any other street food is very addictive like drugs. They

also state that excessive consumption of shawarma can result in serious mental

problems. The latter statement is still quite questionable as it is not clear how

much shawarma should be really consumed to make one crazy.

According to the Researchers from New Hampshire, they calculated that

the amount of fats in one portion of shawarma approaches to almost 100 g while

recommended daily dose of fats comprises 70 to 80 grams only. Shawarma lovers

easily gain weight. Energy value of one portion of such a food is 1000 kcal.

Consuming this food, one may become obese and this may pose a risk to health.

Some types of shawarma are very rich in saturated fats. They increase cholesterol

level in blood and thicken arteries. Therefore, people, who consume shawarma at

least twice per week, can easily get sick with ischemia. Obese people can get

diabetes, high blood pressure and otherwise suffer from other dangerous diseases.

If shawarma lover lives sedentary way of life and consumes a great amount of

fried, salty and smoked foods, then he is going to suffer cardiac infarction in 10

years.

According to Tarek Na'was, Samples of the popular chicken shawarma

sandwiches from ten reputed restaurants in the Hamra region of Ras Beirut, were

tested for contamination with Salmonella. The sandwiches tested were those

regularly offered to customers, but were of two categories, with and without a

garlic spread that is usually added to this type of Sandwiches. Salmonellawas

isolated from sandwiches taken from 3 different restaurants (30%). Two of the

three were isolated from part not containing garlic while the third was isolated

from a sample that contained the garlic spread. The isolation of

Aeromonashydrophila and Escherichia coli, two other major causes of

gastroenteritis in man, from sandwiches from two other restaurants, is a clear

indication that this type of sandwich tends to be easily contaminated due to many

reasons discussed in this study. It is recommended that strict measures be taken by

the health care authorities to ensure the safety of the numerous consumers of this

commonly favored type of food.

Local Literature

According to The Manila Times, Back in the early 1990s, shawarma, the

vaguely Middle Eastern sandwich-like treat, was introduced in the Philippines and

became instantly popular, setting off a viral proliferation of shawarma kiosks in

every shopping center, transport terminal and other spots with a modicum of

pedestrian traffic.

According to Jeramy, a shawarma in the Middle East is basically

composed off the wrap (that’s not sweet), the meat, specific sauces that goes with

the kind of meat selected, some potato fries, parsley and pickles. Here in the

Philippines, shawarmas have taken a turn for the local palate: Mostly sweet, and

filled with chopped cabbage, sliced cucumbers and tomatoes.

Local Studies

According to the Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences - Silliman University,

Street foods can be seen and perceived in different views by different people. It

may be considered a problem; it may also be a challenge; and to most people, an

opportunity. The problem is the control and maintenance of the quality of the

foods that are sold. The challenge is the provision of various support services

including infrastructure and utilities by government and municipal authorities to

encourage the formal development of the sector while maintaining and assuring

the safety and the quality of the street foods. It is mainly due to the need for

official recognition of this very large segment of the informal sector. The

opportunity lies in employment generation through small enterprise development.

Assumption

The existence of the shawarma shack is indeed a great impact to the

students who studies in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College. It does have a high

popularity among the students and teachers because of its taste and promo prices.

Definition of Terms

For clarity and better understanding of the study, the following terms are

hereby defined operationally:

Affordability- a bility to be afforded; inexpensiveness.

Ambulant Vendor - predominantly male, young, married migrants from the

country's poorest provinces and dwell in the city's most populous areas.

Breadwinner - a person who earns money to support a family.

Budget Friendly - it's priced reasonably, and have enough money to buy it.

Convenient - fitting in well with a person's needs, activities, and plans.

Craving - a powerful desire for something.

Cuisine - a style or method of cooking, especially as characteristic of a particular

country, region, or establishment.

Haphazardly - in a manner lacking any obvious principle of organization.

Pioneered - one who is first or among the earliest in any field of inquiry,

enterprise, or progress.

Rotisserie - a cooking appliance with a rotating spit for roasting and barbecuing

meat.

Satisfaction - fulfillment of one's wishes, expectations, or needs, or the pleasure

derived from this.

Street Food - prepared or cooked food sold by vendors in a street or other public

location for immediate consumption.

Chapter 3

Methodology

This study will discuss research design, sampling method, and gathering

data instrument.

Neuman defines methodology as "understanding the entire research

process - including its social organizational context, philosophical assumptions,

ethical principles, and the political implications of new knowledge from the

research enterprise". Methods are closely linked to this and refer to the way we

gather and analyze data. Therefore, research methods must be selected according

to specific questions.

Research Design

Researchers wishes to conduct a study on the impact of shawarma shack

among the students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College of Quezon City. Researchers

use an interview as instrument to gather data and request the subject of the study to

answer it. This study used a descriptive research to collect the data. Descriptive

research is the most widely-used research design as indicated by the thesis,

dissertations, report of institutions, and research. Its common means of obtaining

information include the use of the questionnaire, personal interviews with the aid

of study guide or Interview schedules observation or either participant or not.

According to the opinions of several experts, descriptive research is a type

of research that provides an accurate portrayal of characteristics of a particular

individual, situation, or group. These studies are a means of discovering new

meaning, describing what exists, determining the frequency with which something

occurs, and categorizing information. In other words, the descriptive research

attempts to describe, explain and interpret conditions of the present i.e. “what is’.

The purpose of a descriptive research is to examine a phenomenon that is


occurring at a specific place(s) and time. A descriptive research is concerned with
conditions, practices, structures, differences or relationships that exist, opinions
held, processes that are going on or trends that are evident. The descriptive
research method refers to the method used to describe data and characteristics used
to describe the population.

The Sampling

The researchers use simple random sampling technique. In this technique,

every item in the population has an even chance and likelihood of being selected

in the sample.

Fraenkel, Wallen and Hyun (2012) does not provide a direct definition of
simple random sampling but they give us an idea that this method give each and
every member of the populationan equal and independent chance of being chosen
and that its advantage is that if the random sample is large enough, it is very likely
to produce a sample that will represent the population. This can be done by
utilizing table of random numbers wherein list of numbers with no order
or pattern is used.

David (2005) refers it as a “ process of selecting sample cases of subset of


sample cases from a population giving all the sampling units equal chances of
being included as sample. Simple random sampling may be done by drawing of
lots or with the use of table of random digits.

Gill and Johnson (2002) do not also provide a direct meaning but they say
that simple random sampling “involved the complete random selection of
population members so that each member has an equal chance of being included in
the sample”

Gathering Data Instruments

The research is formulated as a descriptive study of “The impact of

Shawarma Shack in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College”. This method includes the use

of questionnaires and interviews. The researchers interview the respondents to

gather the needed data.

According to Neuman, a great deal of social research is descriptive, and the

purpose of descriptive studies is to paint an accurate picture of specific details of a

situation, social setting, or a relationship. Descriptive research aims to present a

picture of types of people or social activities and focuses on "who" , "when",

"where" and "how" questions, for instance "How often does it happen?" or "Who

is involved?". Exploring new topics or problems is less of a concern. Instead this

type of social research focuses on describing how things are.

The aim of the interviews was to explore the level of identification and if

there was a sense of belonging connected to being a Shawarma Shack customer

and active member of the school (since the interviewees were students in Dr.

Carlos S. Lanting College) The research interviews were structured and carried

out as everyday conversations (as described by Kvale above) and the questions

followed the recommendations of the researchers. These recommendations ensure

that the researcher has an equal footing with the informants, and by using the

same language as the participants, more interesting and relevant responses will be

produced.

Chapter 5

Summary of findings, Conclusions and Recommendation

This chapter provides an overview of the research study. Summarize the

research findings through the discussion of a study "The Impact of Shawarma

Shack in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College". The function on this chapter is to

summarize the findings of the study in form of conclusion, to recommend, and to

interpret the question. The researchers provide the conclusion of the analysis and

suggestions will be discussed details in this chapter.

Summary of findings

This study is a descriptive research of "The impact of Shawarma Shack in

Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College" which sought answer to the following questions:

1. What do you think of Shawarma Shack?

Based on the answer of the respondents, most of them think that Shawarma Shack

is delicious and very affordable.

2. Why did you choose Shawarma Shack rather than other brands?

Based on their answers, half of them say that they chose this product because it is

budget friendly and it has a convenient price for a student.

3. Did this product meet your expectations? How?

Based on the interview, most of them say that Shawarma Shack met their

expectations because it is very cheap and delicious too.

4. What do you like the most in shawarma shack?

As stated by the respondents, most of them answered that they like the most in

Shawarma Shack is the promo gimmick that it has.

5. What is the main benefit of this product for you?

Based on the conducted interview, most of the respondents answered that the

main benefit of Shawarma Shack for them is the cheap price of it. because they

think Shawarma Shack buy 1 take 1 promo can able to save money.

6. How satisfied are you with shawarma shack?

Based on their answers, most of them are satisfied in shawarma shack because it

is delicious for its price.

7. In a week, how many shawarma shacks do you consume?

Based on the conducted Interview, most of the respondents consume shawarma

shack regularly. Like 2 or 3 times a week. But some of them are not consuming

shawarma shack regularly because they are scared that consuming shawarma

shack regularly might have side effects that may affect their diet plan or health.

Conclusions

Based on the summary of findings the researchers came up with the


following conclusions:

1. Most of the students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College are buying Shawarma
Shack because of its taste and price.

2. Some of them thinks that Shawarma Shack can satisfy their needs and;

3. Most of them are consuming Shawarma Shack twice or three times a week.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings and conclusions the following recommendations are
offered:

1. Students should try this product for its taste and promo for them to save

their money and satisfaction for their tummies.

2. Teachers should also try the product for a new food to taste, they were

in school for a long time, and it’s not bad to try a different food when we have

one.

3. School Administrators will have a maximum guidance on our product

so the shawarma is safe and clean, also they have to try this product because it is

delicious and a satisfaction for everyone.

4. School workers should also try the shawarma shack. Workers have been

doing their works every day; they should try something that will make them feel

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine how popular shawarma shack is to the

students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College. A interview was created containing

basic questions about shawarma shack. A total of 10 students from Dr. Carlos S.

Lanting College were haphazardly interviewed. It was determined that Shawarma

Shack is indeed popular among the students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College

because of its taste and affordable price.The results suggest the need for further

research to investigate how many shawarma shack should the students consume in

one week.
