Introduction

This School Based Assessment is concluded with the intention of examining

or investigating the impacts of social media on the behaviour of teenagers.

This research will be carry out in the small area called Kingston. Kingston is

one of the small village located in Corriverton, it has approximately two hundred

(200) household. Kingston has been considered to be a residential area because its

residents is at a lower level of both social and economic backgrounds. Kingston

also has a mix ethnic population. It is within three (3) hours from the capital city

‘Georgetown’.

The reason why this community was chosen is that the researcher lives at the

community and the researcher has a middle-class standard of living and also his

parents are very well known to the residents of Kingston which means that data

collection would not be difficult to record. Social media have had a great impact on

teenager and needs immediate attention to dealt with.

Reason for selecting area of research

The researcher chose this topic because having been living in the community of

Kingston for approximately fifteen years have noticed that several teenagers are

active on social media. Also having to submit an SBA in partial fulfilment of the

Social Studies course, the researcher has decided to do an investigation into the

impacts of social media on the behaviour of teenagers.

Method of Investigation

To collect data, a printed questionnaire was used for the research. A questionnaire

has several advantages.

 It takes little or no time to be completed.

 It guarantees total confidentiality of the respondents.

 The questionnaire as a data gathering instrument secure more information

because respondents tend to be nervous in interviews.

The thirty (35) questionnaires consisted of eighteen (18) questions. The answers

for the questions only required a tick or a short answer question. The

questionnaires were carried out in complete confidentiality. Hence, respondents

were not required to include any personal data such as their names and addresses.

Procedures for data collection

The community of Kingston has approximately 200 households. It was discussed

and calculated that a sample of 45% was necessary to ensure accurate conclusion

on the causes of river pollution in Kingston.

A total of 35 questionnaire were prepared for distribution to the community

members.

The researcher then decided to choose the households by a process of random

selection which will cater for all the requirements mentioned above. The name of

the households in the village were written, each on a slip of paper. Each slip of

paper was folded and placed into a box. The box was closed and shaken vigorously

to ensure a thorough mixture of the numbers. A total of 35 slips were then drawn

from the box one at a time while shaking the box in the process.

The 35 householders thus were selected and then supplied with questionnaires. In

instances where members were not at home, the questionnaires were left in the

mail box with a note to return the complete questionnaire in my mailbox at, lot 31

Kingston Corriverton, Berbice.
