Disease Essay

Disease is a disorder or function in a human body. It can come in many shapes and forms,

such as physically and mentally. It can also disrupt your overall well-being as a person and to

others around you. With just enough of the right help, we can prevent or accommodate people

with these issues so they can life with a better self well-being.

Many diseases can be preventable. Some diseases include cardiovascular disease,

diabetes, and lung cancer. Cardiovascular disease causes your arteries to become clogged with a

substance called plaque, that slows down the flow of blood throughout your body. Less nutrients

and oxygen are going through your body so you can be in danger to much bigger threats.

Approximately 84 million people in the U.S. suffer from a kind of form of cardiovascular

disease and with this about 5 million heart failure defects affect 5 million Americans. Every one

out of three deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease in the U.S. alone, and it has caused more

deaths compared to cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents combined.

Cardiovascular disease affects organs such as your heart, brain, and kidneys. Physically, this can

cause chest pains, because of less blood flowing in your body. Diabetes affects the body’s ability

to produce insulin, which is a hormone that that turns sugar (glucose) into energy. With diabetes,

your pancreas can either produce too much insulin or none at all. Around 30.3 million Americans
have diabetes with 23.1 million Americans being diagnosed, while 7.2 million aren’t diagnosed.

Diabetes is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S. and 1.5 million Americans are

diagnosed with diabetes every year. Diabetes can affect major organs such as your heart, blood

vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Physically diabetes can lead to a higher chance of chest pains

(angina), damage to your retina which can cause to blindness, and skin and mouth infections by

bacterial and fungal infections. Anyone can get lung cancer simply by breathing in dangerous,

toxic substances, like smoke from cigarettes. 1 in 16 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer

in their lifetime. More than 234,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with lung cancer, which

makes someone being diagnosed every 2.2 minutes. 60% to 65% of all new lung cancer

diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers. Most organs that

lung cancer affects are the lungs, liver, brain, and adrenal glands. Physically, lung cancer can

cause excessive coughing and wheezing, chest pains, short on breath, and coughing up any

mucus or blood. Lung cancer can be preventable by not smoking cigarettes, to stay away from

anyone smoking, and if you have already started smoking, it’s better to quit early on so you have

a lower chance of lung cancer.

Deaths to cardiovascular disease has seen a steady incline since the 1930’s, but until the

mid 1970’s it started to drop and started to rise in the 2000’s and then steadily started to drop

again in the mid 2000’s. Men have always had a higher chance of getting cardiovascular disease

compared to woman, especially in younger ages. In 2015, 84.1 million US adults had

prediabetes, compared to people aged of 65 who had half the percentage. Men develop lung

cancer more than women, 57.8% compared to 45.9%. The rate of new lung cancer cases has

decreased 35% for men while new cases for women were 87% since 1975. Nutrition and exercise
both play a huge role in cardiovascular disease and diabetes. If you have a bad diet and don’t

have any physical activity can both lead to these diseases.

Based on my culture, lifestyle, and diet, I may be susceptible to some diseases like

diabetes. Before, I would eat way more and get little to no exercise. Now, I watch what I eat

better and I actually go out of my way to get some exercise done. Usually lower income families

would buy fast food because it’s a lot cheaper compared to other foods. Continuing this cycle for

weeks to months, the negatives start to add up. Families like this are prone to getting diseases,

like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, at a higher chance.
