THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING AND UNDERSTANDING PSYCHOLOGY IN ART

AND DESIGN

There are importances on why we should learn and understand psychology,

however, what exactly is the meaning of psychology? Psychology is originally a latin word
in which, ‘pysche’ translates to soul, mind, and behaviour whereas ‘logos’ translates to
study. Altogether, psychology is the “study of the soul, mind and behavior.”

By learning and understanding psychology, we obtain the ability to analyze why

certain things or people may behave, act or made a certain way. It would allow us to think
outside the box, percept and make interpretations. Therefore, psychology also plays a
significant role in art and design.

With art and design, I believe that it is important to apply psychology because as
artists or designers, we tend to use artistic mediums to create a range of artworks based
on self-expression. We would express our emotions and soul through artistic
representations or symbolism. Thus, our designs or art would always convey a message in
which the audience can interpret in order to understand what makes the artist and his/her
artwork unique. Especially with graphic design, designers would always think carefully and
research about the visual elements they implement onto their work in order to attract
certain audiences. For example, color is significant as each one of them represents a
meaning and mood. Even having subtle differences in color can affect a person’s
emotional reaction to a piece of design and it’s quality. Another importance is that being an
an artist and creating art would also allow us to understand ourselves and our
surroundings better as applying our creativity physically may be therapeutic. It leads to a
major impact on our mental health and well-being.

To conclude, there is definitely a strong relation between psychology and art and
design. Without the understanding of psychology, the world of art and design may not be
effective and underappreciated.
SUMMARY OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Communication is defined as, “the process of acting on information and transferring

information from one entity to another.” There would be the sender and receiver and they
both can be either people, animals or devices that share ideas and information between
each other as a form of communication.

There are aspects of communication such as process, understanding, sharing, and

meaning. These aspects apply to our daily lives as we are both the sender and receiver.
When it comes to communication, there are different forms of it such as verbal and non-
verbal communication. Verbal communication includes written and oral communication.
Written communication can be either email or letters and its effectiveness is based on the
style of writing, vocabulary and grammar. Oral communication refers to spoken words
during a conversational process and it can either be face to face communication, online
voice chat or phone conversations. On the other hand, non-verbal communication is about
body language, facial expressions and visuals used for communication. Both forms of
communication are combined together at times as when we speak, it would come along
with body language and the facial expressions we make.

Additionally, there are also types of communication based on style and purpose.
There is formal and informal communication. Formal communication would often occur
between officials or during professional occurences in which there is a need for respective
manners. As for informal communication, it is more casual in how we communicate to
others and it does not necessarily require bounderies or limits when it comes to time, place
and subject matters. Informal communication occurs often between friends and family.

Lastly, interpersonal communication is defined as “the communication process

within an individual.” It is a transactional form of human communication involving method
influence for the purpose of managing relationships. This form of communication is
important as it can improve our relationships with people we know on a personal level and
our physical and emotional health. It helps us become a better communicator as we
monitor how we communicate with others.
