REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PRPPOSED PROJECT OF COMPRESSOR

BUILDING AT CTF - ONGC, ANKLESHWAR, GUJARAT
1.0 GENERAL
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited has proposed compressor building at CTF ONGC
Ankleshwar. The geotechnical investigation work for proposed structure is awarded to us by
M/S Lakshya Powertech Private Limited, Ahmedabad vide order no:
LPPL/KPCL_CTF_ANKLESHWAR/2018-19/001 dated: 1.10.2018.
Geotechnical data adopted in this report is based on data of investigation carried out by us at
shown locations in month of October, 2018. The Geotechnical report comprises geotechnical
information and their data interpretation including Borehole logs, Field tests like Standard
Penetration Test, and Laboratory test results.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

1. Drilling two boreholes - 10m deep, and to collect disturbed and undisturbed soil samples.
2. Collection of disturbed sample from 0.5m below EGL/NGL and carry out laboratory CBR
test in soaked and un-soaked condition.
3. Testing of selected soil samples in the laboratory to determine its physical and
engineering properties,
4. Analysis of all field and laboratory data in order to develop engineering
recommendations for foundation design and construction.

3.0 GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE AREA

3.1 Regional Geology
Over most of the parts of Gujarat coast, Tertiary Sediments overlain the Deccan Traps, which
is available a depth of as down as 2000 m near Khambhat (Cambay) and it is somewhat
thinner towards the south of the Narmada in Ankleshwar oil fields. Tertiary Sediments are
mainly comprised of clay and pocket of sandy strata.

3.2 Site Geology

The project site comes under Khambhat (Cambay) Basin region of Gujarat. Major Rivers
located closest to the site is perennial Tapi. The area is dominated by considerably thick
alluvial tracts / Quaternary cover comprises of Alluvium with few variants. Rocky strata would
be at very greater depth.

4.0 FIELDWORK
4.1 EXPLORATORY BOREHOLES AND LOCATION

The Summary of boreholes drilled is given in Table 1. Locations of boreholes are given in Plate
1. Logging of bore holes are attached as Plate 2 to 3.

BH 1 10.0 0.6
BH 2 10.0 0.6
4.1.1 Standard penetration test (SPT)
SPT is conducted as per IS 2131 – 1981 (RA 2016). In a SPT test, standard split spoon
sampler is driven at the bottom of the borehole. The penetration resistance in terms of blows
for 30cm penetration of the split spoon sampler is measured as ‘N’ Value. The blows are
imparted by a standard weight of 63.5 kg falling through a height of 75cm. The resistance is
measures for 15cm, 30cm, and 45cm penetrations. The resistance is measured for 15cm is
ignored since those blows are considered as seating blows due to the loosening of the strata.
The resistance of next 30cm is recorded as standard penetration value ‘N’. If the sampler is
driven less than 45cm (total) then the penetration resistance is given for the last 30cm of
penetration. If the penetration depth is less than 30cm and the blow count is more than 100
then the ‘N’ value is considered as ‘refusal’ and actual penetration is recorded with the blows
given. The observed SPT – N values for each borehole is given in bore logs attached as
Plate 2 to 3.

4.1.2 Disturbed samples

Disturbed representative samples were collected, logged, labeled and placed in polythene
bags.
4.1.3 Undisturbed samples
Undisturbed soil samples are collected in 75mm / 100 mm diameter thin walled sampler
(Shelby tube) from each borehole. The sampler used for the sampling had smooth surface
and appropriate area ratio and cutting edge angle thereby minimising disturbance of soil during
sampling.
4.1.4 Ground Water Sample
Water table was encountered at a depth of 0.60m in general below exiting ground level during
the sub soil exploration work carried out in the month of October 2018. Samples of ground
water were collected for chemical analysis.

a) Soil
pH values in soil show alkaline nature of the ground. Sulphate contents in soil show that site
falls under Class I as per IS 456: 2000. However the site is assigned “Severe” environmental
exposure condition in view of coastal environment. The minimum cement content shall be
320kg/m3 or as per tender specification whichever is more, with maximum free w/c ratio 0.45
and minimum grade of concrete of M30.
b) Ground Water
In ground water contents are more than permissible limit as per IS 456:2000, so it is not
suitable for construction purpose.

6.1.3 Modified Proctor and C.B.R. Test

CBR tests are performed on soil collected from shallow depth of about 0.5 m. The tests are
performed at 95% maximum dry density obtained from modified proctor test. CBR test in both
soaked and un-soaked condition are carried out. The test results obtained are as shown below
in Table 5.

placed minimum below 3.5m depth from FGL

7.2 UNDER-REAMED PILE FOUNDATION

Short under- reamed piles may be used to transfer the structural load to the deeper strata to anchor
the foundations below the active zone. The under – ream bulb should be placed in the stable soils
below the active zone so as to restrict any foundation movement due to heave- shrinkage of the
soils. The capacity of under reamed pile foundation is given in table 5.

8.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The two boreholes comprises of various locations. The sub soil strata consist of top silty
clay (CI-CH) of medium to high plasticity and of medium stiff to very stiff consistency and
hard at greater depth.

2. For minor / lightly loaded structures not sensitive to settlements having width of foundation
up to 1.0m, the foundation shall be placed at 750mm depth from NGL with net safe bearing
capacity not exceeding 5t/m2. A CNS type of cushion of 750mm thickness shall be provided
below lightly loaded structure foundations, laid in layers of 150mm thickness & compacted
to 95% of MDD with suitable compaction methodology.

3. The net safe bearing capacity and safe bearing pressure considering laboratory shear and
settlement parameters for shallow foundation is as given in Table – 4. The value of net SBC
shall be for static vertical loading only. Minimum depth of foundation recommended is below

no moisture variation zone, which may be assumed as 3.0m below natural ground level.
The value of net SBC shall be for static vertical loading only.

4. In case isolated foundation or raft foundations is not feasible to adopt for minor/ lightly
loaded structures, then Under-reamed pile foundation may be considered alternative. The
load carrying capacity of under reamed pile is given in Table 5. The load capacity of piles is
subjected to pile load test verification as per IS 2911-Part 4.

5. The safe load of shallow and pile foundation can be increased by 25% maximum for
transient loading arising out of wind loading and moment arising out of earthquake effects.

6. The top black/yellow sub soil is expansive nature and is not suitable for filling purpose.

7. The backfill soil shall be non-expansive and it shall be done in layers of 150 mm thickness
and each layer shall be well compacted with suitable compactors at 95% MDD of proctor
test to ensure proper & effective embedment of foundations.

8. Water table has been observed at 0.6m depth below existing ground level, during the sub
soil exploration work carried out in the month of October 2018. For design purpose effect of
water level is considered at ground level.

9. Chemical Analysis and Environmental Conditions:

a. pH values in soil show alkaline nature of the ground. Sulphate contents in soil
show that site falls under Class I as per IS 456: 2000.
b. Ground water contents are more than permissible limits and it is not suitable for
construction purpose.

c. The site is assigned “Severe” environmental exposure condition in view of coastal

environment. Concrete for open foundation minimum cement content shall be
320kg/m3 or as per tender specifications, whichever is more, with maximum free w/c
ratio 0.45 and minimum grade of concrete shall be M30. For pile foundation the
minimum cement content shall be 400kg/m3 with maximum free w/c ratio 0.45 and
minimum grade of concrete shall be M30.

REPORT ON GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PRPPOSED PROJECT OF COMPRESSOR BUILDING AT CTF -
ONGC, ANKLESHWAR, GUJARAT (GETS/2018/Reports/2247 Date: 16.10.2018)

10. The lab.CBR value is in the range of 2.20 to 2.40 % in soaked condition.

a) However it is recommended to consider minimum value of soaked CBR as 2% for design

of road pavement with a capping layer of 150mm thickness of material having Lab CBR
10% shall be provided in addition to Sub-base (Ref: IRC 37: 2001, Cl 4.2.1.5).
As here sub-grade is expansive soil, so provide minimum buffer layer of 0.6 to 1m thickness
of non expansive soil in layer of 200mm each well compacted below capping layer. (Ref:
IRC 37: 2001, Annx-4).

11. The stability of the vertical cut for shallow foundation excavation shall be done at
0.2(H):1(V) However as the soil varies from place to place excavation slope may be flatter if
required.

12. As per IS: 1893, the site falls in the seismic zone III of India. In general liquefaction takes
place in loose saturated sandy strata. At this site the sub strata are silty clay in nature
having very stiff to hard consistency and high cohesion. The GWT is also deep and hence
chance of liquefaction at this site is very low.

13. In case the actual sub-soil conditions during excavation for various foundations are found
different from what has been reported above, consult us for further clarification
