A little history

The radish belongs to the family of the Cruciferae, which includes 380 genera and
about 3,000 species native to temperate and cold regions of the northern hemisphere.
The importance of this family of vegetables is that they contain sulfur compounds,
considered to be powerful antioxidants that help prevent disease. You can talk about
six types of radishes in terms of form and color:

♦ Chinese radish, Japanese radish: it comes from Japan and is characterized by

its elongated cylindrical shape. It is white and mild flavor.
♦ black radish or winter is cylindrical and rounded. Your skin is black and very
difficult to digest, while its flesh is white and more digestible.
♦ Radish: the variety discussed in the article, which may have spherical, oval or
cylindrical. The looks presented radishes also depend on his season. So too
can be classified according to their growing season:
♦ Spring Radishes: have a spherical shape and its size is usually not very large.
♦ Radishes Summer elongated shape and its size is larger than the spring. In
general, radishes, spring and summer are varieties that are eaten raw.
♦ Radishes Fall: are larger than previous ones and usually cooked before
consumption.

For serving the Radish

♦ are attributed antiescorbúricas diuretic properties and is said to help relieve

indigestion and flatulence and that can be consumed as an expectorant.
♦ Has a low calorie content, moderate levels of vitamin C and small amounts of
B vitamins, iron and phosphorus.
♦ The radish has a characteristic pungent taste due to the presence of mustard oil
in the tuber.
♦ Usually the tubers are eaten fresh in salads. You can also boil or fry,
especially the tubers of long-cycle varieties, which are longer and more
consistent. The leaves are also interesting as a food substitute for spinach in a
tortilla or vegetable dish.

A bit of botany

Part of the cruciferous family, like cabbage and turnips. The brassicas are
characterized by flowers grouped in clusters, with four petals, fruits are elongated
pods (siliqua) within which the fruits are round and small.

Its scientific name is Raphanus sativus. It is an annual that blooms the same season
planting. Form an edible tuber which is a thickening of the root under which
accumulate reserves.

Radish Varieties

There are varieties of tubers of different colors: red, yellow, red and black and white.
According to the crop cycle can be classified into three types of varieties:

Short cycle varieties: they are varieties that can be harvested four weeks after sowing.
You can plant all year round provided there is no risk of heavy frost. The tubercle is
small and rounded.

Variety of summer-autumn tubers are larger and more elongated than the previous
ones. The growing season is longer, about 6 weeks.

Winter varieties are those that are larger tubers and have a growing cycle of about
three months.
How to grow radish

The culture is very fast and can do most of the year provided there is no danger of
heavy frost. In winter crop duration serámayor in summer and spring.

The intense summer heat can cause a more pungent taste. It should be directly sowing
seed, spreading or in rows. After germination the plants we eliminate envelopes to
leave about 5 cm of separation between them. For long-cycle varieties we increase
the distance to 10-20 cm. If plant density is too high, tubers will be very small.
If harvested too late radish is hollowed and the taste is more bitter than usual.

It's a good idea to plant a row of radishes every 10 days for a continuous harvest
throughout the spring and summer.
