Dear Mrs. McFadden,

Senior year for a high schooler contains more work than I have ever encountered in my life time. It
sometimes feels as though I am drowning in an abundance of assignments. Everything seems to be okay
until the cycle starts all over again. The senior exit project is a continuous project that seems will never end,
and due to Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Systems this project is required. One must choose a topic for
their project, preferably their passion. It is not necessary for it to be a passion, but it will make completing
the project much easier in the long run. For this, I decided to do my project on effective ways to teach
students with disabilities.

My service learning consisted of fifteen hours of working with adolescents with special needs at a local
elementary school. I learned the techniques that special needs teachers use to most effectively teach their
students with disabilities. I was also able to help them with classwork. This allowed me to use those
techniques in a way that they could easily understand. Through this process, I have learned what skills are
most and least effective in educating adolescents in a school setting.

For my product, I decided to create a survey to give to a couple special ed. teachers at the elementary school
to ask them as to how they go about teaching their students with disabilities. The survey will ask the teachers
about the accommodations they make for their disabled students and what their techniques are for teaching
students with disabilities. I will then give a short presentation in which I will explain the best teaching or
communication methods for them to use in their classrooms. The PowerPoint will entail a detailed list and
explanation filled with skills they should use to teach their students with special needs. The list of skills
will be based off of my research through both service leaning and scholarly sources. I will also include
common struggles that adolescents with disabilities face to help the teachers better understand their thought
process.

For my final product, I will be presenting to the special ed. teachers at McKee Road Elementary. The survey
will be given to them to complete, prior to the presentation, so that I can review and use their responses as
artifacts for my product. I will then send out a formal email to the teachers at my school, Levine Middle
College High School, to help them work more effectively with their students with disabilities.

I will be creating this product solely on my own with the best of my abilities. I look forward to creating this
presentation and conducting this survey to come together as my final product.

Sincerely,
Alexandria Mae Ashley
