As the race for the State House
winds to a close – with less than a
week to Election Day – time for Gov.
Martin O’Malley is whizzing by. He’s
almost daily crisscrossing the state,
talking with voters and still attending
to his job as governor.
Sitting down to his first meal out
of the last 10 to be eaten somewhere
other than in the car, he was tired, but
focused and enthusiastic about the
future of the state. “These next two
decades can be Maryland’s decades,”
he said, “if we make the right choices
that allow us to make this transition
to the new economy and be one of the
winners in the new economy.”

Hill, now teaching law at Brandeis University in Massachusetts,
said she initially thought the call was a prank and forwarded the
message to campus police. But when a reporter from an ABC News
affiliate sent an e-mail to Virginia Thomas, the identity of the voice was
confirmed as that of the Supreme Court justice’s wife.
“I did place a call to Ms. Hill at her office extending an olive branch
to her after all these years, in hopes that we could ultimately get past
what happened so long ago,” Thomas wrote in an e-mail response.
“That offer still stands, I would be very happy to meet and talk with her
if she would be willing to do the same. Certainly no offense was ever
intended.”
Hill told ABC News, “I don’t apologize. I have no intention of
apologizing, and I stand by my testimony in 1991.”
Meanwhile, an ex-girlfriend of Thomas, former assistant U.S.
attorney and Senate Judiciary Committee counsel Lillian McEwen, told
The Washington Post that Hill’s claims are not unfounded.
“He (Thomas) was always actively watching the women he worked
with to see if they could be potential partners,” McEwen, 65, told the
Post. “It was a hobby of his.”
She added, “He was obsessed with porn. He would talk about what
he had seen in magazines and films, if there was something worth
noting.”
McEwen, who did not testify during Thomas’ 1991 Senate Judiciary
Committee hearings, said she hopes her revelations will help push sales
of her memoirs.
Virginia Schools Pull Textbook Citing Black Confederate
Soldiers
Loudon County, Va. schools have pulled a textbook that incorrectly
claims thousands of Black troops fought with the Confederacy. The
Virginia Education Department warned schools about the mistakes so
teachers could alert students when teaching the Civil War chapter, “Our
Virginia: Past and Present.”
“Thousands of Southern blacks fought in the Confederate ranks,
including two black battalions under the
command of Stonewall Jackson,” the
questionable passage reads. 
Carol Sheriff, whose child is a
fourth-grade student in Virginia schools,
discovered the error. Sheriff is a history
teacher at the College of William and
Mary and said while some Blacks
defended slave owners, there were no
Black soldiers in the Confederacy.

Memorial Service Set for Slain Pace U. Student
A memorial service has been set for Pace University football player
Danroy “D.J.” Henry on what would have been his 21st birthday, Oct.
29. Days before the service, Henry’s friends remembered the spirited
sports star’s spirituality and kindness.
“D.J. had a strong belief in guardian angels,” said Chantele Hosein,
one of his close friends, in an interview with BlackAmericaWeb.
com. “ One day before a police officer killed Henry, Hosein said she
spoke with him about a tattoo she was designing that included an
angel, a football, his jersey number, 12, and praying hands with his
mother’s name underneath.  “I’ve completed the artwork now,” Hosein
continued.

NAACP Ties Tea Party to Hate Groups
The NAACP says it can document connections between the tea
party and racial hate groups in America.
The report, titled “Tea Party Nationalism,” which was written by the
Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights with the support
of the NAACP, was released Oct. 19 and claims that various groups use
tea party events as platforms to push their racist views and ideals.
“We at the NAACP believe that a majority of tea party supporters are
sincere, principled people with basic good will,” NAACP President
Benjamin Jealous told reporters Oct. 19. “[But] we do have a
problem when prominent tea party members who have direct ties to
organizations [to racist groups] are allowed to use tea party events to
recruit people for those White supremacist groups. We have a problem
when tea party members offend Congress people with racial epithets
or vicious slurs or spit on them. And most importantly, we have a
problem with a majority of the tea party staying silent and not loudly
condemning that sort of behavior.”
As examples of the tea party’s alleged affiliation with racists and
anti-Semites the report cites an invitation by Dale Robertson, chairman
of the 1776 tea party – a faction of the National Tea Party – to Martin
“Red” Beckman to appear as a guest on the Tea Party Radio Hour.
According to the report, Beckman employs anti-Semitic rhetoric in his
advocacy of the establishment of citizen militias.

NPR announced that same evening that
they were ending Williams’ contract with
the company. “Juan has been a valuable
contributor to NPR and public radio for many
years and we did not make this decision lightly
or without regret,” the statement posted on the
NPR website read.
In her memo to staff, Schiller further
explained her decision, saying Williams’
comments compounded a pattern of his non-
adherence to NPR’s journalistic standards.
“Juan’s comments on Fox News last
Monday were the latest in a series of deeply
troubling incidents over several years,”
Schiller said in the memo. “In each of those
instances, he was contacted and the incident
was discussed with him. He was explicitly and
repeatedly asked to respect NPR’s standards
and to avoid expressing strong personal
opinions on controversial subjects in public
settings, as that is inconsistent with his role as
an NPR news analyst.
“After this latest incident, we felt
compelled to act.”
Williams, 56, who also serves as a political
commentator for FOX News, outraged Muslim
advocacy groups and liberal commentators
who demanded his ouster. According to CBS
News.com, conservative bloggers deemed the
incident political correctness spiraling out of
control.
In sharper remarks before an audience at
the Atlanta Press Club on Oct. 21, Schiller said
Williams should have kept his feelings about
Muslims between himself and “his psychiatrist
or his publicist,” a statement for which she
later apologized, calling it “thoughtless” in a
posting on NPR’s website.
Richard Prince, Maynard Institute’s
“Journal-isms” columnist believes Williams’
affiliation with both companies was among the
primary reasons for conflict. “I think that the
whole situation is unfortunate and I think the
problem is that Juan Williams was working
for NPR and FOX and they have two different
cultures and in the end, they were hard to
reconcile,” Prince told the AFRO in a recent
interview. “NPR does not endorse the kind of
behavior that is acceptable or even encouraged
on FOX and that was part of the problem.”
Prince added that the incident can’t be viewed
in isolation, as Williams was in this conflict
with the two companies in the past. “There
have been other cases where the factor that
he was working for both [companies] caused
problems,” Prince said. Especially the time
when he compared Michelle Obama to Stokely
Carmichael and the time where he interviewed
President Bush after NPR told him not to.
“This latest event is not simply about what
he said; it’s about whether NPR wants a
contract worker who causes them this kind of
discussion.”
George Curry, award-winning journalist
and former editor-in-chief of Emerge
magazine and the NNPA News Service,
echoed Prince’s remarks in saying there was
a direct conflict between Williams’ role as a
news analyst and political commentator.
“I disagree [with his firing] for what he said,”
Curry told the AFRO in a recent interview. “A
lot of times, his remarks really went over the
edge and he should have never been in that
capacity. I don’t think he should have been
fired for voicing his opinion because he was
in this dual [role] that was bound for conflict
since the beginning.”
Williams—whose role at Fox News has
since been expanded—said his remarks were
used as “a pretext to get rid of me” and that
NPR’s action amounted to “censorship.” He
also said his critics were engaged in “character
assassination.”
“To get fired obviously is no pleasure,”
Williams said on Fox News. “But then to
be called a bigot and the innuendo that I’m
somehow unstable was, I thought, despicable.”
Since the firing, Republicans have
defended Williams and are striking back at
NPR. Last Friday, House Minority Whip Eric
Cantor, R-Va., said in a statement that “over-
reaching political correctness is chipping
away at the fundamental American freedoms
of speech and expression.” He also added
NPR’s federal funding to the YouCut initiative,
a competition that seeks public input on
programs, Republicans should cut from the
budget.

to see Gov. O’Malley take a more aggressive
stand against the duplication of higher
education programs in the historically Black
colleges and universities, which started during
the Ehrlich governorship. A large percentage
of our community relies on HBCUs as the
sole source for its higher education. We
believe the continued allowance of the
existing duplication places HBCUs at a
substantial disadvantage – indeed jeopardizes
the future educational opportunities of our
children.
When considering former Gov. Ehrlich’s
candidacy, we are not convinced that the same
level of sensitivity exists with respect to the
issues important to the Black community.
When we looked at the successes Ehrlich
offers to demonstrate his commitment to the
African-American community – appointments
and HBCU capital funding – these are
commendable, but we view them as merely
cosmetic actions in comparison to some of the
more important issues - jobs, graduation rates,
etc - currently facing our community. And
while we do not judge him only by the party
he chooses to represent, we cannot ignore it,
despite his requests to be judged solely on his
actions. While departing from the Republican
script on some issues, he has not convinced
us he is really different from the party he has
always chosen to be associated with.
The Black community is entitled to more
than just a prospective “trust me” pitch in
return for its vote. We believe our votes in this
election should be cast for candidates whose
demonstrated past actions best address the
important needs of our community.
While O’Malley is not perfect – he
needs to take more responsibility for how
damaging his zero-tolerance program was
to the Black community when he was
Baltimore’s mayor – his actions as governor
convincingly demonstrate he is the better of
the two candidates. For the reasons outlined,
we encourage everyone to participate in the
election and to cast your ballot for the team of
O’Malley/Brown.

No Superman – or Superwoman –
Needed to Fix D.C. Schools
Let’s get one thing straight

Washington Chancellor Michelle Rhee
fired herself.
No surprise that Rhee’s resignation was announced two
weeks ago at a press conference staged by outgoing D.C.
Mayor Adrian Fenty and presumptive mayor and current D.C.
Council Chairman Vincent Gray. “One City,” Mr. Gray’s
campaign cry, may take a giant leap forward for reconciliation
now that one of the District’s most divisive figures will exit.
No one more than the caricature of Wonder Woman with a
broom is responsible for her debatable tenure and her disruptive
departure than the overrated Rhee herself. When you publicly
state that you cannot work for anyone except your current boss
to purposely raise fear in the masses, then what do you expect
when the masses give him the boot?
That Rhee interjected herself as a political lightning rod in
the Democratic mayoral primary last month between Fenty and

engage the voices of all education stakeholders in a genuine,
authentic conversation about what it will take to fix our schools
and improve academic achievement.”
Gray was not only dirty politics, it was also a serious disservice
to the school children she claims to put above all else. All else,
it appears, except herself as she sought to save her job and
raise her profile for personal gain on the backs of “poor and
marginalized children” and veteran Black teachers she replaced
with novices like herself.
Listen beyond the tough talk. When the media hype subsides
and substantive analysis is conducted, Rhee will fall short.
Test scores, for one, are sporadic and only one measure of
success. Many of the reforms she touts were the brainchild
of her predecessor Superintendent Clifford Janey, whom she
gives no credit. Improved school facilities were the purview
of another agency head, Alan Lew. School observers and
educators are raising serious questions about the formula Rhee
used to arrive at a higher graduation rate. As for more parents
opting to place their children in D.C. public schools for the first

at my local voting place,

to myself, “Boy this is a wonderful photo. There’s my pastor
and [then-Housing and Urban Development Secretary] Mel
Martinez, [former Baltimore delegate] Tony Fulton and me.”
Then, I saw Robert Ehrlich in the picture with us, along
with the words, “Democrats for Ehrlich.”
That campaign literature was a lie – and, even today, I cannot
fully express the anger that I felt in response to that trickery.
I had been one the biggest supporters of Kathleen Kennedy
Townsend, Bob Ehrlich’s Democratic opponent in that 2002
election. So, when I discovered the fraud, I immediately went
on the radio and television with the truth. To set my neighbors
straight, I publicly denounced the dirty trick that the Ehrlich
campaign was trying to play on our community. I vowed to
Post Reconstruction Era
Racism still exists in Virginia and elsewhere in this country.
The latest example is the GOP united opposition to health care
reform.
If you believe that there’s not racism in this state and
elsewhere in this country, then you’re not living in the same
country I am. I and other individuals made reference to returning
to a post reconstruction era after the stealing of the 2000
presidential election. Reconstruction era is listed as the period
1865-1877. During this period after the Civil War, in summary,
reconstruction policies were implemented that gave freed slaves
the right to vote and other benefits. In many states new state
governments were formed with the cooperation of two groups
called “carpetbaggers and scalawags.” The backlash and violent
opposition to the two groups led to federal intervention by
President Grant. Union army intervention ceased and the new
government control collapsed. What followed were the rebirth
of a violent organization, the enactment of Jim Crow laws and
disenfranchisement of most Blacks. The GOP monopolized this
system of class supremacy and second-class citizenship for Blacks
since the 1960s. Then the election of 2008 brought back the White
Southerner’s memory of the reconstruction era which is playing
a major role in the current backlash against President Obama
(federal intervention and state rights are the code words). The
health care reform can be termed the 21st century reconstruction

time in 39 years, that trend may have more to do with
economics than education.
Let’s get another thing straight: One person does
not a reform make. Even great leaders, who did
more than collect hyped headlines, needed a cadre
of faithful followers who bought into their missions.
You cannot forge successful reform or manifest any
major social movement through intimidation, false
accusations and questionable sanctions; you must
negotiate a respectful and trustworthy partnership.
Leigh Dingerson is an education policy
consultant, a community organizer and the mother of
two D.C. public school students who recently wrote
“Proving Ground: School Rheeform in Washington,
D.C.” for Rethinking Schools. She told the Institute
for Public Accuracy, “There is nothing remarkably
visionary going on in Washington. The model for school
reform that’s being implemented here is popping up all over the
country, heavily promoted by the
same network of conservative
think tanks and philanthropists
… that has been driving the
school reform debate for the past
decade. It is a reform based on
the corporate practices of Wall
Street, not on education research
and theory.”
Further, Ms. Dingerson adds
that Kaya Henderson, Rhee’s
interim replacement, must
“quickly signal to parents and teachers in the District that
she wants to work WITH them to develop the most effective
approaches to our schools. Strong teachers need to be supported
and empowered. Students need additional supports to be able
to focus on learning. The damage to teacher morale in DCPS is
going to take some time to overcome. Ms. Henderson needs to
signal that she understands that, and will include the city’s best
teachers in the process.”
Elizabeth Davis, a popular and leading candidate for
president of the Washington Teachers Union in the upcoming
election, has said that simply firing teachers and union busting,
Rhee’s crowning claim to fame, does not constitute education
reform.
“As an educator, my question is about the children [Rhee]
has purported to serve for the past three years. How have they
faired?” Ms. Davis asks. “I’ve grown tired and bored with
myself that I would do everything in my power to assure that
we never would be defrauded or victimized again.
The fires to protect our vote still burn deep inside of me.
My great-great-grandfather, Mr. Scipio Rhame, was born
a slave. Yet, during Reconstruction –just three years after his
slavery had ended – he had the courage to be among the first
of our people to register and vote in the Second Precinct of
Manning, Clarendon County, S.C.
I often think fondly of Scipio Rhame, marveling at his
determination to do the right thing back in 1868 despite the
personal danger that he must have faced. And, I am proud to
share his blood – and humbled that he (and so many others)
risked their lives so that we could be counted as full citizens of
what now is the greatest nation in the world.
This is the personal reason why Election Day trickery makes
me so angry. However, my commitment to “voter protection”
is grounded in reasons that are far more compelling. Voter
intimidation, voter suppression, dirty tricks and fraudulent
campaigning are cancers that threaten the very heart and soul of
our democratic republic.
More than 142 years after Scipio Rhame took his stand,
risking personal reprisals so that his descendants could have
better lives, efforts to cheat us out of our franchise are still
clear and present dangers to our community. That is why Sen.
Ben Cardin, Del. Sandy Rosenberg and I joined Maryland
Democratic Party Chair Susan Turnbull, Voter Protection
Director Amanda LaForge and Monumental Bar Association

conference last week. Our purpose was to remind voters to

era beginning. The GOP rhetoric will say that poor people and
Blacks are happy, so there is no concern for the Republican Party.
Health care reform is good for Whites, Blacks and browns, but
not corporations. Poverty and health care are not priorities for the
GOP. Republican governors and their AGs (attorney generals)
have repeatedly blasted the health care overhaul passed by
Congress this spring. More Blacks need to get mad and say (and
demonstrate tangible actions like boycotting business operations
– not marching), I am not returning back to Jim Crow days. This
is difficult for most Blacks because of the Black church culture,
lack of education, a job and the William Lynch principle. Just
a look at the individuals, states and governors (Jindal, Christle,
Pawlenty, Barbour and McDonnell) making the radical statements
and attacks supports my comment. Racial “sound bites and codes”
has increased the closer we get to Nov. 2. Has anyone seen the
“first Black republican national committee chair?” RNC Steele’s
absence again reinforces the GOP racism status. On Nov. 3 you
will see the start of the 21st century post reconstruction era.

resumes” and “capitalizing on a national anti-public education
campaign to dismantle public education and replace it with a
corporate ‘for profit’ model to siphon as much as $600 plus
billion dollars of public education funds that’s up for grabs.”
Ms. Davis, and her running mate, noted educator Emily
Washington, [no relation] intend to show that while Rhee and
others bash teachers as the sole roadblock to education reform,
they will “address these issues with holistic, research-based
findings that often serve as barriers to the academic success of
poor children.”
Referring to the film about America’s abysmal public schools,
Waiting for Superman, which prominently features Rhee, Davis
said, “We don’t need to wait for superman, superwoman or
any other iconic, media creations to reform the public schools
of the District of Columbia. We simply need school and city
leaders who are willing to engage the voices of all education
stakeholders in a genuine, authentic conversation about what it
will take to fix our schools and improve academic achievement.”
Let’s get the most important thing straight: African
Americans must revert to our roots by raising the stature of
academic achievement and must make education our number
one priority again. We are responsible for educating our
children, no one else, especially not some fly-by-night Wonder
Woman seeking stardom.

We also wanted our neighbors to know that attorney

will be there with us on Election Day, protecting our right to
vote and have our votes counted. And that voters will have the

We will protect our voters because it is the right thing to
do. It is the American thing to do. But, these voter protections
are especially important in this year’s elections because
our community has a lot at stake. Gov. Martin O’Malley,
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, and our colleagues on Maryland’s
Democratic congressional team are time-tested allies and
friends of our community. Despite a constant assault of
half-truths and abuse, they have stayed true to our values –
protecting our schools, expanding our health care and doing
everything within their power to save our jobs and our homes.
President Barack Obama believes in this Democratic team –
and so do I.
Our right and power to elect trusted leaders like these are
what Scipio Rhame and his contemporaries had in mind when
they summoned the courage to vote back in 1868. On Nov. 2,
we should do the same.
Our future is at stake.

Racism
It is sad to see Barack Obama as a Democrat, since the
Democrats have always been the party of racism. Republicans
freed the slaves, gave them the vote and education, and equal
opportunities. Following the Compromise of 1877, which put
Republican Rutherford B. Hayes in the White House, Washington
removed federal troops that had been supporting Republican
administrations in the South, the Democrats returning to power
implemented their policies of Jim Crow laws, segregation, voting
restrictions and, of course, lynching. The biggest opponents of the
Civil Rights Bill of 1964 were entrenched Southern Democrats.
Republican Sen. Everett Dirksen was a pivotal sponsor of that
landmark legislation. We owe him and the Republicans a debt of
thanks. Obama should have been a Republican.
Democrats have been kowtowing to minorities for decades
but have delivered little. Will Hispanics fall for it, as the African
Americans have?
Minorities need to wake up to the lies of the Democratic Party,
tell them to put up or finally shut up. How many Democrats like
Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid have African Americans, Hispanics or
Jews on their staff?
Don’t ask the Democrats what they are saying, but what they
have really done for minorities. And vote that way.

A lot can happen in a
decade. The very fabric of
society itself can change
over the course of one year,
let alone 10 of them. Ten
years ago family members
could walk their loved ones
to the departing gate of a
flight, something practically
impossible these days and10
years ago not many people,
especially in the Black
community, would have
said they would see a Black
president in their lifetime.
In the music business,
the odds are stacked highly
against any musician that
he/she will remain relevant
for more than a handful of
years. To retain any type of
longevity takes talent, hard
work, and undoubtedly a
stroke or two of luck. It may
have been one, two, or all
three of the aforementioned
reasons, but Soulful
Symphony has been beating
the odds for the past decade.
As a testament to its
perseverance, Soulful
Symphony will be celebrating
its landmark anniversary
at the Joseph Meyerhoff
Symphony Hall Oct. 30
Founded and conducted
by Darin Atwater, the
75-member orchestra is
comprised primarily of
African-American and Latino
musicians. Throughout its
existence, the orchestra has
bucked the confinements of
traditional classical music,
instead making what can only
be referred to as a unique,

is known to combine a range
of musical styles in his work,
including gospel, jazz, R&B,
and hip hop. The orchestra
has prided itself on pushing

next.
Throughout its existence,
the Baltimore-based
orchestra and its composer
have achieved success at
both the local and national
levels. Soulful Symphony
formed a historic joint
venture with the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra in 2004.
This venture has given the
orchestra the opportunity to
spread its unique brand of
classical music to those across
the state. Soulful Symphony
has since performed sold-out
shows at both the Meyerhoff
in Baltimore and the Music
Center at Strathmore in North
Bethesda, Md.
Atwater himself has
received recognition and
positive reviews on his music
from The New York Times,
The Washington Post, and The
Philadelphia Inquirer. NBC
named him in The Grio 100
along with other celebrity
powerhouses such as Oprah
Winfrey and LeBron James.
Ebony magazine placed him
on its “30 Leaders of the
Future” list and the Baltimore
Business Journal placed him
on its “40 under 40” list.
Atwater is also no stranger
to receiving hardware. He
was the recipient of the 2009
Vision Award from Maryland
Public Television and the
2008 Legends and Pioneers
Award from The Afro-
American Newspaper.

For Colored Girls is a fireball of raw, organic rage bundled
into 120 minutes worth of film. All at once it’s ugly, beautiful
and profoundly abstract, a dizzying triad of perceptions that
will either stamp For Colored Girls a box office triumph or a
commercial bomb.
Critics may question whether mass audiences are ready
(or willing) to ingest the onslaught of unnerving topics For
Colored Girls engages. Rape, murder, abortion, mental illness,
promiscuity, homosexuality, Black female identity and poverty
are only a fraction of the macro social issues tackled, and comic
relief comes fleetingly.
But understanding Tyler Perry’s adaptation of Ntozake
Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide
When the Rainbow is Enuf requires recognition of the book
hailed as a revolution in Black women’s literature.
In its purest form, the original stage production is a series
of 20 poems performed by seven principal characters known
only by color, such as the Lady in Yellow and the Lady in Red.
Here, Shange’s words are a jungle of metaphor and feminist
affirmations; puns and simile; Ebonics and colorful imagery
(“hips painted with orange blossoms & magnolia scented
wrists.”) On page and in theatre productions, For Colored Girls
has been critically acclaimed and even garnered a Tony Award.
But where the author’s vision takes place in a racially

Though rapper T.I. may be
one of the latest additions to the
sprawling list of rappers-turned
fashion designers, his clothing
line AKOO is certainly in a
league of its own.
AKOO, (an acronym for
A King Of Oneself), is a
contemporary men’s clothing
line of jeans, hoodies, polo
shirts, jackets, sweaters and
bags. The line hit shelves in
2008 and since its inception,
it’s received tremendous
acclaim for its unique

Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty is a
dramatization based on events that occurred in Chicago in
1994. It tells the story of Robert “Yummy” Sandifer, a young
boy whose death made national headlines.
In the comic book-style novel written by G. Neri and
illustrated by Randy DuBurke, 11-year-old Roger is trying to
understand his classmate Robert “Yummy” Sandifer’s death,
but making sense of his short, violent life may prove most
difficult.
Yummy was a bundle of contradictions. He ran with a
local gang, went to jail frequently and police were accusing
him of murdering a 14-year-old neighborhood girl. But
Yummy also loved sweets and kept a teddy bear.
As Roger struggles to determine whether Yummy was
some sort of monster or a kid gone awry, he encounters more

joined before his death. Roger’s older brother also belonged
to that group of local terrors, and Roger soon finds himself

Simmons HBO show “Def Poetry.” Shortly thereafter, rapper
Kanye West invited him to appear on his debut album College
Dropout on the track “Never Let Me Down,” which also
featured Jay-Z. Ivy later went on to make guest appearances
on “HBO Boxing,” ABC’s “Monday Night Football” and the
FedEx Orange Bowl.
Ivy’s currently gearing up for the release of his debut album
Here I Am, which arrived in stores Oct. 26. The 18-track
project tackles topics of life, love, war and spirituality with a

Whether Perry’s infamously unflappable fan base will be as

NCAA, Pros Team Up to Stop Improper Benefits Violations

Just a week following the NFL’s announcement of its plans
to enforce tougher penalties on illegal hits, the NCAA’s college
ranks have also reported its own intentions of beefing up the
punishment for player misconduct.
The NCAA recently released a news statement of its
current talks with professional leagues and player management
agencies with an eye to creating “potential post-NCAA
penalties” for student athletes who violate the improper benefits
guidelines.
According to an Associated Press report, a panel of more
than 20 college and pro officials are considering new guidelines
that would cause any student athlete who loses their college
eligibility for taking improper benefits from player management
agents to be subject to financial fines upon entering any
professional league such as the NFL, NBA or MLB.
And if that’s not enough, officials are also discussing
possibly suspending improper benefit violators for as many as
six to eight games during their rookie season in the pros.
AP reports the panel of officials met last week and is making
strides in agreement upon possible solutions to the improper
benefits violations that has plagued college sports in recent
years.

as Dallas Cowboys’ Dez Bryant (88) could be fined or
suspended upon entering the NFL.
NFL stars Reggie Bush and Dez Bryant are perhaps the
most high-profiled players who were recently charged with
such student athlete misconduct. Bush recently gave back his
2005 awarded Heisman Trophy for taking improper benefits
during his tenure at USC, while Bryant was suspended for most
of his senior season in ’09 after the NCAA learned of his illegal
interaction with former NFL star Deion Sanders. Other lesser
known student athletes have also taken improper benefits,
including six North Carolina Tar Heels football players, who
were all stripped of their playing eligibility this season.
But college administrators have had enough. That’s why
they’re teaming up with pro officials like AFCA executive
director Grant Teaff and NFL team presidents Bill Polian to fix
the problem fast.
“Our intent is not to eliminate NCAA oversight of agent
issues, but rather modify the NCAA’s philosophical basis for
these rules from enforcement to an assistance-based model,”
said Mike Slive, president of the Southeastern Conference of
the NCAA. “Dealing with improper agent conduct has been a
challenge for a long time, not only for intercollegiate athletics,
but also for the many agents who try to follow the rules.”
Even high profiled sports agents like Jimmy Sexton are in
on the talks.
“Maybe for the first time,” Teaff stated, “we can have
everybody singing out of the same hymn book.”

Arenas Could Miss Wizards’ Season Opener

The Washington Wizards will soon open its 2010-’11 season
with new franchise star John Wall, but it appears as if one of
the team’s old top dogs is still up to his old tricks.
Veteran Wizards star Gilbert Arenas has missed playing
time in each of his last three seasons, and could soon make it
a fourth straight year. The Wizards have reported that Arenas,
who is trying to bounce back from a 50-game suspension after
a felony gun conviction last season, is suffering from a sore
right ankle and could miss Washington’s season opener.
The 28-year-old former all-star was sidelined during the
most recent team practices. Wizards head coach Flip Saunders
told reporters that Arenas’ ankle has fluid buildup and the team
is waiting “to see how it is” before they clear him to play.
Arenas sprained the same ankle in training camp during
the summer, but it didn’t appear serious at the time. But he
later missed two preseason games after suffering a strained
right groin. He was also fined and took heat for sitting out
one preseason game by faking a knee injury, claiming he just
wanted to give his teammate, Nick Young, a chance at more
playing time. Arenas apologized for his actions and hasn’t
spoken with the media since.
Saunders told reporters he’d love to have Gil on the court
for the opening games of the season, but he’s not worried if he
isn’t healthy in time.
“I’m not really [worried]; we’ve prepared, we’ve played a
lot without him,” Saunders said. “So, we’d love to have him.
If we don’t have him, I still think we can go out there and be
effective.”
To be effective without Arenas, the Wizards will have to
rely on new additions such as Wall and veteran guard Kirk
Hinrich. They’ll also have to lean on returning veterans like
