Group 1 Technology Report Proposal

Carpio, Chuaunsu, Laurel, Siasoco, Tolentino, Villanueva

Problem # 1:
Up until today, unemployment and underemployment are still major issues in the Philippines.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the unemployment rate was at 5.6%, while the
underemployment rate was 16.3% last July 2017. Generally speaking, both unemployment and
underemployment are economic and social problems. These are economic problems because they
represent waste of a valuable resource - labor. The economy is not operating efficiently as it is throwing
away goods and services that unemployed and underemployed workers could have produced.
Furthermore, these are also social problems because they cause severe suffering as unemployed and
underemployed workers struggle with reduced incomes. The economic distress spills over to affect
people’s emotions and family lives.

In a sense, this unemployment and underemployment can be attributed to insufficient information

between employers and employees. Companies are unable to hire suitable employees, while those
unemployed and underemployed too find it extremely difficult to find a fitting job for them.

Proposed Solution to Problem #1:

The proposed solution is to adapt a kind of “Tinder” application for corporations and the
workforce. This social networking application will use algorithms that will match users. By plugging in
one’s location, industry, and interests, users can post jobs, seek them out, and network. People looking for
jobs can simply browse through job postings. Hiring managers can also look through candidates’ profiles.
In addition, once there is a match, the person interested in the particular job and the company also
intrigued in the credentials of the applicant would be place in direct contact with one another. Without
doubt, this will make the job hunting process much simpler and easier. The use of this kind of information
technology can bridge the gap between the two parties.

Problem #2:
In this day and age, consumers have a difficult time looking for the products they want and need
at a price and quality they are willing to pay. At times, they have to go to different malls and shops just to
look for one specific item. Indeed, this can be extremely frustrating and time-consuming for buyers. On
the other hand, suppliers and producers still struggle at times with selling products to their target market.

Proposed Solution to Problem #2:

The proposed solution is to adapt an online purchasing application for goods. The information
system will compile and present the different goods (may it be raw materials or food and household
items), brands, quantity, and prices available from various supermarkets, shops and locations. With this,
consumers will be able to decide which one to buy at the price, quality, quantity, and location that fits
them. People can also share recommendations and feedback on the products being sold and the shop’s
quality of service. For the suppliers/producers, they can use the site in order to track consumer trends and
also how to improve the quality, quantity, and price of the goods they sell. In general, this will also make
the market for products more competitive. To an extent, it will mirror the Trivago application wherein one
can compare prices and quality of hotels or the Booky application where one can view the different menus
of restaurants.
