Breathe. Take a deep breath.

Lungs explores the sounds of air making its way through vents, bellows, and tubes. Each
accordion alongside the brass section largely act as three separate forces throughout the work,
contrasting the timbre of air vibrating reeds within the accordions with air resonating through
the horns and tuba. This slow-moving piece navigates through sustained cluster chords that
fade into and out of each other from different areas of the stage, growing and building towards
a climax of sudden clarity with exposed diatonic triads.

performance notes
The conductor, horn and tuba players are to all sync stopwatches at the start of the piece, with
players then following the stopwatch alongside the timecodes written in the parts. The
accordion players are to follow the conductor.
The accordion players are to follow the directions where required, moving from positions as
stated in the parts and score and as shown in the stage plan. If playing from music, place each
page of the accordion part on stands in their respective positions around the stage.
